I dont want to bring too much "paper money with me" but I dont really wnt to charge all my expenses on my credit cards - can anyone tell me my CIBC bank card, can I access money in my canada ccount while in Disney at an ATM - the bank says yes, but they seemed confused at the same time haha

has anyone done this? and have it work?
thanks

I was in WDW in the spring and used my Royal Bank Card to access money at the ATM's with no problems. I have used it in Hawaii, Mexico, Cuba, Austria and never have any problems. We are not able to use our Canadian Bank Debit cards to pay at the register. I have tried it in many places, Walmart in Buffalo, Target in Orlando and their debit system does not recognize our Bank Cards, but I just walk over to the ATM and get the money out there and pay in cash.

Yes, it can be done, but the surcharges are expensive. I have a daily withdrawl limit on my bank card of $500 -- that's Canadian. So when the exchange rate was really high a couple of years ago, I could only take out a couple of hundred each day, and each withdrawl cost me about $3.00 US right off the top, and then when I got home, I had another charge of around $3.00 Cdn for using a non "interac" bank machine.

With my limit, I can probably withdraw close to $400 US per day right now. But adding $5-$10 service charges on top of each transaction can get expensive.

I prefer to take travellers cheques now because they don't expire should I not use all of them (yeah, like THAT's ever happened !). If I was running out of money and didn't want to pay that extra 2.5% the Ccard companies add to their exchange rate right off the top, I would certainly use it to take out $400, but wouldn't want to be doing this more than once in a trip.

I have a $1000 limit so I could take out like $700 to be safe right?

Not like I would need that much every day lol

I just dont want too much cash in my wallet each time

but I dont really like travel checks (not sure why though) just dont want to have to carry around my ID etc

Exactly.

Most ATM's belong to the popular networks being Interac & Plus, and some others, note the symbols on your CIBC machine at home these are the symbols you will look for on foreign machines. I have never encountered a machine that did not belong to at least one of the networks my Bank did.
Using a machine in a foreign country is just like at home you put your card in and put in your password. (my husband's password is a name and some foreign machines do not have letters as well as numbers on the keys so he has to remember which letters correspond to which numbers) Then you select the amount of money you want in the currency of the country you are in eg how many US dollars. The exchange is done when the transaction is put through to your bank. There are service charges each machine and bank treat them differently but I still find it much easier than getting travellers cheques before the trip.

I have used my bank card at ATM's in the US, Mexico, England, Italy, Switzerland and Ireland. It's no different - Look for the Cirrus and/or Interac symbol on the machine.

I never had a problem anywhere I used my card on Disney property. I do think that I had to key it in as a chequing account rather than a savings account like I do here, for some reason.

We have never had a problem using our bank card either. There is just the usual service charges applied so we try not to take out little amounts at one time.

I believe Interac is a completely Canadian network -- you won't likely see that familiar"finger & keypad" symbol at WDW. The networks to look for are Cirrus (symbol looks like the MasterCard logo) and Plus (part of the VISA network, I believe.)

President's Choice Financial does not recommend their customers use their bankcards outside of Canada as they are not technically part of either Cirrus or Plus networks, however I have successfully used my PC Financial bank card in the United States (Bank of America works perfectly), Great Britain (HSBC works there) and Germany.

I have used my debit card in Florida at many places. WDW will do it and the Nike Outlets will allow it and many other shops will do it.

How long have they been set up on the interac/debit system??
Last time I was down they weren't..I was told they never would have system for paying interac for purchases like we do as the logistics of getting it set up would be a nightmare. They have something like a visa debit card but it is apparently different than what we have here where funds come straight from your bank acct.
I never ever carry cash at home--everything is paid for by interac! Done paid for..no credit card bills! lol!
So I wonder then if they now have interac that I could use it with my US account linked to my debit card??

It was just at the end of May we used Debit at the outlet stores at BELZ and the one at the Florida Premium outlet mall. We used it at the Nike outlet at 3 different locations also and at DTD. Now TD has a system setup with over 2000 US vendors for interac purchases so I am not to sure if it is with all bank cards or not but I would imagine so.

You may want to put money on your visa / mc whatever you have so you have a credit. Then just use your credit card for purchases--you'll likely get a better exchange rate than the US banks would provide you with and also no service charge. We do this all the time and just make sure we only spend what we have put on the card as a credit (works best if you don't carry a balance on your card).

We only had afew problems for some reason at WDW this passed July when we were there.MGM my CIBC card didnt work,AK no problem,MK in some machines it was fine ,in others no go.Thank god for the travlers checks.Plus the service charges arent worth it. :flower:

hmm that is weird
My bank (CIBC said) it will only work if the account is a checking account, is that everyones experience? Mine is checking . . .

Interesting we used our TD debit card a few times at WDW when we had to because we hadn't brought enough TT's read miscomunications between DW and myself LOL. We didn't have any problem and not a single service charge only if we were to use a bank machine which we never do while there anyhow.
