anyone else do the hide the Christmas pickle? Kid needs to find where DH hid the pickle and then gets a small present?

I thought RR played hide the summer sausage?

I grew up doing the Christmas Pickle! I still do it with my husband on our tree and then with my parents on theirs. :bounce:

My mom would hide it on Christmas Eve and now my husband, Dad and I fight to be the first to find it. She has a specific "Pickle Present" that is appropriate for anyone, and whoever finds it gets to open it on Christmas Eve.

When I was a kid, (and an only child so it wasn't much of a competition ha ha ha :p ) she used to let me pick any one present... however, I picked the big present and then Christmas morning was kind of different because I had already opened my special gift. So that's why she started having an actual "Pickle Present."

Hope that helps! I love traditions like that... I believe it's German?

Hee hee hee... darn dial up connection just got me too far behind in the conversation. :teeth:

But I do encourage you ALL to do the Christmas Pickle! It's great fun!!!!!!!!! :jester:

LOL!! :teeth:

We are doing it this year. My Ya Ya sister, Pam, (thanks again, Pam! :) ) sent a pickle ornament to me so I can start this tradition w/ my boys. :D

Ok, this sounds like a fun tradition, but are we honestly talking about a real pickle or an ornament? What is the "special pickle gift"? What's the whole story behind all the pickle business??? Inquiring minds need to know.!

A pickle ORNAMENT. :teeth: :teeth: :teeth:

In Old World Germany, the last decoration placed on the Christmas tree was always a pickle…carefully hidden deep in the boughs. Legend has it that the observant child who found it on Christmas Day was blessed with a year of good fortune...and a special gift.

This is actually the one DH and I have... but I grew up with a glass pickle. :)

Last time I was at the Germany store in Epcot, they had a whole xmas tree ful of pickle ornaments.

Herc.

Yep, we do it too. Thanks for reminding me that I need to wrap my pickle gift!! :D

I've never heard of this and both of my DH's parents are German born and raised. I'll have to ask DH and his mother about it-- maybe they just never mentioned it.

We do the pickle ornament too, but at DS's age (6), we always let him find it.

We hide the pickle at our house, too. ;)

Ours is glass and whoever found it last year gets to hide it this year.
