I've raised this elsewhere but wanted more to see the question.

Does anyone have a guess or inside information on why they would have changed from 1 parade listed at 4:5 on the 16th to 2 parades, one at 10:30 and one at 1:15 that day?

It seems really odd.

I was really counting on this being at least one day of low crowds during our visit. Now something seems up.

If they do parade taping, do they list regular parades that day?

Does anybody have a guess?

This posted time seems odd for it to be a parade taping day, but that's the only thing I can think of that might change up the schedule like that.

Did you try to call and book a holiday tour for that day? Since the tour is still at 2pm, asking how they'll do the seating for the parade that early?

I have that on my list to do when I have a minute today. I'm guessing they just missed updating that tidbit, or maybe that one day they will start with the parade instead of end with it.

I'm still betting parade taping just because that seems so "off" and because I haven't come up with any other theories. I do think it's odd though that they didn't extend park hours any that day if there's something unique going on.

I'd love to hear from others on how DL parade taping has worked in the past. I've seen lots of stories about how it goes in the MK, but not at DL.

All the blogs I've read about parade taping have NOT listed the dates for DL. So this might be a theory. It does seem strange that it starts so early - one hour after park opening. I'm with the OP. I was looking forward to this day being the least crowded. If they tape the parade, it'll be nuts. And then Friday's return of PtN, another day of heavy crowds.

But if they do tape the parades, you can bet on us trying to get on camera!

OK, I called to ask the tour people if I booked the parade on the 16th, what parade would I see. She seemed as perplexed about those parade times as I was and escalated the question. No answer though. She said to watch the site to see if times are updated or I can call back later for an answer.

She also said the tour is sold out that day, so they definitely need to figure it out.

Tell me about this parade. My son's birthday is this day and we were going to drive up in the morning to celebrate his birthday for the day. The 16th has always been pretty low key at Disneyland. Has this changed?

As it stands right now, it's just the regular Christmas parade. No idea if the odd times mean it will end up being something different.

The parades have a lot of logistic issues.

One main one is that the Parade Storage area off Main Street needs to be clear in the early AM hours, as it used to help stock the park with Food and Merchandise, and other vehicles needed to prepare the park.

So Disney has a couple of options, the easiest is to offer 2 parades, with the first starting at "iasw" and then gets stored off Main Street, and then returns to be placed in the Parade barns that have a roof and support to work on the floats and costuming for the performers.

One option is to run the parade before Early Entry, in which only the floats get moved to Main Street without music and performers. The other option is to have one parade, and then leave it at the Main Street storage until after park closing, and then the same float only parade happens after the last guest has left the park.

And the Christmas Season, it is more important when they opt to run two different parades, so you need the Christmas floats backstage behind "iasw" before starting Paint the Night. The worse nights are during Candlelight Processional, where you have the logistics of seating for the show that has to be removed off the parade route, and New Years Eve, where timing and guests trying to get a good seat for the fireworks come into play.

That's interesting and I'm glad you posted it. But how do you think that might translate into earlier parade times on the 16th?

Maybe they have to run it twice to have it back at Small World by the end of the day. And for some reason they need that Main Street storage area earlier than they could accomplish having the second parade later than 1:15? It reverts to regular times the next day, so is something going on Wednesday night?

I presume that Candlelight Processional weekend will have the "funky" parade route, in which some floats are removed, and the parade route is from "iasw" to the Central Hub, where all the floats are placed on the road circling the Partners Statue, and then they return to "iasw", since Main Street is blocked off with the viewing areas for the Candlelight shows. It isn't perfect, but was the best idea that Disney could come up with to deal with the issue.

As for what is happening on that speicifc date, it could be as simple as a special after hour party for a park sponsor that is not announced to the public.

You have logistic issues during Grad Nights, and why Disney has made many modifications over the years to try and keep the park as many hours as possible, but still stock everything. It was a lesson learned in the early years of Disneyland, and why Disney World was designed with more backstage areas and routes, including the Utilidors.

As someone who was allowed to attend special 3rd shift events for special guests, it is amazing to see what happens from park closing to opening. It is a big dance, and more than once has required the park to delay gates opening, especially on rope drop days. One requirement of these events is an escort at all times to make sure safety protocol is followed, as you just can't walk down the street, when the truck with airline baggage carts come travelling down the street. (It is a great system where they can sort items per location, similar to loading a specific airplane with the right luggage, backstage and then have a quick delivery in the early AM).

Now the Star Wars Land logistics are fairly easy, since there is easy backstage access. Things like work on the on-stage Rivers of America area, or Critter Country work might require the current operating sidewalks to be used to move equipment after hours could cause a change in the evening activities.

These things are usually designed for slower days to lessen the impact.

Wow... you know so much !!
So this means it is not "full" parade on candlelight Processional weekend with some floats off?
Better off skipping the parade for another day.

Based on prior years, the "Christmas Parade" is better on other days, and is offered daily (unless it rains). There will be only one Paint the Night on Saturday night at 10:45 PM (and none on Sunday), that should be the full parade, and more than likely will go from "iasw" to Main Street, and then return after hours to the Parade Barns. But of vcourse, everything at Disney is always subject to change, so no promises.

And yes, I have been fortunate enough to work in association with the Theme/Amusement Park business in at least a part time position for decades, even though I have never worked officiallly for any of the major Companies. I have been a reporter, and currently working behind the scenes for TV/Media companies that produce programming for TV, Radio and print. So lots of inside info, some I can share, especially past history... Also work with some third party providers of attractions for the parks as a researcher. (not designer, you wouldn't want to ride something I designed!!!)

Would that apply to Paint the Night as well? Or will the processional be out of the way before that goes through?

No, the plan, as I understand it (and subject to change), is to clear the parade route itself, such as removing the viewing chairs. Now, the curb area will more than likely be off limits for the first segment from the Opera House to the Emporium, or at least restricted), but the rest of the parade route should be the same, along with all the floats being offered.

The issue with the Christmas Parade, the last float has to get out of the "driveway" between the Castle and Tinker Bell's Pixie Hollow, so the first float can head back towards "iasw", so there is limited space in the "circle" and why floats have to be removed that Saturday and Sunday.

Any taping at Disneyland will be done BEFORE the official start, since they can't put the tree up until the taping is done. If I remember right, last year they didn't tape any parade scenes and used previous years. They only taped performances.

I've been hearing on the WDW side of things that it's being flipped this year with scenes from WDW and actual parade footage at DL. That's why I'm still wondering when that's happening and if the funky schedule on 11/16 has anything to do with that.

My understanding from another thread is that the dance teams are there November 5th & 6th for taping. So the Parade is likely then too. As it can't be done after that because the tree will be up by the following weekend for the kickoff of the Holiday season.

My guess is that the schedule on the site is an error. Wouldn't be the first time.

Thanks for that report! That's the first I've heard any dates suggested and does make me feel better! :)

I didn't consider the tree angle, because at WDW they just don't put the tree up until after the parade taping. They start their holiday season without the tree up in the MK.

Prior years filming at Disneyland for the Disney Parks Christmas special have been done without the tree, they just shoot down Main Street south, and use the tree location if the cameras to be placed. Since the park is already being decorated for Christmas starting the 1st of November, placing some overhead decorations on the street is easy, and then they can just use temporary props like small white trees to decorate the small area needed (Basically the Emporium to the Castle is what is used, with the parade route starting at the Photo Shop, using the CM gate next to First Aid)

As for filming, they try to keep it down to just a few days, but with multiple venues and stages available, and having to work with the Performer's schedule (Such as the featured singers), they can just set up something like a stage in front of the castle for part of a day.
