(Christmas) Lights, Decorations, Action…..A Post-Christmas PTR (update 12/22-page 42)

sweet on the new trip plans, and hopefully glenn learned something from you.

we all know he needs some advice every now and then.

:lmao:

I don't think the DIS allows enough posts in any given thread to give Glenn all the advice he needs..........

It would take a number of sequential threads, like another Liesa PTR!!! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Okay you two!

I always thought that the "DIS" in Disboards stood for Disney. Now that I'm getting dissed I think it may mean something else!

So Marvin, you think if I talk nice to member services they'll let us put 5 in a 1-bedroom at any resort? (We all know James doesn't mind sleeping in a sleeping bag! Not that we give him any choice. :rotfl:)

For the period we are staying next summer, a 1
BR at OKW will actually be ONE point less for the entire stay than the 1BR at Kidani. I thought that was an interesting difference over a 9 night stay!!! :confused3

You were comparing the same time period, right? I mean, it wasn't comparing your December Kidani stay vs. a summer OKW stay? I would hope that the points-cost would be similar, but I know that they're vastly different at some resorts. AKV is one of the best values out there.

:rotfl:

Marvin, having something booked is always a good thing! And I see why people always say to buy DVC where you want to stay the most because of the 11-months booking window. :thumbsup2

I hope your DS will be able to have that last family vacation before he will join the Navy. Will he not be entitled to get some leave during his 5 years? Or is it just that you won't be able to plan when he would be able to go on vacation? I can understand that he would not be able to leave for vacation just after two months of service, but some free time during those 5 years would seem reasonable to me...

Okay, a couple of clarifications on your statement. First of all, I didn't talk nice or even ask about putting 5 in a 1BR at OKW. We were just getting started with our DVC membership and had a lot of incentive developer points to use the first year. We started planning possible trips to use them up. We were inside the 7-month window and I called about AKL (Kidani was just being built) so we could sleep 5 and it was not available for our whole trip. MS mentioned OKW and SSR did have availability for the whole time we wanted. I told her that we had 5 in our party and she offered that we could put 5 in a 1BR at OKW but there was only bedding for 4. I can't remember if she said the same thing for SSR, or we just never got around to discussing it. We liked the idea of staying at OKW, so we took that option.

Secondly, I don't know about at ANY resort. I have seen a lot of discussion back and forth about this topic in the DVC threads and it seems like you can't do 5 at all of the resorts. Space is definitely a limiting condition, and probably comes into play at a few of them, but the size of the rooms at OKW seems to be some of the largest of the DVC resorts, and space is definitely not a problem there for sure. I don't know if the fact we now have Kidani AND BLT available to sleep 5 in a 1BR affects their willingness to let you sleep 5 at any other resorts or not.

Drew did prefer putting the sleeping bag on top of the cushions instead of directly on the floor, but it worked fine for him. There was still a HUGE amount of floor space left over even with him using up part of the area.

I know you will find this hard to believe being as how I am so laid-back and non-OCD in the planning area,;) but I actually have a spreadsheet that shows different room-types and different DVC resorts for the dates of our trip, by day of the week. It allowed me to see the best options, and which ones would and wouldn't be possible with the number of points we had available (unless we shortened the stay a day or two).

I agree that AKV is one of the best deals out there, and mainly because of the thinking that a family of 5 can stay in a 1BR instead of having to get a 2BR at some other resorts. The points change during our stay but the first few days OKW is 2 pts/day higher on weekends, but 1 pt/day lower for a 1BR over AKV during the weekdays, at least for standard view villas. The transition over to the higher season, and when it occurs, just happens to fall so there is a net 1 point difference less at OKW during our stay next June.

One other thing to keep in mind. Since AKV is home resort for both of us, we can book at 11 months, but those other resorts we can't book until the 7 month window. Since some of the others are more popular, they are a lot more difficult to get at 7 months. SSR and OKW are larger and typically have more availability even at 7 months, which is probably what made them options on our previous trip. Hoping to get 5 in a 1BR at VWL, BCV or BWV, even if they allowed it would probably be much more difficult to pull off. Still, a stay at OKW as a change of pace is a pretty good option IMO. Now that there is a charge for valet parking, it helps that Kidani, OKW, and SSR allow you to park very near your room (or an elevator to take you there).

So true about getting something booked so you at least have something. I knew I could possibly change it later on if needed. I wish I had been a little quicker when my 11-month window opened, but I had to bank my remaining points for this year to have enough to make the ressie, and for some reason that took longer than I hoped. I had some problem online doing it, but not sure what it was so it took a few extra days to show up.

Home resort is important. The thing is, we really like AKV and could stay there every time. There is so much to do to keep you busy, and the rooms are really great. When we bought in, we anticipated how our touring would change with time. We could be happy just being there relaxing, getting a Savanna view room and spending a lot of time on our balcony viewing the animals. Where some people don't like how "remote" AKV seems to be, it is one of the things that appeals to us so we feel like we have entered another world all together, escaping the hustle and bustle.

I'm sure he will be able to get leave every now and then during his tour. I don't know if we can know far enough ahead of time to book a trip. Then again, we might be able to book it at a time we think would work for him, and let him know when it is so he can request it. I just don't know now. Regardless, I'm sure it will be/feel "different."

He said that if the Navy doesn't expect him to report immediately, he probably would have to stay at his school and "work" with his ROTC group until he reports. He thinks that it might be possible in that case to get leave and go with us, but he isn't sure one way or the other this far out. He really won't know what his orders are until right before he graduates probably.

Because of his 4 years of ROTC he will go into the Navy as an officer. Who knows what advantages (or possibly disadvantages) that may create towards what he will be able to do when it comes to leave.

Here you go Glenn. You know we're only kiddin' ya! (BTW, that's a hug from Dan. ;) )

I believe it. You should have seen the way he was looking at me during "YMCA". :rotfl2:

Okay, I get it -- play dumb...it'd be a stretch, but maybe I could pull it off.

I knew that OKW had the biggest square footage, but hadn't heard of them allowing a little leniency occupancy-wise. Makes sense that they may allow it at OKW, but not other resorts.

Drew did prefer putting the sleeping bag on top of the cushions instead of directly on the floor, but it worked fine for him. There was still a HUGE amount of floor space left over even with him using up part of the area.

Yep, I have a spreadsheet too, where the points charts are tables that get "looked-up" to fill in the point requirements. As of now I only have it set up for AKV and BLT though.

I agree that AKV is one of the best deals out there, and mainly because of the thinking that a family of 5 can stay in a 1BR instead of having to get a 2BR at some other resorts. Interesting, that they're that close.

I don't even know when we may want to try a different resort, but maybe someday.

actually i was wondering which original village person taught you how to do the YMCA so well, must have been a bunch of lessons, you were pretty good up there.

Some good news for you! There is a thread on the DVC threads about the refurbishment going on at OKW right now. They are adding the additional sleeper chair to the rooms as part of the refurb, so in the future you don't have to rely on playing dumb OR leniency. They will officially sleep 5 in a 1BR.

I'm trying to find out if other DVC resorts are going to get the sleeper chair also.

He'll probably say he thought it was Candi! ;)

Hopefully this is what you were referring to. That is good news! We'll have to try OKW out someday. Hopefully the other resorts add the sleeper chair also. Thanks for the info. -- I hadn't seen that yet.

Hmm, I wonder if she likes construction workers? JK Dan.

Probably.... she doesn't appear to have really high standards! (rimshot) JK Dan.

Hey, you're doing much better here than your guesses over on Liesa's thread!!! :lmao:
well you should see my latest guess there, i think i covered everything.

and if we keep thisup here, we might have a whole page of guy talk without any lady talk, that would have to be some kind of record.
