I purchased the Disney Princess Castle 2 years ago for my twin nieces per suggestions on the DIS. They just love in and it is still being enjoyed today. So DIS members how can I WOW them this year!!
How about giving them a bond. It will mature by the time they will go to college. At three they won't even know what they are getting and i'm sure if they are like regular kids they have way too many toys.
My twins will be 2.5 at Christmas and right now I've got them each Kindle Fires and am getting them started with Calico Critters.
I'm having a hard time with them this year because they have SO much themselves, plus even more hand-me-downs from my oldest DD. I'm pretty convinced they have every toy known to man.

How about Playmobil sets? There are a few geared toward that age group and there are sets that are more advanced/detailed for older kids as well.
Maybe a huge wooden doll house with starter furniture?
I agree that a wood play kitchen & wood or fabric food would be well received. One of my nieces will be 17 months old at Christmas and I'm planning to make felt or fleece food for her gift (or for her second birthday in July) as long as I'm skilled enough, lol. I want her to have it early enough so she can get several years of use out of it since most kids outgrow the play kitchen phase by age 4.
My 3 year old likes the disney magiclip dolls. Their dresses clip on and off and the have houses now too. She also loves princess dresses. You could buy each of them a different dress.
One of these! I got my twins (boy/girl) a play kitchen when they turned three and they LOVED that thing. And baby doll sets with stroller, playpens, high chairs etc. are perfect for that age.
