Can an individual who lives at the bottom of the ocean be an American?MouseWorshipin said:OK, Spongebob is a square American.![]()
My heritage is American, and I'm proud of it. I want no qualifications.eclectics said:I don't know if I would go that far. I don't think there's anything wrong with identifying with your ancestral heritage. It doesn't really do any harm and I also think kids should know about their roots.
Yes. The Mexicans laugh at us a bit, I know. What are we gonna do? Start calling ourselves "United States of America People?"Planogirl said:Can an individual who lives at the bottom of the ocean be an American?![]()
Actually, the term American is improper too from what I understand. The word really applies to everyone from the Americas doesn't it?
That is a problem. I wonder why the early founding fathers never came up with an actual name? Sure we have states and sure they're united and of course, we're a part of the Americas. So why did a description become our name?MouseWorshipin said:Yes. The Mexicans laugh at us a bit, I know. What are we gonna do? Start calling ourselves "United States of America People?"

I second! And I nominate Squidward for Governor!eclectics said:I vote Bikini Bottom for the 51st State!![]()

Mexico is United, too. They are the United States of Mexico. So, we can't call ourselves "United Statesians," either.Planogirl said:That is a problem. You wanna call yourself something else, great, have at it. Just don't go pinning it on me.
I'm not doing "nothing" with my roots. My roots happen to BE American!eclectics said:No biggie, at least for me. I'm an American first and always will be, but I'm only second generation and I happen to identify quite a bit with my families roots. It doesn't bother me in the least if some want nothing to do with theirs.
MouseWorshipin said:I'm not doing "nothing" with my roots. My roots happen to BE American!
Exactly how many generations of a family have to live in this country before you are full-fledged American, without some kind of tag on it?

MouseWorshipin said:Oh, my gosh, I'm sorry. That came off wrong. Don't read it with Debate Tone. Read it with Beaten-Down, For Pete's Sake, tone.
My people have been here a loooong time. I'm an American, and that's all there is to it for me.
Sorry.![]()
I still say it's an interesting topic for another day and another thread. Btw, I wonder if Mr. Krabs could be trusted as State Treasurer? But they came to Jamaica from Africa, they were not indigenous to the Caribbean. It is obviously wrong to call them African Americans because they are Jamaican but their origins are not in doubt.MouseWorshipin said:The Jamaicans are from Jamaica. The ones I know think we are stupid or rude to say they are from Africa.
One of the girls in my son's class was doing a report on Africa and said that most of the people who live in Africa are African-Americans!
And the Chinese and Japanese don't much like being lumped in together as Asian. They think we're just kind of dumb, and don't take offense. But they aren't crazy about it.
Is Spongebob really American though???MouseWorshipin said:No, they really don't. It's more PC crap gone berserk.
In my book, we're ALL Americans squared. As opposed to square Americans. OK, Spongebob is a square American.![]()

Well, if she was talking about Liberia that makes sense.
Because most folks from the rest of the Americas identify themselves as being "Mexican", "Costa Rican", "Canadian" etc. They are from the continent of North or South America, but their country also has a name.Planogirl said:That is a problem. WIcruizer said:You're entitled to your opinion, and if you feel you need it that's fine. That doesn't mean I can't believe it's ridiculous to 1) Identify myself exclusively through my sexual preference or 2) Have a week to celebrate whom I like having sex with. So it has nothing to do with whether I need it or not. AS I said earlier, gay people I work with and/or know socially think gay pride week is a joke as well. They HATE being identified as gay, because they want to be defined as a person not by their sexual orientation.
toto2 said:I let this one pass , I dont know why , so I answer it now: homosexual people started to use the word gay exactly because they wanted to take it away from the sex part. Obviously , we are not only defined by who we sleep with ! And I hope that people dont define me by my sex life. But being gay is more than just your sex life: when you are gay , you fall in love with somebody who is the same sex as you are , when you are gay , you are part of a minority that in some countries you can get killed ( two gay teenagers were killed in Iran last year). It is really my hope that some day , being gay is a non-issue , but it is not. Just the fact that we are having this discussion is proof. I will had that , in my experience , most gay people who think that Gay pride is stupid are the one who can pass as straight because they are not effeminate in anyway. The dont feel the discrimination that those who cant pass as straight. And as long as those invisible gays stay invisible , all the strereotypes will continue to exist. Why was Brokeback so scandalous for some ? Because it broke this stereotype. It was there for evryone to see : two gays who dont know Barbara streisand , who dont have that feminine voice who are not hairdresser !
