How old are your kids? We have preschoolers and have fluccuated on the amount. We tried chore charts where each chore completed was worth a dime (yeah we're cheap, but they are young). But the chore chart wasn't helping with their behavior and the money wasn't automatic. Bieng 2 and 4 and having to wait a week was too long.
Instead we implimented "Good Behavior Money" where they get 3 chances a day to earn $1 (funny money...but redeemable for real $). The day is broken down into morning, afternoon, and evening. If they do their chores and show good behavior choices then they earn their $1 for that part of the day. If they don't make good choices they don't earn it. At the end of the day we go the their money bags (zippable pencil pouches) and add the money that they earned. We also discuss why they didn't earn money. If they go above and beyond that day they earn a bonus.
Our girls are learning about earning money, saving money, and purchasing power. Plus they are working on counting money by 1s, 5s, and 10s as their money adds up. While we have postponed our WDW trip, some of their earned money was to be exchanged for Disney money to spend on the trip.
