ok, another cooking question and please don't laugh at me if this is stupid (well you can laugh a little).

I have 4 huge chocolate easter bunnies left over from easter sitting in the fridge. Grandparents always need to buy kids Munson bunnies even if they don't eat them. I was about to toss them today when I got the idea of making the strawberries. So my question in two parts - 1) i would assume the chocolate is still good because I've seen stores put out things months before the holidays so a fresh one from the chocolate store must have some shelf life 2) do you think I could melt them done to cover the strawberries? Has anyone ever used their bunnies in a cooking way?

I'm pretty sure it would work. Do you have a double boiler? That's the best way to melt chocolate. Good luck!

They should be good, and yeah you can melt them down , usae a double boiler, or if you dont have one, you can use a glass mixing bowl placed over the top of aregular boiler, add a small amount of milk to the bowl to help smooth out the melted chocolate. you will have to keep the chocolat hot , other wise it'll harden and become one huge chocolate chunk, try grating it in a food processor to speed the melting.

I have absolutely nothing constructive to add but...

There is a Godiva about 2 stores down from where I work and when they are closing they share their extra choco covered strawberries with us. Mmmmm so good.

Has anyone ever used their bunnies in a cooking way?

I believe this was done in "Fatal Attraction".

sorry, couldn't resist.

I would think the chocolate is fine. I still have some from Easter and nibble on it now and then and it's ok.
Very creative  I would never thought of melting the chocolate for strawberries maybe even pretzels. Sounds like it would work fine. Here's a recipe from allrecipes.com
16 ounces milk chocolate chips
2 tablespoons shortening
1 pound fresh strawberries with leaves

1 Insert toothpicks into the tops of the strawberries.
2 In a double boiler, melt the chocolate and shortening, stirring occasionally until smooth. Holding them by the toothpicks, dip the strawberries into the chocolate mixture.
3 Turn the strawberries upside down and insert the toothpick into styrofoam for the chocolate to cool.

Makes 24 servings

In my own defense, I do have a rabbit (a real one!) that I love very much (her name is Cadbury.. how funny is that!) but as soon as I read your original post, that is all I could think of!
Enjoy your strawberries!

(Still giggling!)

I've got tears in my eyes from LOL...
Otto's Doll.....thanks for the good laugh before I go to bed! :)

Oh, I almost forgot to reply to the OP...
You should be okay melting it with a double broiler like everyone else has mentioned.

I believe this was done in "Fatal Attraction". -Oh my! ::eek:

We just melt the chocolate and dip the berries in them. I make individual custard cups for each of us and zap the chocolate in the microwave for about one minute till it is soft. Ymmmmmm......

but since chocolate is tempered and usually kept at a certain degree the only thing that will be different is that when they cool they may have a white film on them. Sort of like when you buy a chocolate bar that has been in the store a bit. That white or light film here and there on the chocolate is because it got to a certain temperature and then hardened again. There is NOTHING wrong with this chocolate but it doesn't quite look as pretty.

When I make chocolate covered strawberries I use chocolate used especially for this or white chocolate that is really candy coating as it does not have any cocoa butter. Chocolate chips can be used and the microwave is great to melt these.

Chop the chocolate put in a bowl, microwave on high for a minute, stir then additional 30 seconds at a time until it is melted.

Dip, chill and enjoy!

I've taken a square of Baker's Semi-sweet chocolate and melted it (at low temp) in the microwave. Then I just dipped the strawberries into it. Very Yummy! I didn't temper it or add anything to it. Of course, I wasn't making a whole bunch or saving them for later. It was just for a little snack.

Uh-oh! Pregnant lady craving chocolate covered strawberries now!!!!! That's not good.
