China’s richest man just picked a fight with Disneyland

Not a lot different than Six Flags in the U.S., and they don't seem to have made much of a dent in Disney Parks.

Anyways, Wanda's already thumbed their nose at Disney (although they officially blame a tenant store), and Disney's preparing the launch codes...

Yes, the IP battle will be very interesting especially across an international battleground. Were Wanda a US company - no contest; in China, who knows? Maybe Wanda is just poking the giant to see how far they can go.

Sure is fun to watch Billionaires engage in slap fights.

Umm, I don't see anything new in that story. It basically repeats the same thing stated in the first post here.

Well, they are adding that Disney characters were seen in their park this past weekend. I did post an article yesterday about that though. :)

One thing that seems to be escaping most here is that most of the Chinese "middle class" want American goods. Owning American products is a sign of affluence. They don't want knockoffs. They want real American products. You can't get much more American than Disney as brands go. Also, everyone will want to be seen at the park. That's why I think that the park will do well. IMO

This. Entering China was a bad move, and I really don't see it accomplishing what they hoped it would. Even if China did build a knock-off park on their soil, I really don't see it having that big of an impact on Disney. Would they lose their Asian market? Sure. But I really doubt that that is that big of a slice in the pie. Certainly not worth the $5+ billion they had to invest, plus all future costs associated with it etc... I fully admit, I see Shanghai crashing and burning after the initial excitement wears off. Which is unfortunate for all of us.

Mr, Wang has plans to build 15 parks thru out China.

Good for him. Competition is good for consumers, and if he can create a good product while paying his workers better than Disney I'm all for it. Although I get the feeling that his parks will feel more like a like six flags than Disney and have obvious fake fronts, creepy smiles and leave the consumers wondering what they really were expecting. Sounds a bit like the ET ride in Universal now that I think of it. :D

I realize that. But, again, China's visitors are hardly Disney's main source of theme park income. Let him build 15 theme parks. Let the Chinese stay there. Would the amount of revenue lost REALLY be worth what it has cost them to build Shanghai, the future losses until that place makes a profit, plus the ongoing costs for maintenance etc?

I'm going to be honest, when I think of a "made in china" theme park, it scares me. The fact that Wanda built the park so much cheaper than Disney makes me worry about the quality and craftsmanship. We've all seen the cheap knock off versions of name brands, and many times you get what you pay for. Disney's reputation for quality will hopefully outshine Wanda's version of things. I'm hoping that cheaply built knockoff doesn't end in a few tragedies.

Wanda is already blatantly knocking off Disney Rides:

Toy Story Mania (1:27) Those are exact knock off ride vehicles and guns
Soarin' (2:30) Exact Knock off

I'm sure many more to come!

Also star tours! ...im a forever Disney girl, but this placedoes look cool tee hee

You can't look at the Shanghai park in isolation like that.

This is a push by the Disney Company as a whole, not just Disney Parks and Resorts, into the Chinese market. Partnership with Chinese Government at a local and national level, building relationships, promoting their movies and merchandise. This is part of a much bigger play.

I am still surprised that Disney has not entered the South American market yet

Yes, that is something to ponder. With all the groups visiting from Brazil and neighboring countries you would think there was a base to support a presence in their country too.

Some may wonder about hurting attendance for the US parks if that happened. I doubt that since a flight from Orlando to Rio is ~12 hours. France is much closer.

Honestly though, most things are made in China. Yes, Even authentic Disney things that we all love to buy .This is not uncommon. The labor it costs to make these are VERY cheap. Often times many items (including offical disney merch) are made in China, shipped to the US, then shipped BACK into china in other to "authenticate" itself.. which lends to the cost. It's odd, but it's how its done. There are also different levels of knock offs that you are talking about. Sometimes they are SO good, it is difficult to tell what is real and what is not real. Others are not and those are the things that fall apart in a day. In my experience, there is very little price point between the two.

It is a common understanding in China. It is very difficult to tell what is real, unless it is coming from a US address.

Wanda is working with the same materials that Disney is. The major difference here though I think, is the amount of money they are paying for labor. Labor in China is very cheap, especially for a Chinese based company. There are not labor laws to my understanding as you have here. Once you get through the red tape of being allowed to build, the building process is usually very quick and efficient. Same with the work force. I am sure that's apart of it too. Disney however, as US company has set standards that they have to follow to pay their work force and ensure their safety (it looks like cast members make them same here as they do in HK?). Wanda doesn't have to do that. Their park looks to be less extensive than Disney with four major rides, none of those being roller coasters. Cuts down on ware and tear from mother nature. I am unsure if they're apart of the IAAPA to help safety regulations, or if they have any kind of standard to be set?

No matter how big Wanda gets, or if they rip of ALL of the Disney characters and have exactly the same things.. There are going to be a large portion of people that will still go to Disney. Why? Because it is "authentic". It's "real". Its what people in the US do. They have things that Wanda will never have. Disney is able to bring a piece of the US to China, without people having to travel from china to get it.

Especially if disney sells "authentic" burgers. .. I lived in southern china for a little awhile. The ONLY place I could get a "real" hamburger (or ham-bob-boa), was a place in Guangzhou. Not even Hong Kong. And we looked. Believe me, we looked. Our co-workers were astounded when they realized this is what a hamburger was.
