Child Molesters Would Face Death Under New Bill

Is this another one of those pre-election votes where nothing will really be done but some incumbants can get their sound bites and one-liners ready for the campaign? They'll attach some crazy proviso to the bill (like getting rid of the EPA) so the other party can't vote for it, then they'll say, "Rep. Summers voted against a bill that would have made penalties tougher for child molesters. Rep. Summers, soft on child molesters."

It's just like all the illegal alien bills, and nothing's been done. What a waste of time.

Why is it a waste of time and money. I know that a tougher stance on child molestation is something that should be done. I know of one who got off after only 2 years in prison and 8 years on probation. He is a threat and always will be. BTW it was for AGGRAVATED child molestion in the 1st degree. A Felony. Yep that's right 2 years and he thinks he's served his time so we should get over it. I say the child serves a life sentence. They don't have a choice and lost their innocence to a stupid adult. 2 years doesn't even begin to cover that. So explain why you think any bill that might help is a waste.

How would this bill have changed that sentence?

They have been talking about the national database for a long time, but that's so easy to do, it should have been done way before now. Why do it right before an election? Sound bites. Everybody thinks child molesters deserve tought sentences, except child molesters.

This guy def. deserves the death penalty!

Toddler Dies; Man Charged With Rape
Police: Additional Charges Possible

I truly felt like I was going to throw up after reading that. Sick. He deserves to die in the worst way possible.

It wouldn't change his sentence but it would change future sentences. They are also discussing longer sentences for molesters. As it stands now you get in more trouble for drugs than for hurting children. I don't see why some on this post act as if this is stupid. If it is discussed maybe it will change. I think like stars say any publicity is better than none. Just my .02 though.

Yes, I am not a death penalty person, but in this case I would make an exception. BTW, our local tv station posted a picture of that beautiful little boy. I just sat here at the computer and cried.

This bill, if passed, is not harsh enough. Good start though.

I doubt this would withstand Constitutional challenges. Back in around the 1970's the Supreme Court issued a ruling that required every state to re-write their death penalty statutes. It said you could no longer have a death penalty for rape.

Partially correct. It was outlawed as punishment for the rape of an adult woman (victim in the case was 16, but the SC considered her an adult). I don't know that there has been anything since that outlaws the death penalty for the rape of a child that isnt' murdered.

I could be totally wrong here, but I thought they shied away from having the death penalty for rapes of anyone that isn't murdered out of fear that the perpetrator will go ahead and kill the victim, since they'll get the death penalty anyway.

I'm not sure, but my understanding is that it applied only to rapes involving adult victims.
