Chic Fil A helping out

Why are you confused?

It's not like we have a group of people that need rent money and we all go in together. It's usually one family at a time, so no excluding going on if they wanted to say no.

My point was, Chic-fil-A has done a lot of wonderful things for people even when they disagree with a lifestyle.
I think helping others is kind.
I also believe that helping someone without needing to disagree with or judge their lifestyle is even kinder.

Sometimes progress is made in small steps.

I'm not defending them in the least. I don't believe in them at all but I can say that I was raised around extreme views of Christianity and saw many not nice things whether straight gay or otherwise.

One of my closest friends in college was not allowed to get engaged or marry her husband until she was examined for specific proofs of things.

Sorry now back to the topic at hand.
that is so awful to hear :( As a Christian, and in my circles, this is not the case. We are all messy, and the point is to be messy together and help each other. If there were no sinners, there would be no Christians.

I know this is meant to be funny, and it is. But, there really are Christian camps like this, and they are not judgy or preachy at all. Instead, they are intended to teach kids to treat sex with respect and not take that decision lightly. In my circles, it is not intended to condemn any kid who makes (or made) a different decision, but to have a place to talk about it openly without fear of judgement.

That's far different than the pray away the gay camps kids are sent to. It's not a nice sit around the fire and talk about self respect kind of place. What they do to those teens is not suited for a family, Disney message board.

While yes the FDA has said gay men are no longer banned from donating blood, the questionnaire used to screen out those not eligible to give blood was not updates until May 27th of this year. Then, the various blood banks have to update their policies and procedures. And then the men who were previously on the indefinite ban list have to have their records updated. So as of the shooting, gay men still have difficulty donating blood. And while the ban was officially lifted in 2015, it was December 21st, 2015 that it was announced. Less than 6 months ago.

There are quite a few reasons why one isn't allowed to give blood. I wanted to donate once, and one question was whether I traveled out of the US within the past year. I was interviewed, asked where (Asia) and then specifically asked if it was outside of major cities. They were worried about malaria transmission by mosquito, and I had traveled outside of major cities where they have mosquito abatement programs. I wasn't allowed to donate blood for a year after I had returned.

that breaks my heart :( I don't know anything about that kind of place. But, I will certainly drop it now, I don't want to get thrown off the board for going all religious!
However, I am finding the original discussion very interesting, and am learning a lot from you folks.

yup. I am on the never donate again list because I lived in England for over 6 months in 1996 (mad cow disease era). It stinks because I have a rare blood type and was a pretty frequent donor.

It is extremely ironic because we are not allowed to give blood in the UK because we spend so much time in the US, West Nile disease being the problem.

Nobody has an issue with him believing what he does. They have an issue with him donating millions of dollars to anti-gay foundations that support "traditional" marriage and pray away the gay camps. That is doing active harm.

I completely agree with the pray away the gay camp, thing is awful and its full of bigotry and hate. Harm comes in many fashions, parents disowning, or using physical violence, turning their backs on your kids them cutting them off financially, throwing them out in the street, trying to shame and ridicule them. When I was in high school, a friend was outed by another person who she thought was her friend. Her parents threw her out of the house, at almost 17 she had know where to go, so she packed what she could in her car and had 150.00 to her name and she could not stay there for her own safety, and So we all got together and took turns having her stay with one of us for the last 3 months of school and the summer leading up to college. So that she could graduate with our class. Our Guidance councilor helped out, helping her get into college, dorm, meal plan and such. This was in the very late 70's.. So sad that there was not any resources for her then. She went to counseling for about 4 or 5 years as a young adult, she said it was necessary for her to work through that point in her life. I will say she that she is now a Vet with her own thriving practice, and she and her partner have been together about 17 years, and have 2 children and are super happy. .. Her parents actually had enough nerve to ask her to reconcile and for a loan/ money....she just said what they said to her long ago... Your not welcome here.. So seeing first hand what this type of action can do to someone... I completely agree.

But from what I understand that Mr. Cathy is willing to listen and make some changes, not in his beliefs but in how donations are spent. When someone is so set in there ways in willing to listen.. then it's progress maybe a small amount of progress but still progress in my opinion.

So maybe it was should be seen as a kind act, and acknowledge as a kind act.. and not see it for more than that, as they never tried to get any press or anything, those employees just were trying to do the right thing. They should be acknowledge for what it is/was some sandwiches not persecuted for just offering some help. Here is a opportunity to open a dialog.

I love the comment about not being able to eat anywhere if full agreement is required first! That is so funny!!!!

It also made me remember how often I don't agree with certain things done by companies that I like a lot. I still go to them unless they really get nasty because I don't expect them to follow my beliefs.

Not interested in stirring any pots.

I was in New York City for the 3 weeks following the 9/11 attacks working with the emergency responders and families, I was in Worchester MA following the death of the 6 fire fighters attempting rescues, I was in Keokuk IA following the deaths of 3 fire fighters and the 3 children they were unable to save (saving 2); I was in Kansas City MO following the death of 6 fire fighters killed by an explosion at a highway construction site fire - the 1 thing every place and every event had in common, people came together. Thank You Chick Fil A, that was a very nice gesture, a true act of kindness.

I can't answer that, Jane. I only know we learned about abstinence and self control when we studied the commandments. I know religious discussion is forbidden and i don't want to be censured. I was just responding to the previous poster pontificating on what is or isn't Christian belief.

Well, thank God gay people can now marry, then.

I don't expect all places to follow my beliefs, either, but I like knowing their stances, because I'd rather give my money to establishments that do.
