Cheney considered provoking Iran

Vice President Dick Cheney had at one point considered asking Israel to launch limited missile strikes at an Iranian nuclear site to provoke a retaliation, Newsweek magazine reported on Sunday.

The news comes amid reports that Israel launched an air strike against Syria this month over a suspected nuclear site.

Citing two unidentified sources, Newsweek said former Cheney Middle East adviser David Wurmser told a small group several months ago that Cheney was considering asking Israel to strike the Iranian nuclear site at Natanz.

A military response by Iran could give Washington an excuse to then launch airstrikes of its own, Newsweek said.

I don't think that there would ever be a need to "make" Israel attack Iran. Israel will never allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons. It is very clear that if Israel is attacked for whatever reason, we will be there to support them. A lot has changed since that discussion took place....if it took place. France has also made it clear that Iran will not be permitted to acquire nukes.

Are you not concerned that Iran has been provoking the US continuously for at least the last year. They support and export terrorism. They supply the men, ammo, equipment and training that kill our soldiers. WE are provoking no one. If happen to be on the receiving end of a military action, it is only what they have been "asking" for for a while now.

It is very clear that if Israel is attacked for whatever reason, we will be there to support them. A lot has changed since that discussion took place....if it took place. You appear to have missed the point somewhat. The report said that Cheney was considering asking Israel to attack Iran. My problem with this, aside from the humanitarian ones, is that Cheney was getting Israel to do the dirty work.

If you want to be cynical about it, one could speculate that by getting Israel to attack, Cheney was making Israel the primary target, not the USA.

Of course they are. They took out the Iraqi nuclear facility on their own during the Carter administration, I believe. They did the world a favor. Why would we bomb Israel in return? They are our allie. Who in their right mind would defend Iran????

I have made it quite clear that I didn't give a fig for the Chirac government of France and what they do. Sarkozy on the other hand, could be another Lafayette! Being part French, one always hope that they will put down that white flag and fight for what is right.
