Thank you for all of the responses. I think I already knew the answer going into this, but needed to be reassured as it has been quite some time since we ATE on property. I will call ahead and see about the placemat and the cake (which seems crazy when you can get a cupcake and the yummy dessert stations!).
The only other restaurant I wanted to visit is the WCC, but it seems that lately it is not what it once was (or at least that is what I am reading ). DH would love the skillet....but I think the hoopla would make him uncomfortable (party pooper) The kids would love it I am sure. Still have to see about ADR's there.
I wouldn't even consider RFC for anything! My husband was at the first one in Mall of America years ago and it was pretty neat at the time, with decent food. That is not the case anymore (IMHO). Cool fish tanks and neat atmosphere--that's it. The food is overpriced and the service usually poor.
Besides, what 5 yr. old wouldn't like to spend their b-day with the mouse??? As a matter of fact, I'm 36 and wouldn't mind b-days so much, if the mouse played a part!!!!
Not sure where you live but we have a RFC about an hour away and we do go there to celebrate our boys birthdays(the volcano cake with the sparkler is there main reason for going) BUT if we were gonna be at Disney for thier b-days I would choose Chef Mickeys after all it is sharing your b-day with the MOUSE
Actually, it seems to be 100 percent. My post listed the reasons we chose it for our son, but as I pointed out, that's because we go to Chef Mickey's already as a traditional first night, so besides the placemat, he's had all that before.
I gave all the info about why we chose Rainforest for our son, so the OP would know exactly what goes on there, as well as at Chef Mickey's which another poster had already supplied.
I do agree that it is the better choice at Disney for a 5 year old, if they only plan one for the trip, or don't go regularly to Chef Mickey's.
I also agree that RFC is loud, however, we always like the food there (in Florida once and in Texas twice) and have always had friendly, prompt service. The service we had on our son's bday last week was better than some of the other disney restaurants we went to that week.
Hmmm....Dh and I were not at all impressed with CM's brunch on Christmas Day. However, the kids enjoyed their very brief visits with the characters. On the other hand, we all enjoyed the food at RFC; but it's not a very magical place for kids. Are you considering any other locations????

I did make an ADR for Chef Mickey's on his actual birthday. I have also made ADR for WCC the day after.....this trip is all about him, so its going to be 2 evenings of rambunctious eating!!!
Thanks for all of the input.....I may check out RFC for a lunch that week!
I would definately try to go over to Rainforest Cafe for a lunch, my 5 year son just loved the whole atmosphere and food( Dino Shaped Chicken Nuggets). You can make reservations for the one just outside AK, to avoid the wait. I found the non-disney phone number on another Disney related Web Site (can't remember which one allears??) We also LOVED Chef Mickey's and I think that is the ideal place for the actual birthday. Have a great time!!
