I like to check in ahead of time for the ability to receive a room ready text. Just keep in mind, you will have to have a card on file and there will be $100 hold put on it, above and beyond what your current balance is, on your check in day.
If you do online check-in there is no need to visit the check-in counter at the resort. Sometime the morning of your arrival you'll receive a text/email that your room isn't ready yet. When your room is ready the room number will be texted/emailed to you too.
I believe the room status/number is also available in the app.

For years you’ve been able to do online checkin WELL in advance of arrival.
The benefit for many over the past few years allowed *thebpossibility* of getting a room ready text (or email or notification within the app) of your room number, rather than having to stop in at the desk.

It’s not an absolute. Until February I had never gotten one. Then for our *second* part of our stay I magically got notice that the room was ready and what room it was. Amazing. First time since we’ve been going, and I tend to do split stays, so that’s a lot of potential room ready texts...

We did online check in last year. Got a text while at Epcot that the room was ready and went straight to room. Never stopped at the front desk the whole trip.
Yes our magic bands and fellow Canadians don’t get shipped
And I want to decline housekeeping
So we will be there

I always do online check in but I do it well before the day before so that I can make room requests.
At this point your room may already be assigned so they may not take your requests into account if you make any.
I love online check in because each time I have done it I've gotten my room number so I can skip the front desk process and walk directly to my room. This is not guaranteed but I have had success each time.
Is there some message when you check-in online that says you have to visit the front desk? Or do you realize it's after check-in time and there was no message and therefore need to stop by the desk?
I do have to say my luck with the room ready messages has increased significantly in the past couple of years.
