cheapest way to send a package to germany?

I need to send a package to germany.

It won't weigh much -- a shirt.

Ive spent a lot of time on the USPS site and can't figure it out. Do any of you send things to a friend in germany?

I just want to know for future reference what the cut off weights are so I know how much I can put in the package. If I'm paying the same rate for an additional pound, I'll stick in some candy.

I send coupons to a family in Japan and the post office gave me a flat rate envelope, it's $4.95 no matter how much it weighs. All I have to do is fill out a customs form.

Are you sending it to an APO ? If so just pick up a flat rate envelope or box and get a customs form at the post office

If you're sending it to a German address it could be international rates which either way still needs a customs form.

That's the price for domestic flat rate. The flat rate envelope price to Japan is $16.95.

OP - a flat rate priority mail envelope to Germany is also $16.95; max weight is 4 pounds.

You could probably fit a shirt in the Flat Rate Priority envelope. That is $16.95. The rate is for anything that fits in the envelope and allows it to seal. If the shirt is small enough, you could add candy or other items.

If it is to an APO address, the same flat rate envelope is only $5.15.

There is a discount for domestic mail if you print your own label. The $4.95 rate mentioned would be for APO FPO addresses, not international rates.

Not quite correct. As already noted, the max international weight is 4 pounds.

I just paid $4.95 for the envelope to Japan, it weighed approx 2.5lbs. I sent a heavy box last month for $11 (not sure of the weight). This was to an APO address, I didn't think about there being a difference, I don't ship anything very often.

Sending to an APO address is completely different then sending directly to another country.

OP here -- no it's not an APO -- so it will be way more expensive.

I just sent three skeins of yarn in the smallest priority box to Luxembourg (tiny country just next door to Germany.)

Had to fill out the customs declaration and the cost was $16.95 (with a four pound limit.)
