Cheapest Last Minute Airfare?

Which sites/airlines have the cheapest last minute airfare and car rental? DH's father passed away unexpectedly on Friday. It's a long story but we still don't know when the funeral/wake/memorial service will be as he passed away out of the country and the body is still in the country where he passed, but I know that when we find out we'll probably only have a day or two to get tickets and get to where they are having the services. Any advice would be appreciated. We have our choice of airports as his hometown is about an hour or two from several midwest cities with airports and we live halfway between two major airports. I have a brother who works for a major airline and I've asked his assistance as he can get me a discount of off rack but usually the airfare from his airline is not the cheapest.

i would first try to 'name your own price' on priceline.com. I found out when my grandfather died that the bereavement fare really wasn't a reduced fare at all.

I would call the airline and ask about "bereavement" fares. You will need to be able to provide information related the the deceased and the funeral home. One good thing about them is they are considered "full fare" so you will be able to change flight dates/times without penalties.

I'm sorry for your loss.

What we found when DH's dad died is that only the major carriers do bereavement fares and then its 30% off their list price. It was still much more expensive than booking last minute on a discount carrier. Booking last minute is still expensive though. We flew from Manchester, NH to Nashville, TN and normally tickets run us $200 - $250/pp. Last minute we paid $500/pp.

So sorry for your loss. I agree that kayak.com is a good place to start. Be sure to check on "airports nearby." You might also want to try last minute vacations on travelocity. When my DDad needed to travel for a funeral the package was cheaper than the flight.
