:drinking1 Party time is fast approaching and I thought we could all use some inexpensive wine ideas.
Our favorite is
Pepperwood Grove Merlot or Cabernet(under $9) people always ask what kind of wine it is and think it is expensive when we serve it.(we are big wine drinkers and used to serve Hess at our parties now we serve this instead to save some $$ and people like it just as much)
So your favorite cheap wine is........

Our favorite Champagne is calle Verde. It's under $5 a bottle and is the best we've ever had. It has a slightly sweet taste. It's all DH will drink.

Winking Owl Chardonnay...I get it at Aldi for 2.5 and it's pretty good. Oliver Soft Red at 7 per bottle...excellent.

I'm a big red wine drinker but living in PA its hard to get wines. We have to buy from the state store and can not have wine shipped in. No going to a grocery store for us!

I found a great deal this month, Concha Y Toro Castilla di Diablo (I think thats spelled close!) the Carmenere is on sale for $6.99, normally 9.99. Its a decent table wine. It takes much more expensive than $7!

Smoking Loon Merlot is a good deal too. Normally 10.99 I believe. I buy it when it goes on sale. I did not care for the Cab, normally I like Cabs more than merlots but not in this case.

Cline Syrah is also on sale this month for 9.99. Delicious! I like most the Cline offerings and look for the sales.

Pepperwood grove, I second that one.

A favorite of mine is the Greg Norman Cab/Merlot blend but only when its on sale. Its around $15.

I look for sales. The more $$ off the better. I have actually made it a bit of a game now. If I find a wine $3 off I will buy it to try it. Has to be $15 or under though. My DH does not drink wine so I limit how much i spend.

I have found I can try a lot of new wines this way. My method is a bit odd but it works for me!

Yellow Tail is good and when it is on sale it's 9.99 for 1.5L. I'm partial to Chardonney and Pinot Grigio. Walnut Crest has an okay Chardonney for about 7.99 on sale. Yellow Tail makes a good shiraz too. We have had good luck with almost all of the australian wines when they go on sale. Barefoot is a nice choice too. If I think of any others I will post again. We never spend more than 12.99 for 1.5L unless it is for a gift. Great Thread!

Definitely Charles Shaw (also known as 2 buck Chuck) at Trader Joes. They have Shiraz, Cab, and Chardonnay for 2.99 a bottle! :earseek:

Anyone hear the story about this wine? Apparantly, there was a nasty divorce between Charles Shaw and his wife. The wine that they make is actually really high quality wine, and should be sold for a lot more. But in the divorce, Charles decided to sell the wine for cheap so his wife wouldn't get any of the profits in the settlement. (Or something like that.) Anyone heard of this or know if it's true? :confused3 Thought it'd be interesting if it was!!!

DH and Love Ecco Domani Pinot Grigio ($7.99) and a resiling I can't think of the name. I know we get it at Wegmans for only $5.99. So yummy!

My favorite wine is Beringer White Zinfandel, about $8.00 a bottle. LOVE it!!

I found two Great bottles of wine recently at Trader Joe's

Trellis Vineyards Cabernet For $5.99 & Napa Valley Merlot $4.99 bottle. If you like red wine and have access to a Trader Joe's you have to give a bottle of these a try. In Mass Two Buck Chuck is Three Buck Chuck, Taxachusetts ya know ;) , and for $2 more the Napa Valley blows it away, IMHO.

I am a big Hess fan so I am definately going to try the Pepperwood Grove.

Other favorites of mine, especially for gift giving: Penny Hill Red Dot Shiraz -@16.00, Rutherford Hill Merlot 2001 - @ $19.00, Clois do Bois 2002, Pinot Noir & Rex Hill 2001 Pinot Noir - both @ $16.00

All this talk is making me thirsty..it's five o'clock somewhere, right :drinking1 :drinking1 :drinking1

Here are my favorites from my wine cooler (hard to keep stocked –– I keep drinking it!) and wine rack, all under $10. I work for a magazine that covers wine and Italian food, but I'm not an expert –– I just buy what I like (and usually shop for funky, fun labels, which has led me to some unusual winners –– and some crap wines as well!!)

• Fetzer Valley Oaks Cabernet-Shiraz –– goes well with red meats and thick red pasta sauces if you don't want a merlot. About $8-$9

• Snoqualmie Chenin Blanc –– very sweet & softer than a riesling so it pairs well with appetizers, esp. cheeses. $5.50-$6

• Fish Eye Pinot Grigio or Fish Eye Shiraz –– adorable label; very palatable and easy to drink for those who don't really like wine, like my husband. The Pinot Grigio is one of my favorites. $6

• Ca Del Sol Big House Red –– or Big House white. My favorite red table wine from California. I've only had the white once, but it was great, too. $10.99

• Delicato Pinot Grigio –– sold in what the company has dubbed a Bota box or in a regular glass bottle. Runs about $7 by the bottle or $17.99 for the box (which equals four bottles). You have to get past the stigma of boxed wine or serve it in a decanter.

• Echelon Viognier –– very different, especially if you like a slighly sweet, oily wine. Goes very well with white pasta sauces or pesto-based entrees. About $10-$12

I love this thread, BTW! Gives me something new to try.

I found the answer to your question...

I love yellow tail shiraz!!! But we mostly drink our own wine. We buy the juice and to the whole wine making process. Yummy! Ends up costing us roughly $1 to $2 a bottle.

I love this thread! I wrote down a few to try!

Jealous reading the other posts w/wines under $5/bottle...only product near that price in PA is Boone's Farm LOL. Riunite is close to $10, as are the bottom of the barrel (pun intended) Asti's.

I try and buy 1.5L if I can find them reasonable. Recently I've been buying Cavit Pinor Noir for 8.99. A 750ml is 6.59, so buying the bigger bottle is a better deal! I like Bolla Chianti as well.

Just curious, why is it so hard to find a cheap bottle of wine in PA?

if you're not embarrassed having jugs- Paisano is a great table red wine- works wonderful w/ pasta and ham for the holidays. smal jug 5.99 lg 8.99. We have pizza nite a couple of fridays a month w/ friends and this is what we will break out if we are not sampling a new find.

Lover's of sweet white wines that are easy to drink (not syrupy) will love Riunite D'Oro- really cheap!

ALthough I am a wine snob- my pocketbook doesn't match my taste buds so these work great for me for casual and holiday gatherings

PA laws are very strict. You can not buy outside the State control stores. The taxes are higher.

You can find inexpensive wines but they are generally slightly higher priced than elsewhere. I used to live in VA where wines were $2-3 dollars less per bottle than the same wine in PA.

We can not get wines shipped in either. So no wine.com for us. Also, Costcos, Sam's etc are not allowed to sell wine in PA. It has to be a state store. Until recently we could not buy it on sunday however now a select few of the state stores are now open on sunday.

I live in PA but I'm also a couple of miles from the MD border. They have a store at every corner it seems. Wish we had that many to choose from...
