Veruca Salt, the little brute,
Has just gone down the garbage chhute,
(And as we very rightly thought
That in case like this we ought
To see the thing completetly through,
We've polished off her parents, too.)
Down goes Veruca! Down the drain!
And here, perhaps, we should explain
That she will meet as she descends,
A rather different set of friends
To those that she has left behind --
These won't be nearly so refined.
A fish head, for example, cut
This morning from a halibut.
'Hello! Good morning! How d'you do?
How nice to meet you, how are you?'
And then a little further down
A mass of others gather round:
A bacon rind, some rancid lard,
A loaf of bread gone stale and hard,
A steak that nobody could chew,
An oyster from an oyster stew,
Some liverwurst so old and gray
One smelled it from a mile away,
A rotten nut, a reeky pear,
A thing the cat left on the stair. . .

:earseek: I like that way better than the song in the original movie! Sounds like they really sugar coated it. (No pun intended) Maybe I should go read the book before I see the new movie :scratchin

::yes::

Yes, when Chapter 10 of the book is entitled "The Family Begins to Starve" you know you aren't in the old movie anymore.

"And now, very calmly, with that curious wisdom that seems to come so often to small children in times of hardship, he began to make little changes here and there in some of the things that he did, so as to save his strength. In the mornings, he left the house ten minutes earlier so that he could walk slowly to school, without ever having to run. He sat quietly in the classroom during recess, resting himself, while the other rushed outdoors and threw snowballs and wrestled in the snow. Everything he did now, he did slowly and carefully, to prevent exhaustion."

I don't know if I am going to like this movie but I will see anything Johnny Depp is in

Thank you DemonLlama - I now have to stop at Barnes and noble on the way home! heheh

um - young adult or children's section? heheheh

ETA - I just hit b&n.com...I totally forgot Dahl wrote James and the Giant Peach - LOVED that book as a kid!

The moment she entered the room, one hundred squirrels stopped what they were doing and turned their heads and stared at her with small black beady eyes.

Veruca Salt stopped also, and stared back at them. Then her gaze fell upon a pretty little squirrel sitting nearest to her the end of the table. The quirrel was holding a walnut in its paws.

"All right," Veruca said. "I'll have you."

She reached out her hands to grab the squirrel. . . but as she did so . . . in that first split second when her hands started to go forward, there was a sudden flash of movement in the room, like a flash of brown lightning, and every single squirrel around the table took a flying leap towards her and landed on her body.

Twenty-five of them caught hold of her right arm, and pinned it down.

Twenty-five more caught hold of her left arm, and pinned that down.

Twenty-five caught hold of her right leg, and anchored it to the ground.

Twenty-four caught hold of her left leg.

And the one remaining squirrel (obviously the leader of them all) climbed up on to her shoulder and started tap-tap-tapping the wretched girl's head with its knuckles.

"Save her!" screamed Mrs. Salt. "Veruca! Come back! What are they doing to her?"

"They're testing her to see is she's a bad nut," said Mr. Wonka. "You watch."

Veruca struggled furiously, but the squirrels held her tight and she couldn't move. Then squirrel on her shoulder went tap-tap-tapping the side of her head with his knuckles.

Then all at once, the squirrels pulled Veruca to the ground and started carrying her across the floor.

"My goodness, she is a bad nut after all, " said Mr. Wonka. "Her head must have been quite hollow."

This was, for sure, my favorite movie as a kid. So when I heard it was gonna be remade I was thrilled. But when I heard it would have an IMAX version I nearly wet my pants. Can't wait.

OK - I HAVE read this as a kid...heheh...I didn't remember until the part with the Squirrels I think. (DemonLlama - I didn't see that post above from you before I bought the book) The part with the squirrels "tapping to find a 'bad nut'" totally jogged my memory.

I bought the Charlie and the chocolate factory/charlie and the glass elevator hardcover book last night (9.95 at barnes and noble)...it IS a quick read...I'm at the Mike Teavee part right now...

i can't WAIT to see this movie..totally hope it's squirrels and NOT golden eggs!

I picked up a copy of the book form the library last night too! I will admitt that at first, I was not too sure about the new movie, but now I am getting excited about it.

DD3 insist on watching the trailer over, and over, and...... She's so funny though. She tries to sing the song and says;
"Willy Wonka, Willy Wonka, the amazing chocolate DEER"

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: how cute!

Doesn't that song sound like something that would be in an amusement park ride...and, with just your luck, the ride would break down, and they wouldn't turn off the music?

Just like getting stuck in "The Cat in the Hat' at IOA or "It's a Small World" at MK?

heheh

That's what I was thinking. There was a horror movie, where the kids put on masks and some commercial came on singing "X more days til Halloween" or something like that. Then something would happen if you were wearing the mask. I don't remember what movie it was(maybe someone here knows what I'm talking about) or exactly how it went , but from what I remember, the Willy Wonka song reminds me of that song.

Giving my little squirrely thread a bump!

Where's the squirrel emoticon when you need it?

There's a book??? :confused3 :teeth:

I'll probably wait for it to be released on video to see it, but I can't wait!

oh
my
word...

wth is UP with this Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. I take it back - I never read this as a kid...this is one messed up/out there (literally!) story! heheh

vermicious knids? (pronouced - k'nids?) sheesh!

The Oompa Loompas scared me really good when I was a kid. But just the same I loved the original movie.

That was one of the "Halloween" movies. Part 3 or 4. I can't remember exactly.

I can't wait to see this! I'm a big Johnny Depp fan, and I love the original movie! :cool1:
