Charging for Lilly Belle now?

About if the cost is worth it...

If you already had a chance to ride it obviously the cost seems a waste.

Now, if you are a big Disney history buff and this is the only way to ride it...then maybe it is worth it.

I know I paid to take the Walk in Walt's Footsteps so that I could go in the apartment.
I guess the flipside to that would be that if you can afford it, it's not a bad deal for someone who loves Disney history. But what about the average family that would be interested but can't fork over $85 pp? It's my main problem with all of the upselling of 'experiences'.

I hate to even argue this because like I said in an earlier post, I don't approve of the up charges. But if it really is about having to baby sit the guests on the Lily Belle then I kind of understand it.

We've managed to ride it 3 times over the past dozen years. Each time we had a conductor who beautifully narrated most of the ride and was knowledgeable enough to answere all questions asked. I was amazed at the time that they offered such a wonderful experience for free, but it is nowhere worth $85.

Is it that much different than getting to go in Walt's Apartment or the Dream Suite? Yes, I am sure the average family would love to see those too, but it comes with a charge. I know when my kids were younger, we did the Walt's Footsteps tour simply so we could see inside Club 33. I was so disappointed when the Lilly Belle was damaged. Those who took the picture had planned this as they had to bring a screw driver and the guide was gone less than 5 mins. Very sad. But it was just one of many issues.

They also have issues with having the car out in certain weather conditions. At least if they sell tours they can plan ahead for staffing and possibly weather and you have a better chance of actually experiencing it than the rush to the station and hope they can accommodate that day system.

However, I would be happy if they just replicated the items in there and made it so that more people could ride it. I don't think there's really anything so important that it has to be that exact car. They didn't even think of the car until 8 years after Walt died. One thing I heard at some point was the carpet is the last thing Walt ordered for the park. But he didn't order it for the train car, and it's carpet, so after 50 years, if it needs to replaced, order or fabricate some more carpet in the same design. Walt ordered the pattern, not the actual strip of carpet.

The difference is that it has been free until now. I am not arguing with the reasons for having to protect it; if you look at my original post, I said that it's too bad the majority have to suffer from the actions of the few. I was arguing more with the logic that if it was important enough to you, the cost doesn't matter. I don't know how you differentiate between the true fans and the rabble, but it rubs me the wrong way to imply that money = class.

Wow. This shouldn't be shocking, but I'm still a bit shocked. We got lucky and made it on to the morning list in May 2015, and I'm so glad we got to do this before it became a "paid" experience. The car is beautiful, but I wouldn't pay $85 per person to ride in it. I'll shell out for the WoC Dessert Party and Fantasmic! seating because we have to eat anyway, and I prefer to sit at shows, but we can ride the train for free any time. The car isn't air conditioned and although it is beautiful, it can be uncomfortable on a hot day, especially when you have to stop at each station. The windows only open about 6 inches.

I wonder what the next upcharge will be?

This is one of the bigger money grabs in a while. Many inexpensive ways to keep an eye on guests in the Lily Belle while not charging an extra fee. I wonder if the beverage is a gallon of milk to go with the huge doughnut you would get for $85. Disney, keep the parks in perfect condition so when you do money grabs, they do not hurt as much.

In Disney's defense, haven't some of their donuts been in the $6-$8 in the parks lately? :p

That's what happened! I remembered everything being buckled down tight, like screwed down, on the Lilly Belle when we did the tour a couple years ago so I was surprised someone was able to steal something. Gah! People are ridiculous. Not all y'all here of course, just others!

It's been unavailable to anyone but Club 33 members. I don't see that as being free.

so what guarantee do they have that someone paying won't rip something off. I guess they will have their credit card number but still, how wwould they know who did it if the CM didn't witness it. Just a lame excuse for more $$$. BUT good news is it is optional. I don't pay extra for very much in the parks. And always have a wonderful time.

Well, I never got to ride the Lilly Belle but now I'm thankful that on our last trip it was parked at New Orleans Train Station and we got to peak inside and take some pictures of it because I will never pay $85 a person to ride in it!

It was free if you got to the train station first thing in the morning and inquired about riding the Lilly Belle. If they were planning on running it they would write your name down on a list and give you a time to come back later that day. They could only take about 10(?) people. It was a round the park trip and the conductor told us all sorts of stuff about the train and the parks. Totally free, not a club 33 member or even an annual passholder, only requirement was that you had park entry that day so you could be at the Main St station to sign up. I did it a couple years ago I think, I don't know when they stopped doing it.

I'm not a Club 33 member, and it was free all times we rode. We just went to the Main Street station first thing in the morning and signed up. One time they let us sign up but then they cancelled due to potential rain.

yes, they do have expensive doughnuts.
It was closed to the general public throughout most of 2014, and was reported here at the time: https://www.disboards.com/threads/no-more-lillybelle-unless-you-have-an-in.3250733
