we are heading to WDW for FD and trying to decide on our character meals. we are planning to do 1900 park fare and crystal palace for sure, and possibly chef mickeys, the princess dining at akershus and/or donald's safari breakfast.

which meal is better at these restaurants - breakfast or dinner?

I would suggest you look at the menus and character line ups then decide based on that.

Chef Mickey's and CP have the same characters each time, so just select the menu or meal time you'd find most convenient.

The Princess meal is one I'd probably choose by menu.

1900 Park Fare has completely different characters at B/D, so it is important to select the crew you prefer to see.

Tusker House is only a character meal at breakfast.

Crystal Palace- bfast
Tusker House- bfast (duh)
Chef Mickeys- if you're on DP, do dinner to get more bang for buck
Askerhaus- Bfast (b/c the norwegian food doesnt appeal to me at all)
1900 PF- I love both- BUT food not so great IMO at dinner. But characters make up for the food! Bfast is great all around. Be forwarned though- 1900 PF has ALWAYS been my longest wait for a table. Usualy at LEAST 30 minutes after ADR time. On our last trip it was an hour past, and we arrived 20 early so we waited 1 hr 20 min!!!

Chef Mickey's is really not my fave- but if you wanna see those characters, go for it. Ithink Tusker House is WAY better and you'll see mikcey and donald there so, i'd maybe just do that one.

My DH's favorite meal at Disney is the breakfast at Akershus.

Funny that was the only character meal that we didn't like. The meal wasn't worth the money and we felt super rushed. The princesses came and went within a second. Picture boom let me go to the next person. Couldn't take a second to talk to you.

The rest of the meals we went to were pretty good or in some cases fantastic. The best meal for the entire week was dinner at Ohana. That is unbelievable- so good~~~~

We prefer to do the breakfasts, the food is better!

Out of the options on your list our family favorite was 1900 Park Fare for dinner. My husband loved the food and my daughter loved cinderella's stepsisters. In fact dinner at 1900 Park Fare is where my daughter chose for her birthday dinner this upcoming August.

I prefer the character Breakfasts, the food is generally better, and the characters (appear) less rushed. My favorite is Chef Mickey

I also prefer the breakfast character meals. Chef Mickey's for dinner was good the last time I did this- I love the parmesean mashed potatoes!!! We use to love doing dinner at Liberty Tree Tavern, but sadly no characters are there anymore :sad1: I have had the best luck with breakfast generally speaking though- but like someone mentioned it is hard to mess up eggs!

We really do love Tusker House with Donald- the characters spent a lot of time with us the last time I was there. Have fun!!!!:thumbsup2

I agree with the other suggestions. First check the character lineup and decide which ones you want to meet. Yes, breakfast is hard to screw up so most often the food is better. We find that there is way to much food included in the DDP so we have a late breakfast and then an early dinner. Using the snack credits in between. If that would work for you, you would also need to decide whether you want your larger meal for breakfast or dinner.

We also decide what we plan to do during that day and that might decide which meal we do or what time we go.

We go for the dinner when we are on the meal plan. Here is my reason, it is easy to bring granola bars and cereal to eat in the room before heading off to a park. We then eat a counterservice lunch around 11am and sit down dinner around 4:30pm. Then maybe a snack in the evening. Just my opinion! We do do the breakfast at AK. I can't say I love the food!

We did Chef Mickey's around 11:30am and had a great meal, plenty of character interaction and from what I read a pretty serene dining room. We were full until later in the evening too. If you hit MK say at 8am, it would be pretty easy to walk over to the CR or take the monorail for this late bfast ADR. Also there was plenty of hot fresh food throughout the meal.
On our AK day we chose CS resort breakfast, snack at the park and dinner at Boma right after closing.

1900 park fare: never had breakfast but dinner was really good. We thought the food was really good and the character interaction was one of the best we had. DD really liked the step sisters.

crystal palace: This was DH's favorite dinner all week. I thought both breakfast and dinner were equally good. The puffed french toast is awesome!

chef mickeys: did both breakfast and dinner here. Thought breakfast was the better meal.

akershus: had lunch here and didn't really like it much (except for dessert which was really good). However, we would do this meal again because DD loves princesses and they spent a lot of tme with our kids.

donald's safari breakfast: food is good and character interaction was also pretty good. DD liked the parade. But would only do this if I got the 8:00 seating.

Breakfast is pretty basic everywhere and much harder to mess up.:goodvibes This can be especially important if you have picky eaters/kids in your group.:snooty: If you are on the DDP and want more value, then do dinners. Also, as pp mentioned, research what characters are at each meal, so you get to see who you want to see.:3dglasses

In March we went for a week, all of our TS were character dining. I have a 2 year old:

Crystal Palace - dinner
Cinderella Royal Palace - dinner
Hollywood and Vine - Lunch
Cafe Mickey - Breakfast
Ohana - Breakfast
Arkerhus - Dinner

I really had no complaints but my preference was dinner, not necessarily because of the food (I love breakfast - favorite meal) but I thought it was a nice way to end the day to have a sit down meal with the family after a full day in the park.
