How much does this usually cost and are all characters available? Seems I can't get too much info from Disney until I'm ready to book! Also, it seems from reading other posts that you can visit other resorts while staying at one. Is this so? Can you eat at other resort restaurants?

You can visit or eat at any of the other Disney resorts. Animal Kingdom Lodge requires you to actually have a priority seating at one of their restaurants in order to visit the resort (drive onto property in your own vehicle) if you are not staying there. However, we have never been asked to show resort id when getting on any WDW bus, even the AKL one.

Different characters are availble at different character meals. For instance, the Crystal Palace @ MK is Pooh oriented, Chef Mickey's at the Contemporary is Mickey and friends, Ohana at the Polynesian is Goofy with Chip and Dale, the Cape May Cafe at the Beach Club has Minnie with Goofy and others, Donald's Breakfastasaurus at the AKL features Donald and friends, the Princess breakfast at Norway in Epcot features various princess (except Cinderella), Park Fare at the Grand FLoridian offers Alice and Peter Pan, etc. You are certainly not restricted to your own hotel for dining. We find it quite fun to dine at different hotels during our stays. The transportation does not run between hotels, but you can coordinate this by taking a bus to say DTD or MGM and then hoping to the bus for the resort to where your meal is planned. Cast members at your hotel will offer good options for the intra-WDW transportation options.

Welcome to the Dis! Yes, you can eat at any restaurant you want whether you are staying on or off property. The charaters vary depending on where you want to eat. For a whole listing of dining options, prices, location, and characters go to the home page, click on "dining"(in blue) and then scroll down to "character dining" and click. Here you will get all the info you need!
Hope I helped and ENJOY!! Oh and plan on making priority seating arrangements!;)
