Changing use year at non sold out resort

When we initially joined DVC in 2009, our kids were young and we frequently travelled in Oct and March, so our September use year contracts worked really well. Now that they are older, missing high school/college isn’t an option, and most of our travel is in July and then also some in Dec and March.

Our current September is really inconvenient, due to majority of our travel being in summer.

We are adding on direct points at RIV now and so I want to switch to a December or June use year. For our current direct RIV contracts, because the resort isn’t sold out can DVC ever change the use year, or buy back my current contracts directly and allow me to purchase new contracts with the same number of points at RIV since it isn’t sold out yet?

Or, is my only option to sell my existing September use year contracts on resale and then repurchase with a December or June use year. I am guessing this is the case, but just wanted to ask

The UY is tied to your deeded contact and cannot be changed. You can sell the contact you bought in 2009 and purchase that resort resale but then you lose the ability to book Riviera and future resorts with it.

You can purchase an entirely separate membership with a different UY (I.e. I have three different UY) but will not be able to use all of your points together between memberships without calling member services and having them transfer points between UY. Each of those transferred points keep their existing use year. If you want to buy a separate UY for your Riviera purchase, Disney will allow it but may give you some push back but if you're firm that you want a new membership with a different UY, they will sell it to you.

I would advise against selling and buying a resale contract if you're purchasing Riviera and want to use your points there. You're far better off with the inconvenience of a sept UY and one membership to use all your points in a pool at 7 months.

They won’t change the terms of your current contract. I asked about that when we first bought and had to sell the contract we had after we added on a new membership with a better UY.
