Hi gang I got the strangest email from a company claiming to be a friend of ebay, and pinpics the message is below.

Update on this.
Okay I think I got it figured out, it was a person on ebay that some of us bought pins from. so I'm changing the thread from question to a just an FYI for some of you.

I got this email yesterday.

"Hi ,

We wanted to let all of our eBay and PinPics friends know that we have a Pin Bag Special
running. Everyone is getting ready for their Holiday Vacations and we thought we might help
and save you some money!!!!"

My concern is they sent the email wrong, and included a list of over 100-email addresses in their message, so everybody on that mailing list now has over 100 emails addresses, and the spam has already begun. I'm getting chain letters adds for cell phones, and this and that.

I'm curious if anybody else got the email, because it will take us months to remove ourselves from the list we will be placed on.

PS gang I just looked at the email addresses some of you are on it, so good luck.

I got that email yesterday, too, and I haven't bought anything from ebay. Hope I don't get lots more unwanted messages.
Penny

I rec'd the e-mail too. But I get so much spam already, I probably won't notice. DH plays those free internet lottos. That's the motherlode of unwanted spam.:p

I don't think I received this email, but I have been receiving alot of spam lately. How do I get myself removed from these email lists? Or is that the $1,000,000 question?

Leslie

If you received the email and the sender mentions ebay....report them to ebay. Sending emails of that kind are a suspendable offense and ebay will boot the sender.

Leslie--I find that if I ignore them, and don't respond, most of the time I don't get another email from that person. When I have emailed and asked to be removed, I end up getting more from them and others.

And if I don't know the sender---I delete the email without opening it.

I got one the other day from HAHAHAHA---titled "The Real Story Behind Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs"

~Kathie - I rec'd the SW e-mail too a few weeks ago. Like you, I deleted it w/o opening.
I was just reading some anti-spam info this morning. The site suggested not replying, even when you ask to be removed. They said that by doing this you are confirming your e-mail is valid.
I suppose it is just like getting an unlisted number. You just have to change your e-mail in order to stop it (until they find you again).

They mention Ebay and pinpics.

The only reason I even went to the site was because they mentioned pinpics, I thought they set some sort of a special deal. But when I got there the deal was no deal at all.

I have already contacted ebay, though I doubt it will do any good. Figgy if you read this and can shed some light on the subject let us know if you know this person since they are using your sites name.

As to deleting spam the best way is to ignore and hope for the best. I found that the ones I reply to are returned as dead links anyway, if you like you can look and see if there is a to remove you from our list option and follow the instruction, but your name is still on a few list being sold to email multilevel marketers out there, and this will make it worse sometimes.

You can try and see if the person is promoting a web site, find out who is hosting the site and report the spam to the ISP hosting the site.

And gang the best suggestion I can offer is spend $29.00 on the Norton Antivirus program, it comes with an email checker that will block malicious code from being executed, like snow white and the dwarfs. Also if your email has a preview option, like outlook does that's all it will take to activate viruses. You can turn it off though.

Also there are ways to help with spam like report them to your ISP, and ask for a block on email spam is available, or software that will delete some of it like messages with no subject line things like that.

The worst is the email with HTML code imbedded inside some of it will open you browser and take you to the sites they are selling if your security is not set up right.

We had an incident at work a coworker signed up for a free magazine subscription and the spam increased 75% to their email.

If you want to sign up for free stuff remember nothing is free they will sell your name just like your phone number, so best bet is to set up a second email and use it for your spam mail, keep your real one safe for family and friends, oh and pin buddies of course.

So be careful out there kids in my opinion the internet is 50% porn and junk.

EdRaulMan, Can you translate any of that into non-computerese? I didn't understand too much of what you said. I have the newest version of NAV, but cannot find anything about an email checker. I understand now that I should not reply to spam, and will not do so again. I can't change my email address because mine is the master name on our aol account so it is not changable.

Leslie

Leslie---I always knew YOU were the master!!! :D

Ed--I have reported infractions to ebay and I have always received a response with a follow up...after the canned response of course. :) They do take every complaint seriously.
Thanks for all the tips.

Hopefully between ebay and Figgy.....it will be taken care of. There is nothing worse than junk mail!

We didn't make it to our Thanksgiving dinner in the Keys this because an accident closed the road

We sadly had to force our selves to eat a wonderfully delicious meal at Chef Mickeys...but if I knew all this
spam was going to be coming our way...i would have saved the money..

Seriously the letter that EdRaul..got..had many many maybe over 100 of recognizeable e-mails included with it

Luckily we aren't in the spamming business ourselves, because a gold mine would've dropped in our
lap..did anyone else who received this letter get all of the e-mail address attached???

And Leslie I have passed on your plea to RaulEd..and as soon as he is finished doing his chores (ha ha ha)
he will try and put it in computorese for you...

A couple of years ago my ISP recommended http://www.spamcop.net This site is generally free, although there are subscription options. They are able to dissect your spam, determine the actual sourse and relay ISPs, and will send messages to the ISPs and certain relays from you. It does NOT go to the spammer. I have gotten messges from some major ISPs (such as SWBell) thanking me and letting me know they have killed service.

To turn on your email protection, and clean those nasty viruses out of your computer. A non techies approach.

This can be a family project, or a by yourself approach it does not matter which. note kids get scared of viruses and may have nightmares so be prepared to confuse them with parental goodness.

First fill your bathtub with warm soapy water. Use good soap.

Put on some Dean Martin music the good old romantic stuff viruses hate that stuff.

Have an 8 by 11 color picture of Bill Gates standing by just in case you need support.

now remove the cover off your computer.

Find the hard drive, It's the hardest thing in there, and its always full of those internet cookies.

Brush off the cookies (DON'T EAT ANY OF THE COOKIES THEY ARE VIRUSED)
I know I know some are double chocolate macadamia nut…. Throw them away, be brave soldier.

Now take the hard drive to the tub and soak it in the water, use a back brush and scrub it nice and clean. Sing some rub a dub tub songs if you think it will help.

Take it out of the water, and put it back in the computer, it will spin up and dry itself.

Just to be safe before you put it back in the computer flash the Gates picture at it, and if any viruses are still in there they will do a kamikaze dive back into the tub.

Now your asking yourself why not just flash the picture, and avoid the tub altogether, well remember viruses work in wolf packs, and water gets them wet, and makes this thread more funny. So drop it and keep reading.

Now sometimes viruses will hide in the memory modules… take no prisoner is my moto, put a fresh new cookie on the hard drive, and surf to a clean wholesome good web site like www.mycutelittledoggie.com (don't go to Dis boards your drive is still wet and all your friends will know you have a virus, and wont pin trade with you anymore.)

The cookie will become all warm and gooey, when the images of peoples pets, and the theme song of, how much is that doggie in the window starts to play.

The viruses will not be able to control themselves and will try to attack the cookie and try to redirect your web browser to a nasty place like www.freecellphoneandbritneyspearsnaked.com or www.reallycheappinsnondisney.com now is your chance take the Norton Antivirus box, and beat the virus silly… Note if you are good and have practiced you can use the CD-ROM of Antivirus like a ninja star and smack the virus, but you only get one chance at this so practice please.

Now your computer is virus free and clean. :p

Alas Leslie in all reality, you need Norton 2001, but Norton does not recognize AOL email so it can't protect incoming email.

Disclaimer

Don't put any internal part of your computer in the tub… shesssh put the whole computer in the tub instead. The surgeon general has determined that anybody that reads this puts their computer in the tub, then gets mad at me cause the computer don't work anymore, is a virus and must be erased. Leslie is the master and can use the CD as a ninja star. Those web sites don't work don't you feel silly for even trying to click on them… duh!!!!

My question is...if I am the master.....how come I am the one doing all the work in my house? I feel more like the slave! I need to regain control!!!!!

I have NAV 2002. I have no viruses, but I certainly do get spam! Guess it is just a part of internet life and I have to learn to ignore it.....

Leslie

All I can say is Jeff has met his match!!! :D

Thanks for the chuckle. Hope to see you and Donna Friday night at the Contemporary.

Hey Kathie...

Can't wait to see you there.....maybe you can take Raul off of my hands for awhile....I have to live w/ him
and my chest is sore from laughing at him (or is it with him?) all week end...he even broke up Goofy..he had to leave the stage before he giggled out loud.....

See you real soon Mousketeer..
