I called MS today, about 50 days prior to my vacation, to make sure I understood the 30-day waitlist scenario correctly. She told me that she would go ahead and change my waitlist so that it was maintained until 7-days prior.

So, if they can make that change now, why don't they just set it up that way from the beginning?

I made reservations today and the option for a 7 day wait list was offered to me along with 30 days. I took it with an automatic confirmation.

You weren't offered that choice?

If the waitlisted ressie takes less points than an original ressie, when a waitlist comes through and a member cancels the original ressie inside of 30 days, then the extra points go into "holding" status. Some members may not want this to happen, so I expect that is why the waitlist 30 day/7 day difference exists. That being said, it would be good for MS to explain this when a waitlist is set up and a member could make a decision then if they chose.

jekjones1558 is exactly right. I recently called to book a 5 night stay in a studio at VWL for my DS11 and myself and only the first 3 nights were available. I booked a 1BR for the last 2 nights and waitlisted for the studio for the last 2 nights. The CM suggested that I do the 30 day waitlist as the 1BR required 32 more points than the studio and if the change were made in the last 30 days, 32 points would go into holding. I later called back and cancelled the 1BR and replaced it with a studio cash reservation for the last 2 nights while retaining my waitlist for the studio on points. This time, the CM advised using the 7 day window. In both cases, the CM gave me the right advice. The good news is that the waitlist cleared and we have all five nights for points.

In my case, my waitlisted reservation requires more points than my existing.

In that case you could have been offered the 7 day option right away, I guess. Oh well, next time you can ask if the CM forgets to volunteer.

Many thanks to the original poster. We have been waitlisted for quite a while for a vacation that is occuring around July 4th weekend. So far the waitlist has added two of the three days that we need, but we are still awaiting word on the last night of our trip. On a whim, I called MS to see if we were on the 31 day or the 7 day waitlist. I was surprised to learn that we were on the longer waitlist. I requested to be switched to the 7-day waitlist because in the event that the grand villa becomes available for the last night of our trip, it will increase the number of points necessary for our reservation when we release the 2BR and the studio. I was wondering just how long we were going to be on the waitlist and this thread has more than answered that question.

Now if only that OKW GV would free up for July 4th...
