I don't know what to do. DH got a seasonal job at TRU and is only getting 9 hours a week. That's less than his unemployment. So he's going to try to ask for more hours. He's hoping they keep him on after Dec 31. However, we have a WDW trip scheduled for our anniversary Dec 3-5. Should he ask to have those days off or should we take our chances that he gets the days off? The schedules come out on Saturday and we leave on a Wednesday. It's a room only so I have the 5 day window but knowing on Saturday may not help. I guess I could always call and rebook it so I don't lose any money. I was really looking forward to it. AKL and anniversary dinner at Boma but him having a job comes first.

I would rebook the trip for after the holidays.

TRU will start getting insanely busy soon, and he will probably get as many hours as he can handle. I worked for them as a holiday temp, and then was hired on after for regular season. I don't recall them authorizing any time off the month of december leading up to Christmas, but then that was a long time ago so my memory might be a little off.

If the hours he's getting aren't sufficient and he's going to ask for more, how do you think it will look if he then asks for time off?

Not good, I'm afraid...and if he has any desire of wanting to keep the job after the 31st asking for time off now would be a detriment, in my mind.

I'd reschedule the trip.

If it were me, I would definitely cancel the trip.

You probably already know what you should do.

I'm sorry but I also agree with the PPs. If this were just a job that he took to make pocket moeny, the answer might be different. But since he's hoping to become a permanent employee, asking for time off during the store's busiest season is not in his best interest.

DD #1 works retail and is a permanent employee. They are not allowed to ask for/take any time off between the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and after New Years. If your DH is hoping to become a permanent employee I wouldn't ask for any time off during that time.

Honestly, I'm surprised you're even asking this question. If one of us were out of work and struggling, there's no way we would take a trip. I say cancel. It will be there next year.

I probably would postpone too. I see that you are close enough to drive down in just a few hours so perhaps you can re-schedule for some time after the holidays?

You were just at the AKL in October 2009 and then before that at POP in June 2009 and off-site in March 2009. There is no way I would take 4 trips, even short ones, when my DH is laid-off.

Since he is getting less than unemployement does that mean he has exhausted his unemployment. If he wants to be a full time employee he needs to to everything he can for the company and ask for nothing in return. If he becomes permanent he will never have off at that time of year.

Two nights at AKL and eating at Boma is not a cheap trip.

Cancel the trip.

Wow. I didn't even see all those trips. :sad2:

I would cancel without missing a beat. As much as I love Disney, it is an extra and we would never consider going if we did not have the money for it and our situation was not stable.

I am sorry things are hard for you right now, but I doubt being worried about his job would let you enjoy your weekend away fully.

I hoe he is able to find a permanent job-good luck!

Thanks to everyone for the responses. I wouldn't have even thought about keeping it if I didn't know it was already paid for and we both have AP. I'm using points from my Disney Visa. DH didn't exhaust his unemployment but with him getting a job I think they're going to cut if off. I've already told DH I'm going to cancel it.

If I were unemployed, there's no way I'd be taking a trip to WDW.

If I were working a job (a) that was bringing in less than the unemployment compensation I'd been drawing and (b) was set to end on 31 December, there's absolutely no way, not in a million gazillion years that I'm taking a trip to WDW.

WDW trips are luxuries.

If you have APs and live that close I would just do a couple of spir of the moment days there and drive home. No need to have an expensive dinner or overnight stay.

Save your Disney points for when you can really enjoy it OR to use for next years' APs.

If you have AP's and its paid for with Visa rewards why not let it ride? I wouldn't dare ask for time off but if it happens that he is off for those days I don't see how staying home could improve the situation:confused3 Like you said if he ends up working just move the ressies.
