I imagine you can hear similiar comments anywhere in the US.

That's true, Alan and PG, but I believe it's much worse in the south, especially where I live. People around here are still stuck in the Civil War era.

Nevertheless, his Mama was called that from a bus in Brooklyn, too so it's up in the North, too.

The biggest difference I find here is that they keep it amongst like minds here. I doubt the people you're talking about would say the same thing in "mixed company". I think that's a part of Southern hospitality. In NY they'd tell you to your face!

I'm not generalizing about ALL southerners though. Generalizing about all southerners would include me. I'm definately not in the Civil War era either. I live in the "good ole boy" part of the south.

yep, it definitely happens up north too. i very vividly remember the first time i heard a racial slur - i was about 8.
