A "racial slur" cost an overly confidant woman her job!!!
Quite a few years back, I was the Assistant Director Of Nurses at a medical facility in NC. I was interviewing nurses for a position we had open. First lady who interviewed with me was a sweet, very personable Afro-American lady. She had very little work experience, however, and I really was hoping for someone with a great deal more.
Next to be interviewed was a white woman who had seen the Afro-American lady leaving my office. She made a remark concerning her that included a "racial slur". I happen to be white also, and apparently this made her feel safe in doing so. She had lots and lots of work experience and good references. Did she get the open position? Absolutely not!!!! I chose the lady with less experience but with an ability to show compassion and kindness. I felt we didn't need anyone with a negative attitude to add to our already overpowering problems!
