Sounds like something a camping trip could cure!

We thought we'd come down Dec 24, stay somewhere quiet and cheap until our Jan 2 reservations at The Fort. It needs to be within a couple hours of The Fort, full hookup, fishing is a must, GC welcome would be a big plus.

Any ideas ?

Cherry Pockets Fish Camp & Restaurant in Lake Wales, Florida.

http://www.cherrypocket.com/our_history

The side menu has a place to click on "Motel & RV Park"

It is a bit off the beaten path, but totally worth the drive. Frank would love the fishin'. The restaurant is in the "Florida Cracker" tradition. It's an experience! It would probably take 45-60 minutes to get to the Fort. Most of that is the trip off the main highway to get back to Cherry Pockets. We go there 2 or 3 times a year for lunch.

Good for 2-3 days....or in Frank's case...2-3 weeks.

Not sure if you'd use the GC much, though. You can, just don't know that you would.

Another place is River Ranch - also in Lake Wales. It's not cheap, though.
Lots of fun, good fishin', not cheap.

ETA: The State Parks in the area are total crap. I don't recommend them at all, Denise. Donnie might chime in with some info about Turkey Lake near Universal. He stays there a lot when he can't get into the Fort or doesn't want to spring full price for the Fort. He says it's really nice.

Also - a little further away is Jetty Park at Cape Canaveral. You would not use the GC at all, but you'd see the cruise ships come and go, and you can fish in the Atlantic off a beautiful pier. You might want to check that out.

As soon as I'm done looking at the food menu, i'll get to the Rv part of Cherry Pocket. :lmao:

We stayed at River Ranch this past June and had a good time. Like the pp stated, it is expensive and everything extra to do costs a fee (except the petting zoo).

Here is a link to our photos.

River Ranch

River Ranch is more of a luxury RV resort, Denise. It didn't start out that way, but that's what it's morphed into over the years. It is actually as expensive or more expensive as the Fort.

Now, another choice is a private RV park at Exit 44 on I-4. Fantasy of Flight is in the back yard of this park. It will take you 30 minutes to get to the Fort and some Fort Fishin!!

LeLynn Resort. This is about 2 miles from my house. Very neat & tidy, mostly retirees. They don't have their own website but you can have a look-see here:

It sure does look beautiful, great pictures. I'm assuming the pool is included in the price.

It appears to have fishing there, right? It says dog/weight, know what the weight limit is ?

Yes it is. We loved our stay. The resort is very spread out so we got the most enjoyment riding around in the golf cart. The kids loved the store and the putt putt golf also.

If i get ressies and you are close to the fort, we should have christmas dinner together.

Denise, I don't know if it's available because so many snowbirds have found it but Turkey Lake is $15 a night and the lake is right there and ranked in the top 5 bass fishing in Florida. I know we stayed a couple nights after Christmas last year but couldn't get a 3rd because they were booked. PM me for the number.

Now dont be giving out my home.....I was just here today. We "move in" in Nov. It is fairly nice park. Nice owners/employees. There is very little shade and no cable tv. We looked at several parks in the area and this was, by far, the best one. I was told today that they only had a few sites left because they fill up with snowbirds, so if interested, call now to make ressies.

I think this is a sweet little park. Glad everything worked out for you. PM me if you have any questions about the area. I'm only 2 miles away! :thumbsup2

River Ranch

Boy do I feel stupid. Didn't know what River Ranch was and I grew up 15 miles away. The pics look nice.

We haven't camped there but http://www.campingspacecoast.com/longpoint/index.php looks real appealing. It's a county park that appears to be great for fishing, biking and the beaches. They only have 15 sites that are full hookup and 100+ other partial sites. It's on a little island (well almost), on the intracoastal waterway within biking distance of the Sebastian Inlet.

Deb, can you tell me in order, the proximity to The Fort for these CG'S ? Thanks

Salt Springs in the Ocala National Forest is a very nice National Park CG. We go there all the time. Full hook-up, very quiet and the fishing is wonderful!! It is part of Lake George.
