I don't think our house could have central a/c added, so we work with two small window units--6,000 and 5,000 btus respectively.
The larger one is set to 71, which makes one room very cold and cuts the heat in the other rooms. The smaller one doesn't even have a temperature guide, but it's the only unit we could find that would fit in our bedroom window. We only turn it on at night.
In the winter, we usually set it to 64/5 during the day and drop it to 62/3 at night. Any colder and the hot water (connected to the radiators) doesn't heat as well.
