Census~required by law??

Just because the Census worker is REQUIRED to lock up all information at all times doesn't mean he/she will lock it up. Before you give the Census worker any info, I would ask to see the so called lock up method he/she is using.
The messenger bag I carried with me last year was heavy enough without also carrying my safe! ;)

On a side note, what bothers me is the number of census workers who are physically threatened for doing their jobs. Census workers live in the communities they enumerate. Many of the 2010 workers are people laid off during the recession looking for some income, or retirees trying to make ends meet. They are not the Gestapo or the Red Guard.

(Not directed at you, gottaluvPluto, just a general comment and I'm too lazy to open up another post LOL)

That's something I have thought about also. I'm guessing that we'll be hearing some news story about a census worker that is attacked or killed by some crazy census conspiracist. I hope I'm wrong, but the media and certain mentally unbalanced politicians have brainwashed a segment of our population into fearing the census and the workers to the point where they feel like they need to defend themselves. It's crazy what has been allowed to go on.

I have a question for those that work for the census.
when the worker shows up here because I didn't fully complete the form, and I tell them that I am not including the other info, just my count, are they going to keep coming back?

because I will be polite, but I won't budge, and they are not law enforcement, so it is really going to annoy me if they keep showing up here after I tell them I am not completing the form any further.

Here's my confusion...

People are willing to give out this information at a doctor's office. Many times, those files are NOT locked and some offices have shelves where you can see the files right out in the open. All it takes is someone to walk right in and take it because it's not as if you need clearance to walk into a clinic or doctor's office. Some of the workers are not given background checks and have full access to your personal information, including your medical records. Heck, sometimes even the doctors can be questionable. Teachers are part of this, having access to your address, phone numbers, etc. Coaches can see some medical history when they require a physical for sports, etc. And all you have to do is turn on the news to hear about a teacher who was having sex with his or her students. There are MANY more examples such as this. But when it comes to the government and filling out the census, something required by law (and ALL of the form is required, not just a general number), suddenly people are arguing about privacy, etc. I'm just failing to see any consistency with the privacy argument...and don't understand what makes a person decide that it's perfectly acceptable to not obey the law when they willingly give out the exact same information to those who don't exactly take the same precaution to protect you.

I'm really not trying to be snarky or anything. I'm just not seeing the logic. :confused3

You will be notated as a refusal and it will be elevated up to the Local Census Office. A supervisor from the LCO may/will contact you. If you continue to refuse, it will be then forwarded to the regional office and then on. I'm only a low level supervisor, I only forward the refusal to my supervisor who takes it from there. But you WILL be contacted again.

And again, and again, and again -- costing the government more and more money. And causing your county/state to lose out on funding.

This is something that I try hard not to think about. I go into neighborhoods that I normally would not go into and approach people that I normally would go the other way. But, I don't have any job other than the Census and I need to pay the bills. So I do what I have to.

Sorry, didn't mean to scare you. I just feel that (not only with the census) that with all the hatred being spewed from some media outlets and "entertainers", that something is bound to happen. Whether it is something racial or otherwise, it seems like only a matter of time. Good luck with your job. I'm sure you'll have some crazy stories to tell after all is said and done.

I personally think for myself, and I don't even watch the news, I have my own reasons for the way I filled out the paperwork.
no conspiracy involved, thanks :)

well first of all, I plan to tell them not to bother coming back, my answer won't be any different. It will not be my fault if they don't listen and do come back :)
and I did fill out part of it, just the parts I didn't feel were too intrusive, so they have the count. so no funding will be lost :)

Please fill it out. It takes no more than 5 minutes, asks no personal info other than your race. I would not worry about the penalty for not filling it out.

no personal information??? Mine asked whether I own or rent my home. Without trying to sound like a raving Libertarian, what business is that of theirs? Besides, I'm sure the IRS has that info somewhere. As for race, I checked most all of them. (I don't think I'm pacific islander) I defy them to prove otherwise. I'm pretty sure we're all some kind of mix, unless you're a third generation immigrant like DH or something. The constitution only requires "enumeration.". That is the only part of the form I take seriously.

Then again, I am from west Texas. 23% of respondants in 2000 said they take a ferry to work. We are about as land-locked as you can get! I wouldn't trust the data from the census, except for the numbers. And even then I wonder.

Maybe I need to go into business selling tin foil hats. Seems like there's a run on the market for them again. :lmao:

Seriously, I just hope that the fines for refusing to obey the law aren't too severe. Isn't that what they do if they decide to enforce, fine people?

They have not been shown to be 100% effective against nosy census workers. To truly protect our homes from these Spring and Summertime pests, the only real defense is duct tape. Seal all entryways and windows to keep your home census worker free this season.

yep, $100, pocket change:)

Do you realize how much out there is public record?

Your neighbors can figure out if you own or rent without you telling them.

Sure you can argue why do they not retrieve that data themselves--but really, is there much trouble in you providing the data?

You are not protected from people knowing if you own or rent. Very easy to look up.

I'd fill it out, if they'd send me one.

I finally went to the library to get one, since they never sent me one. I had to go during the hours taht they had the "help you fill out your form" person there, because the library itself didn't have the forms, just the dude who was there to help people filll it out.
