Cell phones while docked in Port Canaveral

They were probably assuming they phones would pick up the ships cellular-at-sea signal not realizing it was turned off. If it was on in port cell phones would pick up the ships signal as it would be closest and therefor strongest.

No charges on our Canadian cell phones either!

I called our cell provider before our last cruise (it was the first time we were using SmartPhones) and T-Mobile said we might get charged roaming while in port. Even if we were just driving by boats in port (?!).

We used our phones onboard prior to sailing and at breakfast on the last day and no charges were made.

I suspect T-Mobile customer service people don't really know and are providing a general answer just to play it safe.

I didn't know if Canadian cell carriers charged roaming in the states or not. We certainly pay them while in Canada, and sometimes even just near the border!

This is not true. The ship has to have "cellular at sea" off while in port, I believe they turn it on once the ship is like 3-5 miles from land.

That was my experience as well. My iPhone gave me a message when I was out of their range.

Anyone else not been charged in St Thomas w/ AT&T for calls? I have never heard that one. I guess Puerto Rico would be ok them too.
I have my MiL's phone on our plan and I don't know what she did but somehow she got a $2.99 charge.

ETA- she does not have a data phone so it can't be a charge for data.

I have Verizon and they do not charge extra for San Juan or St. Thomas

We've made plenty of calls from the port while on the ship without any problems.
