SPRINT PCS user here. During all the visits we have made, my phone has worked when it was most needed. That being said, I didn't need it much. Cellular signal is affected not only by the carrier, tower location and blockage (cement walls, etc.) but by the actual PHONE as well. With SPRINT it seems SANYO phones pull stronger signals. I currently have a SAMSUNG (most user friendly IMHO) and it does okay, but not splended. With PCS if the signal is not clear enough it simply drops the call. Sometimes I would rather have poor quality than no call at all, but, hey, that's the way it works.
We also take along walkie-talkies just in case. There are 6 in our group and only two of us carry cell phones so we will be using the W/T this trip. Caution: decide ahead of time which channels to use and in what order. Since so many other people are using W/T, you need to have alternatives.
Of course there is always the: "If all else fails, meet in front of the castle at 5:00" option.
