I hope this is the board I can ask something like this. I hate picking up voice mail messages on my cell phone. I have to dial in, then I have to listen and if I don't delete it properly it comes back again, and I think I need to pick it up again, etc. etc. A home answering machine is different because you can press the button and do something else but the cell phone voice mail I HATE!. I already have a message that says, "This is me, sometimes I listen to my messages, sometimes I don't", but with two people who call me, this is just not working. Its never a message that's brief; "Call me", "your car is ready", etc. Its a looonnng, rambling message with the time and the date, what they did, what they plan to do. etc. I actually had one message that was 4 minutes long of NOTHING. I would like some suggestions that are creative and not rude. I prefer text messages. Those I see almost right away but if I tell a repairman to leave a message, I would like to have them feel they could. I usually warn them ahead of time about my existing message but for those who don't take the hint, I need something a bit more forthright.

Verizon has a visual voice mail system where I think you can delete messages without ever listening to them. Maybe you could get something like that.

"Please leave a message. Messages are limited to 30 seconds so be as brief as possible. The best way to reach me is through text messaging."

I also prefer text communications, but voice mail is no biggie. As soon as someone starts to ramble I delete the message and hope that there was nothing important at the end of it.

Yeah I have to listen all the way through to delete and that is annoying so what I do is listen up to the point I need to and then just hang up. Later when playing on the computer or whatever I sit down and play the messages over the speaker phone so they just go on and on and I can tell when they are over and delete them then.

I just don't think that I should have to incurr an additional cost because people like rambling messages or messages at all. The person is question will call me, tell me she left a message and I always tell them I didn't hear it because I hate VM so I wait until they "accummulate". In truth I have listened to message but I am trying to discourage message leaving.

You can get a Google Voice account. It's free. You can leave different voicemail messages for different people. And have some people's #'s go right to voicemail. It will also try to translate the message into text (sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't - but I can usually get the main idea) that can be emailed to you or you can see it on your Google Voice account - it may be able to send a text, also, but I haven't tried. If you have a smart phone, there's an app to read the voicemail right on your phone.

LOL, my message to others when they call my number is "Don't leave me a message, I ain't callin' ya back."

"please don't leave me a message, I probably won't listen to it. If you want me to get in touch with you, text me instead"

Have you considered calling your cell provider and asking them to remove your VM account so that nobody can leave you messages??

And for the person that wanted to avoid paying to listen to their vm. I turn my cell phone off, call it from my home phone and listen to my vm that way.

This is what I was thinking. Just disable it! Or leave message on it stating that you ONLY RESPOND to text messages.

In my circle of hell it is considered to be rude to ignore voice mail. It is just as rude to wait days to respond. Not sure how this behavior is okay. :confused3
