No better way to combat vaccine hesitancy than to tell the public than pretty much nothing changes once you’re vaccinated.....

In all fairness, I think we all have to follow these precautions until the vaccine is available to everyone, but once we hit that point..... I 100% agree. And they could be saying that now. Wear your mask and distance for now. Let's give everyone a chance. Then we'll adjust guidelines. But that's not what they're saying. And I'll be shocked if they do.

I've been saying all along they've been messaging this wrong. And they just keep doing so.

I agree to a point. I'd love it if we were more like Israel and used vaccines as a carrot to events like concerts....etc. But you know...rights and all here. So the CDC is being cautious right now. The CDC screwed up so much at the beginning of this whole thing with the testing debacle, I think it's smart to be cautious right now. Cases are rising in many states.

I think the CDC wanted to say the right things in the beginning, but could not.

It will be too late by the time they change the messaging and many will have move on and stay moved on with out getting it. The bigger issue is how many have lost all faith in the CDC and other groups that if something of bigger danger comes around they will laugh at them and ignore it.

I am glad we aren't like Israel though.

Well...I think you are right once we got into the summer. They were muzzled politically....no doubt. I'm referring to the bad test that they put out in the beginning. It was a huge, huge mistake and really hurt us from the jump. This clip...from a BBC special called..."54 days: The Pandemic in America". The woman in the clip, Jennifer Rakeman PhD....is an in-law of my sister. We see her at family BBQs....etc. Insanely smart. Anyway....what she's saying....is what I'm talking about. Public health departments knew very early that we were well.....I'd use another word normally.....but I'll just say....screwed.

The CDC is quite literally the worst thing that has happened to the vaccine in America. Overall, we're doing quite well, but we will hit a brick wall soon and that wall was in part built by the CDC's insane underselling of the vax.

Sigh...I'm referring to their vaccine roll-out and how it's centralized and controlled. Life us much more normal in Israel overall than it is here...by far. Here we have millions of people on the worst kind of scavenger hunt ever....the hunt for a vaccine. It's insane. I haven't lost faith in the CDC....they're allowed to speak now, and they're being cautious given our ad hoc/"best of luck to you" healthcare system.

You literally can't go one day without hearing someone from the CDC, NIH or the government overall quite openly begging people to get vaccinated. There's a lot of fear mongering in other media outlets that is keeping a whole lot of people from getting vaccinated. It's all over social media. And we all know where it's coming from. I'm no so sure that a lot of those followers are going to run out and get a vaccine because the CDC tells them they can go to a Nascar race maskless if they do so. A lot of these people don't even believe that the virus is real. The CDC didn't put that message out. So much damage has been done to the credibility of these scientific institutions....that it will be very difficult to turn that around. The CDC made mistakes with testing early on...and other mistakes for sure, for one having a leader who was almost totally silenced. But underselling the vaccine is not one of them.

What hasn't been really addressed is how they are going to address the homeless populations and low income/poverty areas, because bottom line neither of those groups are going to be fighting for slots. The good news is there is a good chance alot oft hem have had covid whether they knew it or not since they are also groups less likely to get tested.
At least here, they’re taking J&J out into the community to try to administer to our homeless population. Or will again, when we get more. I don’t know all the intricacies, but it something that’s being addressed at the state level with a vaccine equity matrix (those communities have extra reserve) and at a county level.

But you’re right, that’s going to be hard.

J&J would be perfect for the homeless community. The states should set up pop up sites in areas that have large homeless communities. Using the two dose vaccines would be problematic, especially among the transient population.

Did you have any luck with rescheduling your vaccine appointment?

South Florida Residents: What website(s) did you use to get an appointment for the vaccine? DS is eligible now. DH & I should be on Monday. I've checked every site I know of. None of them have open appointments. I want to make sure I'm not missing any.

No. After being on hold an hour again, I gave up. And ultimately decided that maybe it’s best that DH and I don’t get them on the same day, in case either of us have any side effects. Especially with our kids going back to in person school and dance (and needing rides). So he goes Monday and I go Thursday. Considering I thought I would be last, I’ll take it!

I agree. It's so irritating. People are chomping at the bit to get back to a normal life, and instead of playing that up, they are basically saying, "get vaccinated so you can continue to live like you are in lockdown." People want to travel, visit relatives, go to parties and concerts etc. Not just gather in small groups with other vaccinated people. It's like saying, "come to this amazing buffet with steak and lobster and endless food.......but you can only have soup."

Actually that has been addressed and already being worked on in different places. And I don't think it's respectful IMO to frame it like individuals who belong in that group aren't fighting for a vaccine just by virtue of being homeless or being low income or in poverty. Means and access often are the largest roadblocks. Think how difficult it's been for people in homes to get vaccines hunting like it's the most coveted FP and imagine how hard that would be if you had no consistent place to live or you lack the funds for internet or you're working 3 jobs just to scrape by and you're barely doing it.

Each state has different populations with their own unique things they need to keep in mind. There was a poster on one of the other threads absolutely disgusted that homeless people were even included in priority in CA but thankfully someone thought they were human beings worthy of a vaccine.

In my state homeless people and those in shelters were accounted for from the beginning in terms of phases (included in Phase 2/5). In my area vaccine efforts have already been underway for several weeks for homeless, homebound, shelters (which includes domestic violence shelters/safe houses) with multiple entities partnering up for that and those with intellectual disabilities. The county above me has a high minority and is often the poorest county in the state. That county started with high risk contact workers (using Pfizer or Moderna) before 65+ because that's their community and where their outbreaks were occurring; they've since moved onto 65+ and now have walk-ups/no appointment needed for 65+. In the state next to me but still in my metro there's been mobile vaccine units sent to poorer zip codes although disparity between whites and non-whites exists (which is pretty much all over in the U.S. unfortunately my state included). The other side of the state line though for months there's been a fierce battle with the mayor on getting homeless people more rights and considerations (which has a higher homeless population than my area). One of the people I knew growing up is an activist (ETA: corrected word) now and so he does plenty of updates on FB about it. But they are trying.

The FEMA sites are doing walk ups. I’ve heard people having lots of luck on Publix and CVS websites. I used patientportalfl.com to schedule my appointment for Orange County (I live in Manatee so it was two hour drive).

Thanks. I'll look into FEMA sites & check patientportalfl. Publix & CVS appear to have appointments in other areas, but not South Florida. Broward, Palm Beach & Miami Dade Counties aren't even an option on the Publix site. I'll keep stalking Winn-Dixie, CVS & Walgreens.

I think this is a matter of perspective. When we're vaccinated, we'll continue to wear a mask, until everyone has the opportunity to get one. Things will change for us though. We will be able to go into a packed Publix or go to a baseball game without worrying about getting Covid. Right now, going to Publix is a nightmare. I couldn't get out of there fast enough last night.

At the same time Australia has had life of normalcy with packed maskless crowded events (I had mentioned on another thread boy the media storm would have been way different had a super spreader event occurred but still). On the other hand AU often goes on lockdown of millions of their citizens for a handful of cases (truly a handful). They seem to be doing okay with that method but we know that wouldn't be favorable here in the U.S. and it doesn't have as much to do about rights as one could portray it to be.

But a centralized method (for Israel) is a lot easier when your population is the amount of my state and the state next to me combined and is less than 9,000 square miles when my state alone is over 82,000 square miles. That's not to say some large country with a large population couldn't succeed just like Israel I just try to keep it in perspective (much like I have with NZ and AU and the efforts and methods they've used).

Many states are experiencing rising cases. They said it could be a combo of dropping restrictions too early, and variants spreading faster. I am getting a little uneasy, but am hoping the vaccination efforts will help control this.

Broward, Miami dads, and palm beach are options on Publix. I’m looking at them right now. To book appointments in the populous counties you need to be online at exactly 7am. If you don’t mind driving some counties are still open.

We do have pockets of antivaxxers throughout the US, so I expect some areas to have low turn out with people getting vaccinated. We'll know more as the age drops. I get older people getting it as they're more likely to die from it. I wonder if we'll start seeing push back from younger folks who aren't afraid of dying from it.

A girl who works at the salon I go to told me she isn't getting it. She is mid 20s, probably. When I asked her why not, she said "because they say it can affect fertility and I want to have kids someday." I tried to tell her that wasn't really a concern and that she had gotten some inaccurate information and I urged her to speak to her doctor and reconsider. She then doubled down, saying "well, I'm not really worried about getting Covid anyway. I'd be fine, cause I'm young and healthy."

At that point, I just smiled and said "Yeah, I get that." I didn't want to ruffle any feathers, because I genuinely like this salon!
