CDC Notifies States, Large Cities To Prepare For Vaccine Distribution As Soon As Late October

I'm feeling okay a day after getting my first dose of Pfizer. I'm just happy I was able to get vaccinated.

On Friday, Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings wrote to the state requesting permission to expand eligibility to law enforcement, corrections, and firefighters of any age. On Monday, the state granted his request. I did not know about this until my mom texted me an article on Tuesday night. I got excited, logged into the website, and managed to get an appointment the next day. The only site that was approved for the expanded criteria was the Orange County Convention Center, which is next to Universal Studios. I left my house at 8:15 and got there at 10:30. Got my shot and was back home around 2 thanks to Spring Break I-4 traffic.

The expanded criteria is for all law enforcement, corrections, and firefighter staff, not just sworn officers. If that applies to you, log into patientportalfl.com and schedule an appointment.

So, Biden has modified his July 4th statement to clarify we may NOT be ready for small family gatherings...I just...I dunno.

he may be hedging because cases have stopped dropping in 15 states....they’re increasing. Positivity rate is up in 19 states. Read tHis thread. It is not all negative.... just calling for faster vaccinations and suggesting it’s too early to be opening up as we are in many states...most states at this point. He’s saying just a few weeks could make a difference.

That’s all fair and reasonable in a world where we don’t have vaccines. But we do.

It's even more unfortunate that the President of the United States thinks he has the authority to do so. Grown adults have the right to make decisions on whom they want to associate with, what businesses they want to patronize and what risks they are willing to accept. My risk tolerance may be greater than yours, it may be less than yours, as adults we both should be able to make that choice for ourselves.

He doesn't have the authority to do what you're saying.....same as the last guy didn't when he said he wanted the church pews full last Easter. Everybody knows this, but some want to pretend that they're being sent to their room without their supper....or in this case their July 4th hot dog. If you want to have a 4th of July BBQ....you should do so. If I'm vaccinated and my family is vaccinated....I'll have a Memorial Day BBQ if we're all good by then.

Leaders speak in generalizations because they have to think of the greater good. If the current guy in charge said that we should all be in the pews for Easter services....I wouldn't go....because I won't be protected by then. He didn't say that though, because he's leading in a way where he's thinking of health of the nation.

I think it's kind of dramatic to make it seem like this "4th of July BBQ thing" is law or something akin to that. But it's important to be cautious....like at least some leaders in public health were last year when they pleaded with us all not to get together for Thanksgiving and Christmas. A lot of Americans didn't heed that sage advice....and we all saw what happened in early January with respect to cases and deaths.

Thankfully we're not in that same place now.

He brought up vaccines....several times. He's just saying....we're plateauing. Some states are going up with respect to cases and positivity rate. Let's let vaccines really kick in for another few *weeks*....before we start opening up. It's really not a big ask....at all. Here in the Northeast they're not sure what is up....but we're stalled for sure. Especially up here in seems silly to rush to open for the next month or so....just get more vaccines in arms. That will likely knock us out of our plateau and we'll see cases go down again.

Absolutely agreed. And for the record, I’m still referencing Biden’s July 4th comment here. I’m not looking to be okay with small family gatherings. I’m looking to be okay for parades and fireworks.

Are we plateauing or reaching the bottom of the curve where the rate of going down slows down? The US 7 day average is still decreasing right?

I think we're going to see parades and fireworks.....even here in NJ. In NYC...maybe not, our greatest city (imo anyway)....will be the last to recover. I just read in the Journal the other day that NYC has just *15%* of commuters back in those massive skyscraper office buildings. Read another Journal article about suburban "Zoom Towns'. That is totally my town...and surrounding towns. With my business....we go to people's homes to walk their dogs (only 1/2 of our staff these days...and none of us is as busy as we were in 2019).....and at almost every home, the entire family is home....all working or going to school. We don't have the normal "school bus traffic" in the morning and afternoons, but we have a newer level of heavier traffic from like 10-4pm as people who work from home are just out and about doing errands, picking up lunch...etc. It's a whole different kind of town now.

I can’t help noticing that some of the folks here most concerned about when they might be able to get vaccinated are now getting vaccinated.
Let's try to keep this thread about information not egos :)

It's a joyous occasion when anyone can get vaccinated. I don't care when how or other specifics, just that they were able to get it :) :)

It appears the country is plateauing. March 17th cases: 62.794. March 10th cases: 61.415.

This is not unexpected.....we're racing against the clock now....vaccines vs. cases. The good news is that the our target population....older folks, and especially nursing home patients are really hitting good numbers with respect to vaccines. Our death count has plummeted. But it's important now, as we move into the younger population....that we really encourage everyone to get vaccinated to prevent a new nasty variant from popping up that could evade vaccines that we currently have in circulation.

Not at all about egos!!! Okay MOSTLY not about egos!!

seriously, my point is we have direct evidence from the folks here that this is happening much quicker than people think or fear it is.

Definitely....I'm hearing of more and more people getting their shot. I called my State Senator's office yesterday to see about volunteering to be a vaccinator. Got a voicemail, then a call back from what sounded like a very young aide...seriously, his voice was cracking like my 13 year old nephew's does ;). But he was kind enough to let me know that Senator Gopal has been told that a lot of J&J is coming our way. I know this Senator has set up many events to vaccinate seniors in my area and so I'd like to help. The young man took my info and said they'd call when they need me. He said I'd have to be vaccinated first and asked if I'd take the J&J vaccine in order to volunteer....and I said yes. :). Hope to hear from them soon.

So I did a little math. Summer starts on June 20th. That's 94 days away. At 2.5 million shots per day (which could be low), that's 235,000,000 shots. Now the math gets tough here, because some of those are the same folks getting two, but some are JNJ. But no matter how those numbers break down, it's at least 150,000,000 MORE people getting at least one shot that haven't gotten one yet. That would be 224,000,000 vaccinated adults in the US. That's virtually everyone in this country over 16 years old.

The only hiccup I can see to that is you run out of people who wish to be vaccinated. Which I'm sorry to say is on them, not on the people who've chosen to get the shot.

Well, I hit the St. Patty's Day luck! I had put my name on the list at my PCP for when they get to vaccinating the general population, since that's when I'm eligible. I figured I'd put my name down and basically forget about it until May. But today I got a call that my Dr. got a shipment of vaccine, they're having a clinic this weekend, and there weren't enough names on the list of "eligible" people, so they're taking people from the group 5 list to fill the extra slots. And they've already scheduled the 2nd shot for me, too. Wooee!

I wouldn't call it a true plateau yet either. 7 day moving average is still slowly going down. The closer to zero you get the harder it will be. But deaths are really dropping still and hospitalizations steadily going down.

I just want people to feel comfortable sharing when they can get vaccinated or if they have been vaccinated :flower3::flower3::flower3:

Some people getting vaccinated and the actual people who expressed concerned getting vaccinated are not the same. But even if it were it doesn't make their prior thoughts or fears incorrect. How many times has things changed from having enough supply to April to it being May to "we hope to have everyone by July"? Which were different ways of talking about expected supply.

Everywhere is doing it differently and getting different amounts of supply and different types. Getting a lot of J&J can certainly speed up the process of people being able to get it since they are considered fully vaccinated after just one dose, getting less of it or having to go weeks without getting more can slow it down. Plus someone may be able to be vaccinated but a loved one to them still isn't which can still weigh on their minds.

I know you were probably trying to be more comforting than anything. Just hoped we could extend our good vibes and happiness to people without adding a mix of "I told you so" undercurrent in there (which I admit I could have been reading something that wasn't there just came off that way to me). :flower1::flower1:
