So I guess they are aiming to vaccinate adults first, before kids? It sounds like he wants it mandatory but I don't know what law is in place to make it so.

They said their goal was to vaccinate the 5.7 million adults in NJ within 6 months of the first shipment. They didn't mention kids, but that's how it sounded to me.

This is where I wonder what the definition of “kids” will be. You’re an adult when you’re 18 but you can start taking adult meds when you’re 12. You get adults boosters at 13. I feel like I read somewhere age 14 and up but I couldn’t tell you where.

They didn't say, but I'm sure more of this will become apparent as we get closer to that first shipment. Murphy did say they'd be discussing vaccines again on Monday. I haven't been listening to every Covid press conference lately for my state. Well, I have more since cases have started to soar....but I'll dial in more now that there's vital information coming on vaccines.

How is requiring a Covid19 vaccine any different than requiring a full suite of vaccines for a child to go to school? They require about 16 shots, at least. I'm not saying I agree with it necessarily, just interpreting what I am reading and hearing in the mainstream news.

Also, Ticketmaster has appeared to back pedaled on the mandatory vaccine idea for now. https://news.yahoo.com/no-ticketmaster-wont-force-covid-145331418.html

Enrolling a child in school is a fixed event, where you're sharing that information with one organization at a single point in time. I think there's a huge difference, both logistically and in principle, between that and requiring you to flash some sort of vaccine credential here, there and everywhere in the course of day to day life. And school vaccination rules, in most states, have broad exemptions that make them far from universal anyway.

it wouldn’t be here there and everywhere. Want to work from the office instead of home? Vaccine proof. Cruise ship? Vaccine proof. That kind of thing.

Just like having your temp taken now to enter WDW, in the future they'll scan the health pass on your phone. This isn't my idea. I've heard experts talk about it.

The antivaxxers will prevent that from happening. You know they want their freedom to infect and infect others.

I'm not a cruiser, but I don't see how that industry re-starts until there's widespread immunity. I would think you'll need a vaccine before boarding a ship.

Well, maybe, but if a cruise line decides you need a vaccine to board their ship, I'd guess they'd have a right to refuse one from boarding. School is one thing, but private enterprise is another matter I'd think.

The previous conversation talked about concerts, sporting events, shopping, etc. That's what I was referring to - having to provide proof of vaccination for ordinary but not habitual interactions.

I absolutely think the cruise industry is likely to implement such a policy, just as I think vaccination is likely to be required for international travel. There is already an expectation that some special health-related rules can apply in those settings, and it makes sense that that expectation would be changed to include covid. I don't think we'll see many, if any, domestic events or spaces imposing similar rules.

Yup, I was e-mailing today with our travel agent for a trip to South Africa. She lives in SA. We were supposed to take the trip in May, it was cancelled (obviously), but we rescheduled for August of 2021...as far as we could push it out. She has a family member in the South African government, and they are getting ready to implement the vaccine rule as soon it becomes widely available. She emailed to let me know that we should make sure we get some kind of documentation when we do get the vaccine, hopefully getting both doses by July so that we'll be able to take the trip. South Africa did just open their borders again to international travelers because tourism is a huge part of their economy, but she said that they are getting very few bookings. A vaccine is the only thing that gets us back to normal.

I think anyone who volunteered should get it first as well. It's thanks to the volunteers that we have a light at the end of the tunnel. Did you find out if you got the vaccine already or the placebo?
Not yet. But it will have to be soon. Once a vaccine is approved, they have to allow us to take it.

Kids can’t get it yet since it wasn’t studied on them.

Yeah there isn't data on effects to children so while they are included in vaccine distribution plans at the high level overview (as in what order they might fall under) realistically they wouldn't qualify until research has been done on possible impacts to them both on efficacy and on side effects.

I totally agree. But good science doesn't assume. It proves. Don't shoot the messenger. If I can find a transcript of the NPR interview, I'll post it. Today is my crazy day at work though, so not much time for internet searches.
Completely late here, but I read that same article yesterday. I can’t find it today though

Agree or disagree: when enough people worldwide get one of these two (or three or more) vaccines, then Covid is effectively over.
Dr. Fauci said a vaccine will get us out of the pandemic, but that no, it will not get rid of Covid.

Here is what I heard on the radio. FDA should approve at least one of the vaccines by the end of the year. Distribution will take 8 weeks. And it takes 6 week before it starts being effective after you take it. That pretty much means I need to plan my vacations for the last half of 2021.

It doesn’t take six weeks to become effective. It takes about a month to reach full effectiveness after the second shot. That doesn’t mean you have zero protection leading up to that.

I read this morning that the F.D.A expects to take three weeks to review the application from Pfizer, and will then hand it off to an outside panel of experts who reviews the application again. That panel has scheduled a meeting for December 10th. Based on those dates, and conversations that Pfizer is now having with states, officials are expecting to get the first shipment of vaccines around the third week of December. I just heard the head of the Dept. of Health for Illinois say they expect to get about 400K doses by the end of the year. NJ is slated to get 260K doses. Illinois is about 50% larger by population than NJ, so lines up perfectly with those numbers.

And as I've said earlier, the first group will be "protected" from the virus one week post second injection, so that's about one month later. If all goes well, it's a safe bet that all frontline healthcare workers, first responders and even nursing home patients can be possibly be vaccinated by the end of January, early February. Especially when the Moderna vaccine comes into play.

Make no mistake though, we are going to have an *awful* December and likely a pretty awful January as well. But I really am starting to believe that by the spring, things are going to vastly improve.
