You are the reason I think I need to move to the Eastern area! I agree with everything you said from the laissez faire approach in the beginning to the incredible job I think our governor and Dr Levine are doing. Also- I love love love Dr Levine. She was my security blanket at the beginning of all of this and I look forward to her briefings!
Did you love when Dr. Levine moved her mother out of a long term care facility knowing that Covid positive patients were going to be returned to those facilities?

I think Tom Frieden, former C.D.C director has said this.....that we didn't need to lock down the whole country for a month in March/April, but just certain areas. And I agree, I think that set us up to really politicize this thing. You had blue states and blue cities getting hit incredibly hard early on, and so it took on that "city vs. rural/red vs. blue" kind of feel, and it just went from there. And then masks were politicized...on and on, to the point where there are literally millions of people who think this whole thing is a hoax.

Totally agree. When I talk to people here, Covid always comes up, and the vaccine is the biggest topic. The majority of people I know (75%) won’t get a vaccine for reasons such as: it’s a hoax, they want to inject you with a microchip, it will actually make you sick so the hospitals can get more money. I wish I were joking. They won’t even wear a mask, so I’m not surprised. It’s very different in a rural area than it is in a suburb or large city.

It’s my understanding that her mother asked to be moved. But, if my mother was in a long term care facility and I knew that may happen, I would have done the same. She had the money, resources and the right to do so. 🤷‍♀️

I wonder if residents unrelated to Dr. Levine were even aware of the Covid patients moving back in, or what that meant for them.

I think everyone knew that SARS-CoV-2 people were going to be returned, those facilities are their home, you can't throw people out of their homes for being sick. I don't think Dr. Levine was using privileged info to make that decision, if this is the suggestion, I know a lot of people who did the same thing. Honestly, those facilities have always been very dangerous - Flu tears through all the time. In Massachusetts there was a terrible outbreak very early at a veterans home in Holyoke :( this was all over the news if people were paying attention, my cousin scooped her mom from her house and another friend moved to get her dad into a safer region.

Would you not have moved your own mother if you were in her shoes?
If I had the information available to me that Dr. Levine had. Sure. But this was very early days. I don't think the general public knew yet what a death sentence this was for old people. Or that they were moving positive patients back in.

Fair enough! Since the beginning of October, approximately 60 deaths per week in the 25-44 year old age group nationwide. And again, no mention of comorbidities there, but according to the below study from Stanford University, "deaths for people <65 years without underlying predisposing conditions are remarkably uncommon." Statistically, somewhere between .7% and 3.6% of the deaths in this group have no comorbidities (that can be found in table 4 on page 6).

All I know, and I havent seen data to support my theory, is that all the young people I keep reading about lately were obese. Yesterday the sad story of the 5 year old who lost both parents,, very young, both obese. In chicago young guy died and was morbidly obese and in the article his sister was quoted as saying something along the line, " he seemed healthy, but he hadnt been to the Dr is years as he had no health insurance".. Most likely type 2 too Granted there are the outliers,, and even a healthy 60 years old dying is IMO also too "young".. So for me mentally, the really young, teens like my kids, i have mentally taken out the idea they can die from Covid... I know there is a .0000 whatever% chance they could, but not enough to occupy my thought.. My son, age 15, is more likely to die mountain biking.. Now my mom and my DH,, that is a different story... I hope they get a vaccine sooner than later.

I dont know the backstory, but my SIL just moved her DH out of in home care back home and they had zero cases.. She didnt want to deal with visitation restrictions.
It’s my understanding that her mother asked to be moved. But, if my mother was in a long term care facility and I knew that may happen, I would have done the same. She had the money, resources and the right to do so. 🤷‍♀️

Keep in mind, a vaccine for only 25 million at the start will also coincide with surges happening right now.. Which means on a positive note, the numbers of vaccinated AND the numbers of those Covid recovered (antibodies) will help in a small way in starting some form or herd immunity. Do the math,, 12 million already in the US and over 100 thousand a day new.... By time the vaccine comes out 10% of the US might already have antibodies... add this to another 10% in the first batch...

Does anyone know these answers:
1. Have they figured out how long the vaccine protection lasts?
2. If you had Covid... do you still get the shot? or wait for those witih no antibodies first? Curious how that works... I am mean if I were covid postiive, I would be want to know what the vaccine means specifically for me..

I have been be bit frustrated on reading many online comments elsewhere on how people are downright refusing to get the shot for this reason " it takes decades to make a vaccine, I am not getting one rushed".... I wish they would learn more about biontech.... they have been working for 10 years on this type of vaccine technology... and most are based on other vaccine development SARS/Ebola....

There is tons of stupidy out there. if you are against it, then at least do the research to find a valid reason.

I am a masters prepared RN and I just can't get over this mentality. Its a hot mess out there right now and I would climb over people for a vaccine for me and my family. Id give a kidney for one. I don't currently work (home with my kids) but am considering going back to work so that I can GET the vaccine! ARGH what we are seeing is the failure of our education system. The ramifications of low levels of literacy and science aptitude are biting us in the tush right now!

I'm not denying that people have doubted covid is real. I am doubting that all of a sudden out of the blue nurses are popping up out of nowhere claiming that these patients are suddenly telling them this stuff. Where were they in spring?
I actually read the article. It was focusing on patients in South Dakota, so they really didn't have it in the spring. At all. What she was saying is that BEFORE intubation they were saying this stuff. And that at least when they got tubed they couldn't spew this hate towards the staff. But literally they were using their last breaths (independent) to deny COVID. Some were saying they had lung cancer. Literally they would rather have LUNG CANCER than admit they had COVID. Pathetic.

My partner had a patient last week who said Covid was a hoax made up to influence the election. When my partner countered that the election was over, the patient replied that it was still contested, so was still being used as a hoax. You can not reason someone out of a position they did not achieve with reason to begin with.

I'm thrilled the vaccine data looks so good. I never doubted it would happen, just that they'd be distributing by end of October. I'll be first in line to get it when able, which will hopefully be soon since I'm in health care.

I felt it was very well covered & not to put too fine a point on it but as these regions became overwhelmed and we all read about straining bed supply where else did people think they were going to go? Where do people think they are going to go now?

No room is no room, if people have a loved one in a facility now is the time to figure out a plan when there is an outbreak and be ready to move as soon as the resident says they are hearing coughs and ambulances. Noone wants an outbreak but they are going to happen because the populations are vulnerable and this surge is already underway.

The vaccinations in play will be wonderful for January on but can't help anyone now, right now it's all about creating safe bubbles and protecting people with safe bubbles of some kind. No matter what the Dr's have to help us if there aren't enough healthcare workers or beds free there is nothing to be done, the best strategy is to not get sick because if you do you are on your own.

I think we're getting a bit too political here and it may be skirting a bit on the DIS rules. Framing things (and I'm not just speaking about your stuff it's all over) as this party vs that party I think that is actually politicizing things even more or at least make things an either/or when we know people are so much more than just that. I myself don't want to break DIS rules here so I'll just leave it at that.

I had a patient devastated when I said they only needed glasses and didn't have macular degeneration. WTH?!! I tell all the doctors in training I interact with that a good chunk of any medical profession is psychiatry. You can't divorce their body from their beliefs, as irrational as it can be.

Meanwhile, at least in New York, the Javits Center and Comfort ship sat empty.

I agree with this. It’s a good thread with lots of updated info. I’d hate to see it shut down.

I detest the politics in all of this. Yes, I really can believe that COVID is real, I want to be among the first to get the vaccine AND I believe whole-heartedly that schools and most businesses can and should be open right now with safety measures in place, regardless of what the data is showing. There are those at both ends of the spectrum that are aghast at even the suggestion of that however. Unfortunately, that has resulted in both states being open with almost no restrictions, simultaneously with states being locked down tight-as-a-drum. Neither approach is doing us any good. Will vaccine distribution also be politicized? At least in CA, It seems like it is already happening.

Well, I guess the good news about the first two vaccines is that they are apparently so effective that it gives us a bit of a cushion with respect to how much of the population gets it. Honestly, I think it should be like the MMR vaccine that is required before your kids can go to school. And I would expect that you're going to have to show proof of vaccine in order to travel in the future. DH and I had a big trip to Africa planned for last May, and in fact, we just made the appointment with our doctor for the vaccines that we needed to make the trip. We needed to show proof of the necessary vaccines in order to enter the country. And so, I really think that's where this is headed.

I think people will begin to waffle a bit on their anti-vaccine stance when they can't safely rejoin society. I have read that once we get the vaccine, that masks will still need to be a part of our lives for awhile. This is because the vaccinated can still carry the virus in our nasal passages, and potentially pass it to others, essentially as a carrier. And so if the non-vaccinated go to large indoor sporting events, or concerts or other settings like that, they risk becoming infected. Maybe some of them just need more time. I for one can't wait to get a semblance of my 2019 life back.
