CBS Report on Disney

I just watched the CBS exposee on Disney restaurants and was underwhelmed by the whole report. It aired at about 11:02 pm which I thought was odd. I mean it preempted Kerry & Clarks pres bid, Martha Stewart's court testimny, and other major news stories. This smacked to me of CBS trying to get a ratings bump duuring feb sweeps and of course more importantly a swipe at Disney owned ABC . The report talks bout "major" violations but is very unspecific. By their own report in 2003 only 8 people complained of food borne illness. EXCUSE ME?? only 8 when Disney serves how many millions of people/meals??? Thats a pretty impressive record. And when someone did complain and health inspectors investigated no violations were substaniated but they noted some other violation . Generally these violations were for food tempature problems. They were very dramatic and used Disney commercials to try and scare you or add dramatic effect. I thought it came off pardon the pun as "cheesey" They also made a big deal because one person who complained didn't want to go on camara and Disney paid them and signed a confidentiality agreement. The Disney spokesperson said the agreement was to protect both sides. Part 2 is tomarrow where allegedly they are going to expose some restaurant in Epcot where someone claims they saw a rat . Overall I think CBS came off as very amaturish and the report filled with undefined allegations. I'm sure the website will have the story.

I agree, I thought CBS came off really pathetic, talk about grasping at straws!

This is the link to the story on the web site:

I too think CBS is jealous of ABC, when you serve over 100,000 Million meals in 2003 and only eight(8) complaints get lodged..... I think I have a better chance at winning the lottery!

They should do a report about all the restaurants in NYC, cause the violations their would be much more than warm food! (But I still eat in NYC too!!)

It's sad what the media will do just to create a "story" :(

And not for nothing..........I work in a business where we investigate these types of complaints........................

The first thing we look at, when there is a complaint, is whether or not there were more people, who ate at the same restaurant, with similar complaints, and if you find multiple people with the same type of problems (symptoms), then you've got A PROBLEM.....because this would be a problem with the storage, preparation, and/or contamination of the food.............but not when it is one person making a complaint......When its only one person complaining about a particular thing, then you are dealing with something that is 99% of the time, not related to the "dinner you just ate"....................

Now if we're talking about 8 complaints out of millions served........that's RIDICULOUS.......................

:hyper: :hyper: :hyper: <---------CBS executive say, "Yeah, Yeah, RUN THE STORY"..............

I don't believe this was a CBS story -- just something put together by your LOCAL station's news department.

Yes, you are correct.................the LOCAL (NY) CBS affiliate..........

I also saw the report locally here in Philly last night. I agree.....8 people is hardly a major problem. There was the one situation where a group of 10 or so staying at the BCV claim to all have gotten sick at the Cape May Cafe "clam bake". If it were indeed the clams, you would have thought a whole lot more people (not just this one isolated party) would have complained of illness. There was one valid (with supporting evidense) claim by a doctor who contracted salmonella while dining at the Coral Reef. This was determined via lab tests and salmonella is known to hit fast and hard. But still....I feel anyone can get food poisoning anywhere and Disney doesn't seem to have any major track records for this.

I'm afraid that was a mouse, not a rat! :earsboy: :teeth:

I agree with all of you that it was pretty pathetic if this was all they found. I wasn't able to find the program on Houston CBS and watched the news looking for it.

Rats are part of the food industry as gross as that sounds and as long as the areas are baiting for them and protecting all of the food products being cooked and served; there's not alot else they can do. I would expect that there would be some rodents being in the area it is.....

Maybe it's their jab at ABC, a Disney-owned company?

My two cents...

We waited up to watch the story from the Philly station. To say the least I thought it was lame! It was reported that 100 million meals were served last year with 8 complaints.

I was a little worried about watching the segment. We're going for 3 weeks in April and I've made my ps's. Guess what. I am not worried at all.

I agree. The odds that this particular rat did anything to the protected food or was carrying some plaguelike illness are pretty small.

This may gross out some anti rat people but I used to have a pet rat. Her names was Babs and she was a little white lab rat I rescued from being snake food. She was a lab rat; not a wild one, but she was not tame and living in a disgusting cage with other feeder rats that make the NYC subway system look like a 5 star restaraunt! The poor little thing just looked at me with her constant dumb confused look and pink little twicthy nose as if to say ...please save me ....please....

She was quite possibly the sweetest pet I ever had. Well, when I got my dog, I moved Babs' cage into my kitchen which was the only place where the dog could not eat her.

I continued to make my meals in this kicthen, less than 10 ft from her cage.

No one who ever ate at my house got sick. Ever.

Sometimes, rats and mice go into buildings where they smell food and stay there to stay out of the elements. They aren't stupid. Even if they can't get at the food, if its warm and dry , they'll stay there. If a restraunt has one rat in it, one day, I don't see the big deal. It's one thing if the rat is digging through the food and then they serve it to people, but if the rat just scurries through the building, not much you can do.

Sheri

PS . Babs passed away in late 2003 of natural causes. :(

I watched it too last night. I thought 8 cases out of 100 million was pretty good but those were just the reported ones. I have gotten sick from some restaurants around here and never reported it. Anyhow, even though the violations were for improper temperatures that still is a big thing. People can get sick from that. We have ressies at the Castle and at the Clam bake and I am not worried about getting sick. I know in there is website to see the health code violations for NYC restaurants, is there one for Orlando or Florida?

I think this happened back in '99. We were eating at Cape May (b/fast, I think). As I was getting my food, this chef guy kept coming out sticking thermometers in the various warming dishes and taking lots of food samples. He wasn't a talkative sort, but I tried to strike up a conversation about what he was doing. He was doing routine, periodic testing to be sure nothing was growing in the food. I thought that was kinda neat to see him at work.

Of course, my 1st thought was, "Should I be worried over this?" But figured that if there was a problem (and this wasn't routine testing), that they wouldn't be doing it in the open where everyone could see, and would most likely be chasing us all out of the place.

8 cases out of 100 million meals served? I like those odds. I will be more confident then ever eating at any WDW restaurant.....except Alfredo's.

This is just another instance of the pre-packaged crap that passes for "local" news. It just didn't air in NY last night, but in Philly and some other places too I think. Yet they actually called it a Channel 2 EXCLUSIVE! Did you notice the official from Tallahasee didn't mention WDW once, but was just talking in general terms about food safety. And they pasted in a shot of that local anchor nodding. Believe me , they never even met, and he had no idea his words were being used about a Disney World story. It was a NON story.

We had to watch just to satisfy our curiousity. I should have known better. Who else hates local news as much as me?

Just another reason to buy the New York Times.

By the way, we were just there and ate, and ate, and ate, and ate..............
