Hi all,

I posted this on resorts but figured I'd get more opinions here from people who are not currently planning trips. :)

What is there to do at AKL for adults traveling without kids? I mean heck, we'd do the bead necklace making and cookie decorating if they'd let us :teeth: but I think those activities are really more for the small children. ;)

Chris was very sad when I told him the pirate cruise at GF was really just for people under age 12 (really, his face fell, it was so sad). So, in order to avoid sadness like this again, can someone tell me, are these things I hear about like stories at the firepit, Hidden Mickey hunt etc. for adults too? What else is there?

If you are a Concierge guest, I think they still have that Sunrise Safari tour?

That's the first thing that leaps to mind.:)

My sister and I did the Culinary Tour without kids (in fact, there weren't any kids on the tour). It was wonderful. They take you to Boma and Jiko, explain the cooking processes they use, and give you samples!! :mickeybar

That sounds very yummy. :) I think we will definately do that. Do you know if it takes place every day?

I have to say that I love AKL! When I was there... I loved the storytelling by the firepit, watching the animals on the balcony, the culinary tour and just hanging around the pool. I also thought the hidden Mickey search was fun too  even though I know that's more for kids.

If you get bored of hanging around the hotel, you're never really more than a 15-20 minute bus ride away from the parks or DTD.

Sherri,

The AKL was wonderful. Granted we did take our then 2.5 year old, however I loved that hotel and would go back in a heartbeat. It was dark however I had no problem with the decor, in fact, it seemed romantic. The pool is beautiful and there are so many nice places (like the Victoria Falls lounge and lobby) to just relax, talk and people watch.
We didn't do the cookie decorating, and we loved Boma.

I know one person's treasure is not necessairialy another person's treasure, however this resort is worth a stay. Go for it, you won't be disappointed.

I can't remember if it was every day, but I know when you check in they will give you the schedule for all the activities available and it's on there. If you have time, I'd definitely try it. I tried things I never would have ordered for myself and *loved* them.

Explore the animal overlooks.
Don't forget the night viewing. That was cool, with the night scope

It was very cozy during Hurricane Frances! Lots of performances by the staff. I'm not sure if that goes on when they aren't captives in the hotel.

I just noticed (before you posted this) that you upgraded to a Deluxe when I was looking at your siggie line. I'm so jealous. I would love to stay at AKL. I was at a Value last year, hopefully trying a Mod this year. Maybe a Deluxe will be next? ;)

Have a FABULOUS trip!!! :flower:

Esmereldax,

I took the time and answered on the RESORTS board question. Did you see that? It's the last post, as I seemed to KILL the thread. :guilty:

I explained all about the Culinary Tour. I suggest that.

Thanks Karen. I just saw your post on the resort thread & replied :) I'm definately going to take the culinary tour. :) Your description of it was great!
I have a feeling we're going to spend a lot of time eating at AKL. The food sounds very yummy. ;)

Hi. Yes, we did. We are getting free airfare this time so we decided, since the AP rates were good, we'd go for it. :)

Honestly though, I like all the hotels. :) I'm pretty easy to please. I mostly want to stay at AKL because I love giraffes. I'm such a dork. :earboy2:

I love the atmosphere of AKL. We haven't stayed there but visited and I could just move in. :) Have a wonderful trip!

We were just there last weekend, we brought home a bunch of papers in a folder that we got at check in. I'll have to look through it and see if there is anything that may be helpful to you.

Ok, I found it and I think it may be helpful to you. If you want me to mail it to you, just pm me.

This is the one hotel I would go to just for the hotel and skip the parks. I LOVED it! I don't know much about the organized events but I did the following: swam in the pool at night ( and daytime too ), walked to all the hallway animal look outs, shopped, sat in the lobby, sat in the outside rocking chairs, sat in the second floor rocking chairs, talked to the CM's from Africa, ate at Boma, and just basically STARED and ENJOYED everything! Even the background music.

Know you will have a ball. Sorry about the Pirate cruise - if you have time you could think up a little personal scavenger hunt for him to do. You would have fun planning it. pirate:

I love giraffes as well. I asked DH if we could get a pet giraffe. He said, "I don't think our homeowners assoc. would approve of it." I don't see what the big deal is :confused3 they don't bark like our dog does. You'll have to buy one of the handcarved giraffes in the gift shop, I don't remember how much they are but I love them.

We stayed @ AKL in 2002, it's one of my favorite. We stayed @ the Poly last fall, I prefer AKL. The year we went the kids were 2 & 4, our favorite thing was to put them to bed, sit on our balcony, have a few drinks & watch the animals - I could do that for hours.

Maybe you could upgrade to concierge just for 1 night to do the sunrise safari.

If you love animals, you're going to love AKL!!!

Can you just upgrade to concierge for just one day? Does being in concierge for one day mean you are guaranteed a spot on the Sunrise Safari?

(sorry for all the questions!)
