cats all over our yard

I would be calling someone as well. I do have a cat and he is an indoor/outdoor cat. He however wears a halter and is on a leash when he is outside the back. He doesn't go out the front although when we first had him he did escape. I think he is now afraid to go out the front.
The other thing is that he is only allowed to go in the litter box and not outside. I look after my 3 young grandkids and I have a large wood swing set that has sand under it all so I don't want cat poo in the sand. He will actually come running inside to go to the bathroom and then wants back out.

ugh..I would be trapping those cats and finding a feral cat spay/neuter program! I love cats...we own 5 thanks to irresponsible people not fixing their animals. I never once said, "I think I will go get a cat" nope..they just show up at my house starving and BAM...new cat. :confused3 (thankfully 3 of the cats live with my daughter's in college now so we've only got 2 here).

I guess I'm the oddball here b/c I would love to look out the window and see cats in my yard! We're cat people here. I would not like their bathroom messes in my yard and I guess I would feel bad for them in the winter. But other than that, we like to watch neighborhood cats strolling around our yard- in fact one caught a mouse right near our house( we live near a woods). My indoor cat loves to watch them, too.

But there's a huge difference between watching a few neighborhood cats and what the OP described. My neighbor has a roaming kitty who's an absolute gem. He's always welcome in my yard. OP's neighbor has unleashed an entire colony. That would not be welcome. It's unsanitary and dangerous. Unless she's inoculating them, there's a rabies risk, among other things.

I love cats too...but seriously...a bunch of un neutered cats roaming around just leads to an unhealthy situation for everyone. And just take a look at the shelters and craigslist and you can see just how many unwanted animals there are out there.

We don't. It's not an ideal solution. But I wasn't willing to return a cat that would likely just be put down. We have 3 other cats who are entirely indoor cats. As I said, we believe in keeping cats indoors, but it just wasn't possible in this case.

I think there's a pretty big difference between keeping one cat that goes in and out and setting out a lot of food to attract herds of cats.

I don't see a difference at all- you are letting it out to use your neighbors yards as its toilet. Years ago I had a cat that thought my newly put in flower beds were there to be their new toilet. Every time I would see it out there I would turn on the in ground sprinklers. Then I found an automatic one that you put in the garden and anytime a cat came into the garden it went on and soaked the cat. Took awhile but the cat learned that the garden was not its litter box! That was the only neighbor on the block that would let their cat outside the house and most neighbors did have a big problem with that!

So you think I should put her down then? Or what, take her to the pound and pretend someone will adopt a cat who won't use a box? Or keep her in my house even though she won't use a box? Or perhaps there's an alternative I have missed.

I have one cat who goes outdoors. She has been spayed. She has had her shots. Yeah, that's almost the same as purposely attracting a herd of stray cats who have not been spayed or neutered and never had shots.

Besides, who would have rid my yard of all those moles? ;)

If a dog is out loose, it is impounded. Other on-the-loose domesticated animals, be they rabbits, gerbils, snakes, chickens, or even cats, should all be treated equally.

You took the cat on - keep it in your house and YOU deal with the messes. Nobody's suggesting you do away with it but you're sounding extremely cavalier about any inconvenience it may be causing others. I had an issue very similar to aprilgail's at our former home for years, only without the auto sprinklers to fight back. It was extremely annoying. But hey, as long as your mole problem is being taken care of...:rolleyes1

SO just because you could not train it to use a litter box then it should be all your neighbors problem- smh.
You could have trained her as a kitten to walk on a leash when it was time to go out instead of just letting it outside to be everyone elses problem!!

So you guys would just put her down then?

Moles? Poison peanuts, any Home Depot.

The mole patrol was just a side benefit. I would never put a cat outdoors just to take care of a rodent problem. Animals are family members here. When we take them on, we take them on for the long haul.

Thank you. :goodvibes

We have tried cats on leashes. It just doesn't work.

That puts us back at one alternative. You think we should have put her down?

Don't worry about it. You are taking care of your cat and it really is the only thing you could do. You have her indoors some and outdoors when you have to. I am sure your cat is well taken care of and loved. :goodvibes

Our cats are outside. They never leave our yard. They keep down the mice and the moles. They are healthy and well taken care of and not in danger.

Here cats fall under different rule than dogs. They are predators and don't have to be leashed. Well, actually neither have to be leashed in the exact area I live, but in town dogs do, cats don't. So, OP, it may depend on your area laws as to what you can do.

Talk to your neighbor and let her know its a problem and its getting out of hand. She may feel the same way and just doesn't know what to do.

NO...I think you should keep it IN YOUR OWN HOUSE and pick up it's c**p yourself exactly as I said the first time.

Thank you. She's curled up on her perch in the living room, where she has been all night. She's a sweet, loving cat. She spends most of her time inside, but just goes out for short periods like a dog.

OK then. I'll take that under advisement.

I so agree with the above. I live in a middle class suburb and a few blocks from our house was "the crazy cat lady". The wife of an attorney, she had cats sitting in every window (outside), several on the drive and in the bushes and created a general nuisance to her neighbors. Several attempts were made to get her to reduce her herd but she just wouldn't. Finally the neighbors called the city who sent people to see the situation. It took 2 court orders for her to finally get down to 3 cats. The stench is now gone when you walk in front of her house. This whole story played out in our newspapers.

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 I will never understand why cat owners think it is ok to let them out and have other people deal with their crap and nasty smell their pee leaves behind. If I let my dog out to pee and crap in a neighbors yard I am sure they would not be happy so why should cats not be the same??
