I was talking to someone after Mass today, and I am not the only person who does this. (so I am not crazy)

The Church has changed quite a bit over the years. One big change, is no more bells during the Consecration of the Host. When I was a kid, the Priest would hold up the Host and say "Do this in memory of Me" and the Alter boy would ring the bells.

No more bells, but my brain hears the bells. It is so ingrained in there, I hear the words, and the 'ring-a-ling-a-ling". My friend says he does the same thing.

Some Churches may still ring the bells, but for those that don't, do you still hear them?

We still have the bells, why would they take them away?

Our church stopped for a few years but has started using them again. I think they are important as a reminder that the most important part of the mass is occuring.

My church here in Brooklyn doesn't do the bells either anymore.

We didn't have the bells for a while, but they're back now.

I like them. I remember them from when I was a kid.

I remember this,bt have't heard them since I was 6 years old.

We don't have them in church, and I haven't thought about them in ages. It would be nice to have them again.

Bobbi :)

PS. I don't think today's altar servers are particularly well trained. I'll bet there would be mistakes, galore.

We have not had them in ages, but I still can 'hear them'. I sure do remember ringing them a lot, plus I can still 'hear' the Latin.

I miss those bells, and yes I still hear them in my head.

Mass has changed a lot since I was a kid. I just don't get into singing every prayer and psalm. I am not a biggie on the incense. As a kid I only saw it a funerals, now it comes out in every mass, multiple times. Sometimes, it is so heavy there is a haze of it in the church and people are coughing. I wish they would get a clue.

I think the particulars of the mass are in control of the head priest of the church. We've always had bells about here that I can recall, and yes, incence (which I never saw but at a funeral) to me has a negitive air about it (no pun intended) and "hold thine breath till thee turns blue!" Not a good incentive to get more people to attend mass.

:rotfl: :rotfl2: Yep, that's why I sit in the WAY back corner of the church. We do have a hard core priest. Unfortunately, I am in Baptist country big time and there are only two Catholic churches in town. The other one is about 20 minutes away and not all that different.

Our church still rings the bells :)

WE haven't had bells since I was little :(

i miss them. Other churches around here do have bells.

Maybe it was after Vatican II I'm thinking that we changed. :(

I had always thought growing up it was to wake up anyone who had fallen asleep! :confused3

Goodness - the title of this thread is good enough for a tag!

I'm not a Catholic and know little about Catholicism so forgive me but... why would they stop/not ring the bells?

The main reason for the bells in the first place, was b/c Mass was said in Latin, with the priest facing tha altar. The bells rang when most imopratant part of mass was going on, it was a signal to those who didn't understand latin. I would imagine they have stopped in some churches b/c you can clearly see the priest holding up the Body of Christ.

The Church where we now live hasn't had the bells while we have lived here...over 11 years now. I grew up with them as well but they disappeared when the priests were pushed out by the Bishop. Here they now don't even want you to kneel during the consecration or elevation. I simply can't not kneel. I feel like I am doing something wrong if I stand.

We still have the bells in our parish.

When my DSs were in middle school, they used to be altar servers and I would cringe when it came time to ring the bells. I was always afraid they would do them too early, too late or GASP!!! DROP THEM!

Our parish is not using the bells any more either but I still "hear" them.

I still hear the Latin, too.

Dominus vobiscum.
Et cum spiritu tuo.

Our parish still rings the bells.

We have the bells, but for awhile we didn't. I heard them when we didn't have them. :teeth:
