Is it true that the top of Cinderella's Castle is removable in the event of a hurricane or is this an urban legend? My husband said he saw that somewhere. Just wondering with Frances approaching.......

No, this is one of those urban myths. However, it is true that they have a backup generator for Walt's cryo-tube just in case .....

Okay...I know I am naive where Disney trivia is concerned...but, is Walt in a crypto-tube IN the castle???? Ewwww!!! Is he in the "apartment" he built for his wife?...and, where is she?? I am really creeped out right now!!

Beca - I do believe the Good Doctor was referring to another Disney Urban Legend.....
Don't worry, Uncle Walt is not resting in a Cryotube in the Castle...All is safe. :p

hee hee hee! :teeth: Thanks for a good chuckle! Gotta love those urban legends.

We were in Orlando for hurrican Charley and told that the highest parts of Cinderellas castle where removed so as no dammage occured (couldn't see any damage when we next visited), !!!

Snookhams is right. Part of the castle does come off in case of a hurricane. I have the book "Inside Disney" by Eve Zibart. I ran and got my book and looked it up because I knew I read about this somewhere.

On page 74, she states "Cinderella Castle sums up the Imagineers' bigger-and-better-than-life architectural style (the castle has 10 spires, a Romanesque base, Gothic arches, and Renaissance rococo Bavarian turrets); their pragmatism (the "stone blocks" are made of fiberglass over steel); their obsessive craftsmanship (the five 15-foot mosaic panels in the foyer took a million chips and two years to complete); their whimsy (the "Disney crest" is carved over the great entrance); and their sheer almost childlike brilliance ( the entire five-ton pinnacle of the tower unscrews in case of hurricanes)."

I thought that was pretty cool. And this is a GREAT book for all Disney lovers. I've read it several times. Gives a lot of history and "backstage" info.

That's interesting. I can tell you that even if they "DO" come off they did not take them off 3 weeks ago when Charley came through. I was at MK before the clean up crew began cleaning up post Chalie (I work on Main Street) and the castle was fully intact.

Maybe it was just designed to have the "ability" to unscrew for a hurricane. That's what it sounds like to me from the book. I would imagine that it would be quite an undertaking. Still is a great book though. Thanks for the info LibertyBelle because I actually wondered about that after Charlie after I read this in the book.

And stay safe LibertyBelle!!! I'll be praying for you and everyone in Florida. My co-worker's mother lives in Melbourne. Try to let us know info as you are able. Thanks for all your great info!!!

I'm getting this funny picture of Cinderella handing the castle to Prince charming and saying "could you open this for me?":jester:

I have always been told this was an urban legend. I could not find anything on Snopes though.

funny....i thought the travel channel show said it COULD be removed.......i tape all those shows. over holiday weekend, i'm gonna go thru tape and find it and see what it said. now i'm really curious!! ::yes::

...this really has me wondering if my book was wrong  We're doing the Keys to the Kingdom tour next month, so I'll ask and maybe the CM guiding the tour will know for sure...we at least know from LibertyBelle that they didn't take any part off during the last hurricane...interesting either way

Well everyone...........I finally sat down today to watch Walt Disney World: Behind the Scenes (travel channel). I saw, heard, rewound and heard again......NO PARTS OF THE CASTLE ARE REMOVABLE IN CASE OF HURRICANE. They did mention the spires and how they were built to be hurricane proof....so, there we have it. The spires do NOT come off in cases of hurricanes........ Thought you'd all like to know!! Have a Disney Day!!

hmmm... that is interesting... the book says yes, the tv show says no and the cm that dh asked when we were "locked down" for hurricane frances said "yes" but they were not removing it because the winds were not expected to get fierce enough but the only time they did remove it for hurricane floyd in '99... so, the more sources you check, the more answers you get!

Not sure about the castle, however the ears on earful tower were removed for hurricane Charley.

We just took the tour. And chances are your guide will tell you without having to ask. Ours did.

Geoff.

He was great! He knew tons, and answered all of our questions before we could ask them! :)

According to him, those spires are not removable.
