Castaway Cay 5K Query

My husband is concerned about this cutting into Castaway time, one thing we are very much on the same page about is that we like to be on the island absolutely as long as possible. So I will be bringing my swimsuit and flipflops off the ship with me - and then whether he leaves a little bit after, or registers as a walker and waits for me, we will head straight to the snorkelling immediately afterwards :)

Just remember it's super hot and the sweat makes it very awkward to change from running clothes to swimsuit. Some will just go into the water wearing running clothes to rinse off. I prefer to rinse off in a shower. They have outside clothes-on showers at the restrooms.

Sadly, I'm still unable to run for more than a minute at a time

Nothing sad about that. Run-walk is awesome, and helps many of us.

Also, week 5 of all c25k programs is brutal. If you're not up to the challenge by then, do not be afraid to repeat week 4 as many times as you need.

Exactly what we did!

We are cruising on Fantasy in February and I have been 'training' for the Castaway Cay 5K for the past two months, using the "Couch to 5K" app on my phone (was running this morning in fact) so when we arrive it will be my FIRST 5K at the age of 63. I did run some, maybe 20 years ago, when we lived in Michigan and I did run a 5 and 10K, but after the 10K never ran another step until now. I like to have a 'fitness' goal as I get older, to train to and complete. Last season I performed the same fitness test that our Wildfire fire fighters here at the Florida Forest Service must pass every year, though I'm not a fire fighter and am not required to participate. That test is to walk two miles in less than 30 minutes, carrying a 25 lb backpack. I completed that test in less than 28 minutes. I'm making good headway on the Couch to 5K program and am currently in week six of the eight week program, but it has taken me eight weeks to get this far (go figure). I'm really looking forward to the 5K on Castaway Cay and the completion medal that comes with it.

I was late to the running game too- late 40's, never could run further than a few yards. I found cross training helped my running. So I stepped up my lap swimming which helped build my endurance, which then helped my running. I eventually ditched the Couch to 5K, ran the pace I needed to to get to the 3.1. Overtime, my pace picked up as my mileage increased. I'll never be the fastest, but I do all right. Run the pace you feel comfortable with, that gets you to your goal. Sounds like your overall fitness is fantastic. Good luck on your race on the island!

Thanks, ladyofthetramp
I was very 'aware' that it is not a 'real' race, but I am still pretty stoked and it has given me something to focus on - definitely a goal to work towards. Three months ago I could not run more than 30 seconds, and this morning I ran 20 minutes steady for the first time in my life! Amazing how much of a motivator Disney swag is for me :earboy2:
I doubt I will ever convince my husband to come with me for a 'real' runDisney race, so this is the closest I am going to get princess:

Check out the WISH boards on here. PLENTY of people go solo for the runDisney events. Sometimes meeting up with or staying with people they meet on the boards who are also going solo.

It is a fun race, fairly close to 3.1! My watch clocked it at 2.75 miles and the free "bling" is worth it. We had a large group last December, and 12 of us did the 5k, half of us ran, half walked it. No pressure to walk fast either, just fun. Enjoy!

Tom - we are on the same track on the Couch-to-5k - I start week 6 on Thursday, I just did my last week 5 run this morning :D
Although, week 5 snuck up on me - it had me run 8 minute intervals and then right into a steady 20 minute run this morning! But I did it!! I am so excited that I ran 20 minutes straight :)

I was worried about that 20 minute run myself! Got up Sunday morning at 6:30 and knocked it out without too much fuss. You are always stronger than you think you are, in my opinion. Today was intervals again, but with shorter walks in-between, it was as hard as the long run on Sunday, but I hadn't had much sleep... I'm only about one day ahead of you, as I'll be doing week 6 day two on Thursday, but no run on Saturday, as we're going to Sea World with the Grandkids and will be walking a bunch. By next week we should be in sync!

Just wanted to say that I think it is super-inspiring that you guys are setting a goal and sticking it out. So what if the 8 week program takes you 10 weeks to complete or something. It is just great to see you setting a goal and making it happen!

All the best!

An 8 week program taking 10 weeks? How about this is my third shot at it in the last two years, except third time is a charm because this time I am going to make it :D :earsgirl:

Repeat repeat repeat! My lungs were my weakest point for c25k, and they were just NOT ready to do the longer ones, not even with my intervals. So I repeated week 4 over and over.

then after I had done the plan using time, I repeated it using the mileage; you know they are like 20 minutes or 2 miles...that sort of thing? I did it both ways. And I had to repeat week 4 again and again...again.

Hey, finish or not, you are running more than I am! And the effort has such benefits even before you succeed. Plus, when you do, it will be even sweeter, like a sports team that finally wins a Championship.

I ran this in May, 2016 while on our Fantasy Cruise. I specifically asked the CM in charge if it the distance actually was 5K and she said she had measured it and it was actually 5K.

She is the only person who I have ever heard of measuring the fun run at exactly 5K.

It technically doesn’t matter as the time could not be used as proof of anything for an actual race. It’s about doing it.

And in that heat, even 1K feels like 5. :D

She was a runner herself and, as you know, many runners are quite obsessive about things like that.

Well, I was at the time I did it and it was not close by my Garmin or that of any other even more serious runner I know.

Now, if she had run the Challenge 5K course, then yes. THAT is 5K certified. But the fun run? Only if you do a lot of weaving to make up almost 1/2 a K.

I just did the 5K last Friday. My fitbit was very confused by the double back course, and recorded only 1.74 miles from the start to the Serenity Beach turnaround. (it didn't record the trip back!)

Took me one hour, one minute. It was just too darned humid to run! That'll teach me not to train inside in the air conditioned gym!

So I convinced to DH to run with me. Is there time for us to put a bag down on a couple of chairs before the race?

I was going to bring my bathing suit and flip flops and change after the race, while he goes back to change and get the kids from the kids club. It would be nice to also have a couple chairs saved during that time.

Not chairs. There is a “chest” you can drop bags in.
