Sorry I wasn't trying to direct my comment at you. I was just stating that because something is USED doesn't mean it doesn't have value. I was more focused on the comment from Skipper that stated that since the device was used it was $100 or LESS.

In fact I regularly sell my used phones when I am eligible for an upgrade. Since I own smart phones (Android and Blackberry) they usually fetch around $200 USED and that is a 2 year old phone. It actually pays for me to upgrade to my newer model because I buy them subsidized by the phone company. So even though the iPhones sell for $200 new subsidized doesn't mean the stolen value is $200 it is actually much more.

I think you best go on ebay and take a look..I just did..NEW Iphones..$233.00..up.

So I stand by my used.$100.00, maybe less.......

The point I was trying to make was even at $200.00 your figuire......I am amazed at all the noise......

Of course as I said before,its still stealing at any price!

I disagree on your price assessment. The new prices you are looking at are for phones with a contract. Without contract the prices go up WAY up.

For example here is a stolen iPhone 4S with bids USED and it is close to $400 and that is STOLEN. You'll see it says "Bad ESN" which means it has been reported stolen and can not be registered on the network it was purchased on.

Both are the low end models.

The reason why the ones are cheaper new with contract is the phone company (Verizon, Sprint, AT&T) are paying part of the cost of the phone for you given you'll be paying them for a phone + data contract for 2 years. Without that agreement you have to pay the full price of the phone which I included examples of above. If the person who had the phone stolen was still in their contract they would still have to pay the remainder of their 2 year contract and pay for a phone like the few I listed above because they couldn't get a new contract.

Yep I agree to disagree.

To satisfy your curiosity is because people jailbrake these phones which means hack them and when you hack them you can register them on another network. So that is why there is value on the stolen phones. I personally wouldn't buy a stolen phone. I have helped many people buy iPhones used and new so the ones you are mentioned are either several generations old or require a contract which wouldn't help someone who was still in their 24 month contract.

My HTC was stolen on the Disney Wonder over New Years Eve 2010-2011. I searched the room, the room steward searched, and it was no where to be found. They did a lock read on the room, and they said maintenance was the only person in the room other than us. The security told us that maintenance has "sticky fingers". My phone never turned up, and DCL said there was nothing that they could do for me. So maybe this is widespread on the wonder.

iPhones may start at $233 on Ebay but do we know which one the woman had? There are about a dozen models out there right now. If she had a iPhone 4S 64gb it would be about $700. An iPhone 3 8gb would be more in line with the $200 price range.

Maybe I am just paranoid, but I always lock up my electronics every time I leave my stateroom or hotel room. Everything fits in the safe. Why give someone opportunity? I also usually go technology free except for the cameras during the cruise. Who wants to be bothered by a phone? Not me. Besides our phone is out of range at sea.

The world phones (GSM) operate on AT&T here in the US. They dont blacklist any of the IMEI (phones ID) on phones. Verison and Sprint do have a blacklist though and it makes it a bit more difficult to use a blacklisted IMEI.

Smartphones are more than just phones...they're calendars with appointments, address books, photo albums, etc. To some people, their entire life is on that phone and to lose it or to have it stolen is not just about the monetary value of the phone or its replacement.

Besides, having something stolen from you is a crap feeling. In some ways, it's worse than losing it. When you lose something, you really have nobody else to blame but yourself but for somebody to steal it from you, you know that somewhere, out there, is somebody who conciously took something that did not belong to them.

I don't expect DCL employees to drink the "kool aid". I don't expect Carnival employees to drink their version of "kool aid". However, I do expect that certain moral standards be upheld by employees of any company, by fellow passengers and well, just about everybody. That's not going to happen ... DCL or not... but that's what we deserve.

This story is garnering attention because of the photos ended up in the iCloud stream and the captions are funny. I doubt people are sharing it because they want to find the culprit ... they're posting and sharing about it because they think it's a funny story about a dim witted thief who doesn't know how to reset an iPhone so he doesn't get caught. Somebody earlier mentioned "Darwin award". THAT'S why this has so much press. Not because it's DCL.

Not all jailbroke iphones are stolen. I have an old 3GS phone that I'm going to jailbreak soon. It's not stolen, it's just old and has been replaced. Besides, Ebay doesn't do anything unless somebody complains.

And Jail-breaking your phone does NOT allow it to work on other networks. You must also Unlock it. If you have updated or purchased your iPhone after Aug 2010, there's a good chance it cannot be unlocked (unless you contact AT&T and ask for it to be unlocked and prove ownership.

Jailbreaking is NOT illegal, and it is dangerous. It does allow you to customize your iPhone in ways that Apple wants to charge you $$$ for for free (wallpaper, ringtones, text tones) as well as add functionality to the Iphone that is missing from the official iOS. (such as wireless synch which JUST got added recently).

Yes, I know it has to be unlocked but the first step is jailbreaking it. And I purchased my phone before August 2010. And it's not an AT&T phone. I'm not sure why you say it's dangerous. It's a phone that's sitting in my cupboard after I replaced it with another contract phone (from the same company).

Iphones are also used as music libraries that can be used in the stateroom in their docking station. My 13 year old will definitely have her's plugged in daily while we dance around the room. But I am with you, it will be locked in the safe when we are out and about.

Well if he isn't the criminal, he has bought stolen goods from one or he does seem to like to have his photo, and his girlfriends taken by one..... (hence he knows who to point the finger at)

Yeah but getting your photo taken by stolen iphone is not a criminal offence. I don't go asking my friends if the camera they're using to take my photo is stolen, do you? If Nelson is just the hapless friend who's getting his photo taken a lot by the thief, Nelson's also the guy who's name just got run through the mud. Ultimately, if Nelson isn't the guy who stole the phone, he should go after Ms. Facebook for falsely accusing him of stealing the phone for the sake of grandstanding on Facebook. Let's face it, she could have reported this to DCL or the cops instead of plastering the photos on Facebook. If she wanted to put them up after DCL or the cops intervened so she knew exactly who took it, she could have but instead, she's gone and named somebody who may or may not be the guy.

I'm not saying a CM didn't steal the phone. I just wonder if the right one got accused.
