Cast Member gossip and news!!!

Thanks for the gossip, it's always fun to read. :) I remember the Skyway, I have always hated rides like that. lol It did go through the Matterhorn, I did think that was cool.

I've been reading this thread since its start and I just wanted to put in my two cents. The main prospective projects I'm concerned about are the WOC viewing area and the possible closure of Tomorrowland. The WOC viewing area needs to be improved. I went to see the show for the first time with DBF on our January trip. We had FPs for the blue section and came 90 minutes before showtime. We picked a spot on some steps right behind the railing because we thought that adding some height would help me see better (I'm 5'4"). A CM even told us that we would be able to see everything. To make a long story short, not only was our view obstructed by a large pole, but I damaged my knee because of the way I was standing on the steps for 2 hours. It was impossible to turn or move because of all of the people surrounding us, and they all arrived after us very quickly. I'm still in recovery from partially torn ligaments that support my knee cap. Granted, the viewing problem was probably mostly our fault. We walked over to the viewing area before hand to scope it out as suggested by HydroGuy, but I guess we forgot how far the fountains stretched by the time we arrived to wait for the show to begin. Besides, the CM assured us that we would be able to see everything since we were on steps. I also want to point out that I’m in my mid-twenties and had no previous problems with my knee, so I had no idea that I had to watch the way I stood. Furthermore, I’m used to standing for long periods of time because of my work. I will not be seeing WOC again unless they make significant changes to the viewing area.

I agree that the congestion at Tomorrowland needs to be fixed, but I really hope they don't feel the need to close all of Tomorrowland to make improvements. Space Mountain is my favorite ride at DLR and I can see a closure of Tomorrowland taking months. I'm only able to go to DLR once every 2 to 3 years, so I would be devastated if Space Mountain was closed because they were trying to make Tomorrowland easier to walk through. I really hope they only do this as a last resort as stated earlier in the thread.

As for Innoventions, I too think they need to replace it with something better. I went there for the first time in January also and I had to wait in line to do anything fun (as mentioned by the OP in a later post) and found most of the non-gaming things boring. I haven’t seen captain EO and I have no intention of ever seeing it, so I don’t really care if they do anything to that or not.

I don’t know when the PM was removed so I don’t know if I was ever able to ride it, but if I did I was too young to remember. However, based on the positive things I have heard about it, I wouldn’t mind if they found a way to bring this back to DL.

Frijole, DizNeeLuver, bakerudall, pixiewings thanks for understanding about the gossip part, I don't understand why some people can't understand that (I'm a she by the way), I stated it was gossip and I never said the CM's were right or wrong and sometimes I'll play devil's advocate. I understand they can be wrong but they can also be right, and word GOSSIP in the thread title. Plus the things that I state should or shouldn't happen are my personal opinion and not something the CM said which should be obvious.

Anyways....

Frijole - I don't think the should remove autotopia, I don't know if autotopia is a Disneyland original from 1955 or not. However Autotopia doesn't really fit in with the tomorrowland theme?? So maybe relocate it? But I'm not sure how that would work. maybe make the cars more futuristic looking or amek them electrical as HalloweenQueen stated?

Skiingfast -
With the mountains the CM said it was the top of the Matterhorn done in wood and mentioned somehing about the top of it being sawed off. When was exihbit B photo taken? Is that when they made Finding Nemo? As I stated they fixed the problem before starting on Finding Nemo. He mentioned something about the steel on the bottom with the wood on the top and the pressure and went into something i didn't understand.
If you want to get it straight from the horses mouth the CM that told me about the Matterhorn sin't a friend of mine it was someone I met. His name is Matthew and he handles the Fantasmic reserved seating thing. When you wait in line to sign up for which seat you want he is there and when you are seated and getting taken care of he is there. Fantasmic seating is the only thing he does so, his name is Matthew, Caucasian early 20's, 5'8" medium build, glasses, dark hair short that has gel in it with little spikes, talks with an ever so slight lisp and uses lots of hand gestures when talking. Go ahead and talk to him and tell him he's a liar and maybe he can explain it better than I did.

HalloweenQueen - I believe WDW is doing something with Avatar like an Avatar attraction or land or something (source in case anyone want to challenge it is www.screamscape.com) so amybe putting it into tomorrowland in the theater would be a good idea! I agree they need to relocate the rockets and maybe put them on top of the old people mover where they used to be (They did used to be there right?)
I do see what Hydroguy is saying aboutt he stadium seating I believe I put it in my original post or my later post when talking with the CM's that if they were to do stadium seating it has to be configured where it is collapsible and able to roll in and out or heck maybe even able to go underground or something. Like they hit a bottom and it comes out from under the ground and then it goes back in the ground and collpases after the show? But they do want to keep the Lagoon view unobstructed during the day and as I said if it was there during the day little kids would play on it and fall and stuff like that.
Oh here I found it in my earlier post:
"Some people mentioned stadium seating but the problem with that is that it needs to have a system where it sets up and folds down in other words there can't be a giant stadium seating thing there in the middle of the day because they still want it to be a park like atmosphere there and you will also have the kids that will climb on it and might fall ya know. So stadium seating isn't a 100% go yet for those reasons."

aan1701 - I see what you are saying about Buzzlightyear as I made that same argument to the CM (as I did about FInding Nemo which is Pixar as well), I was told that while the "character" Buzz lightyear is inspired by Toy Story the actual ride is based on the Buzz Lightyear cartoon, as in their is just Buzz, Zurge, and the aliens no Jesse or Woddy etc on the ride. I too made the argument about Finding Nemo as well and was told it wasn't originally supposed to be Finding Nemo it was supposed to be Journey to Atlantis but then it didn't do too well oat the box office so they were "stuck" with finding nemo. I don't think they stuck as they could have done the little mermaid there instead of DCA. I think the whole Pixar thing being in DCA is stupid and greatly limits the parks. I think having Wall-E or Phineas and Ferb going into the 3d theater would be perfect (edpecially Phineas asd Ferb) but was told no.
I also like your idea of turning in the 3d theater into a sit down restaurant amybe one with a live show??

Hydroguy - I agree with what you are saying about the stadium seating but think about it that it collapses down then electronically goes down underneath the ground after the show, and brought back up for the next sdays show or something, it's totlly do-able!

HalloweenQueen - For me the screen isn't too small but it is really blurry for some reason to me, Fantasmic isn't like that.
No one answered me earlier about the white half dome like things that would rise up out of the water and show things on it I think during the little mermaid scenes but I didn't see it this last time, does anyone know what I am talking about?

DizNeeLuver - I too asked why we can't just sit on the ground because it makes a lot more sense when you have a ton of epople trying to view one area, I mean it works for Fantasmic. With the fireworks I can understand because you are essentially looking up but not for this. I was told the same response as skiingfast gave that more people fit in if they are standing. To me it just causes more problems. The premiere dining packages don't seem so "premiere" or special anymore. I won't be doing them again. I also don't see that if CM's can ask everyone to sit down for Fantasmic that they can't ask someone to take their daughter down from their shoulders, right?

SilentFeline - I don't see them closing all of Tomorrowland to do this project, they usually like to keep as many attractions open as possible, I mean look how much stuff they kept open when working on DCA. When re-theming Paradie Pier they could have shut down all the rides at once and did but no they did them one at a time. I think it was just one of those things that was "thrown out there" Plus Space Mountain isn't near the area where congestion is a problem. The congestion area problem is by the rockets. i still don't see why the hell they put them there, it causes traffic problems, the view and scenery was much better when they were on top of the old people mover and what is up there now some mobile that spins around and plays music every hour????dumb....
I too hope they bring back the people mover but personally I don't think they will, they usually don't bring back attractions (I'm sure someone on here can name one where they did but it usually isn't in there usual practice to), plus it wouls take a lot of work re-doing the tracks. They might do something similiar to it but...I don't know. I believe the people mover closed in the 1990's when they did the first refurb of Tomorrowland, they put in the rocket rods after that (I never got to ride them). I was told that the problem with the rocket rods is they were meant to go fast but the curves in the tracks weren't banks (as it would take too much money to tear the pillars and rebuild them as a banked turn structure) so it would go really fast then slow around the corner then really fast then slow around the corner. I was also todl that they broke down a lot and the cost to repair outweighed the cost to operate them. The CM said "The Imagineers got a little too imaginative" I was also todl there were multiple problems and complaints with the cue line that you spent 5 times the amount of time in line then on the actual ride and people didn't like it. PLease note: The CM that told me the following about Rocket rods was not a CM friend of mine it was a CM working Autotopia that we were talking to while waiting in line WAY back in 2001 while on my honeymoon. I went back to DL in 2001 for my honeymoon after like a 6 six year break.

Thanks for your input and the links! :thumbsup2 Also, thanks for making this thread. I think it's fun to speculate and discuss the future of DLR. Even if none of this stuff happens it's fun to discuss and dream of what could be. :)

Here is a great link about the Matterhorns first major rehab and what it entails. All facts and told by someone who has actual knowlege of the project.

Here is another one. Notice the height, it's still the same height.

Here is an interesting peice of Matterhorn trivia.
What's at the top of the Mattherorn in DL? A hole. If you have ever seen the climbers on the Matterhorn that is how they get down. You can verify this by looking at arial photos.

Avatar coming to Disney Parks, it sure is. At the Animal Kingdom in WDW.

And again TL will not be getting a major overhaul. My source is Bob Iger, you can look up the recording of the annual shareholder meeting for Disney and hear it too.

nice photos and links :thumbsup2

I see your source but I still have tons of CM's (ones I know and ones I don't ) telling me that TL is getting a refurb.
If they are wrong they are wrong, but I was merely reporting what I was told to, only time will tell I guess.

Yah I was right about Avatar comnig to Disney, at least in FLorida, so my opinion (sharing it with another posters idea) about bringing Avatar to the 3d theater in TL isn't too far off.

I actually liked Rocket Rods....but..super long wait for a kinda short and not to thrilling ride. Really thought the power up/down sounds it made added zing to the land. But yea it broke down and holy cow..the lines..I still would prefer Rocket Rods over NOTHING there

I first visited Disneyland in 1960 or 61 so I was intrigued when I read the memory of the poster who felt that the Matterhorn interior was wooden based on a trip through it. I also clearly recalled a wooden structure of some kind inside (I was 11 years old). I was surprised that I had this possibly false memory (that was so vivid!), so I

Did my own research and found this link http://www.yesterland.com/insidematterhorn.html

which shows some shots of the skyway ride going into the Matterhorn - and shows wooden structures on the side - exactly as I recalled. I note that the text explains these are ladders and railings, probably for maintenance, etc. But the picture demonstrates how I, as a young person could easily recall the interior being "wooden" - of course it was steel. But at least my memory was not faulty, just my understanding of engineering! LOL

:hippie:

Peri yeah that was me that remembered the wood as well. I thought it was more like wood cross bars or something but that could be right too. I just remembered thinking it was weird to see it so ornate on the outside and then going inside and it seeming like just a bunch of wood beams but thanks for finding that. I agree I am sure the structure itself was made of steel but the "interior" had wooden pieces. Thanks for finding that I knew I wasn't dreaming. ;)

Minuet-- thanks for starting this thread. All the discussions are interesting and it's fun to think back about the old rides. I don't know why certain ppl were giving you grief over gossip. Gossip is gossip. It's more fun to read than posts about candy cane inn and a 5 year olds souvenir budget.

Your comment about tracking down Matthew with the lisp and calling him a liar was hilarious. :lmao:

Let us know when you hear more CM gossip. I had a friend a million years ago who danced in the parades. It was always fun to listen to his gossip. Best gossip we ever got from him was how to get in for free. This was in the nineties.... When I used to be able to park where the esplanade is now

:thumbsup2:rotfl2:

Yes, please keep posting your gossip, I do enjoy it, fact or not, it's fun to read and speculate. :)

I agree, the thread is a lot of fun and leads to some good discussion. A fine example how the Disneyland boards are the friendlier side of the DIS. :thumbsup2

I think we all need to take what we hear about the parks with a grain of salt. It's like the saying at WDW...don't believe the bus drivers!

We were on the Lillybelle last year and had a wonderful CM join us. Many of her little trivia and fact statements were nothing more than urban legend. Example, how Disney had to built a basketball court inside the Matterhorn to get it to the desired height.

See, so I (or the CM) wasn't too far off. The base seems to be of steel and the top of wood and as I said the CM did say something about a crane and sawing the top off the Matterhorn. I'm willing to conceed that both skiingfast and the CM/me are both correct.

Actually they do have a basketball court inside the Matterhorn. As to "why" it was built I believe it was just for some freetime for the people working on it. It isn't any sort of official height or not even a half court, it's pretty small from what I remember from the pics.

Thanks everyone for the support and I am just glad that people are enjoying the thread.

Here's the pic of the basketball court inside the Matterhorn

in case that doesn't work (I have a hard time putting pics in here)

We visited DL in February, and it was my first trip into Innoventions there. It was "interesting" with the house of the future concept stuff, but not a real attraction to me. It seemed more of a product showcase for some really high-end merchandisers.

But, it did turn slloooowwwllllyyy. Only one suitable option came to mind (if they couldn't revive an updated wheel of progress), and that is a nice character interface restaurant, like this one:
http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/dining/garden-grill/

Captain EO? Uhhh, I'm 50 and have absolutely NO interest in MJ. Why not use that space for the Tron 3D snippet, but please, turn the volume down.

The Astro Orbiters really should be put back up on the tower where they used to be when I was younger. They seem to be a great impediment to traffic where they are currently at - and the queue doesn't seem to move any faster.

As for the old People Mover / Rocket Rods tracks. I wuold love to see something similar to the WDW TTA return, but if not - how about using the tracks for mobile displays, projections? Anything that would cause folks to stop and look up for a few minutes. Sort of like that whirlagig thingy they have where the Astor Orbiters were.

I too enjoy the thread.I've been lurking since page 2!! But that said I also love the historical fact threads too. That separate the facts from rumors. I get the wanting to know the truth about things. But there isn't anything wrong with some speculation either. :goodvibes
I loved the pics of the basketball court! I was in awe when someone said the esplanade used to be a parking lot in the 90's:eek: I had no idea! I didn't get to do grad nite. I had a HORRIBLE flu and missed what would have been my first time to DL ever!
I would LOVE to see updates to the park! I went to Innovations and it was very interesting but not a return over and over again type of attraction. I think they could really do more there!
I'm too young for the people mover but LOVE the idea! What else used to be in the DL park that isn't there anymore? I love knowing what used to be!:lovestruc Great thread! Love all of the different ideas and views being talked about! It is much more interesting then my girls souvenir budget!!!

Yes, I know they had a basketball court in the Matterhorn. I was just commenting that the CM's reason was wrong. :thumbsup2

Go to www.yesterland.com to see all the different things in DL past

Yes, I know they had a basketball court in the Matterhorn. I was just commenting that the CM's reason was wrong. :thumbsup2

oh sorry my bad
well maybe someone else learned something LOL

I think they should replace autopia or at least the cars. I have fond memories of that ride as a kid but it's pretty annoying as a parent driving it for your kid....
As an adult, I can't stand Autopia and never ride it. However, kids LOVE Autopia. They get to drive a car! :woohoo: Something they cannot do in the real world. And it's that part of what Disney is all about? :wizard:

It was my understanding with Autotopia that the higher ups want to try shortening the track as opposed to getting rid of the ride....
Yep, AND... Autopia brings in money. It has a corporate sponsorship (Chevron?). Execs aren't going to axe something that someone else is paying for unless there's a really good reason not to, and with the crowds that Autopia pulls, it's clearly a crowd favorite.

There are usually a fair amount of people inside Innoventions and only 3 video game consoles each with a different game, so if I want to play a specific game I have to wait in line yet again see what I mean....

...I don't have one and don't want one so I can't relate to a majority of the exhibits there.
I am not sure when you were in there last, but they re-did a lot of the upstairs and there are countless xbox game consoles (10? 15?).

And I guess I'm the exact opposite when it comes to xbox. I don't have one. We aren't getting one, so I LOVE being able to play with one at Disneyland, especially the Disneyland Adventures games. F-U-N! But that's the beauty of Disney --- something for everyone. :goodvibes

Asimo is an ok production...but they need more of those not just one production PLUS once you have seen the Asimo production that's it done, nothing new.
But again, it's a corporate sponsorship thing. I am not exactly sure what you mean by "not just one production," but I think you mean show variety. Generally when you have shows like this, the presenter (Honda) has a specific show concept that they want and that's what happens. Hopefully, it is embraced by the target audience. FWIW, we LOVE the ASIMO show. It's a pretty amazing robot and rather impressive to really watch. Again, though, if you don't care for it, you just don't care for it. It's not for everyone.

...when I was there the last few times they weren't doing the home floor show why not? That gets me interacted with Innoventions and the majority of the bottom floor. PLus, how long has this dream home thing been in Innoventions? I think it is time to move on...
Since I have not seen anyone else answer your questions, I will try to do so. When we were there last they had all of the "shows" inside the home going on. The Peter Pan storytelling (LOVE it!), the kitchen, someone showing things in the girl's room, someone in the room with the cool touch top dining room table and then there's that really big room with the huge tv in it. I'm not sure if that's what you mean by the "floor show," but that's what we saw last time we were in there. And the Home has been there around for years(gotta love Google :goodvibes ).

...I argued the same thing about Finding Nemo and Buzz lightyear being in tomorrowland but I was told that buzz lightyear ride is based on the cartoon Buzz lgihtyear space rangers not toystory pixar movie....
Okay, please know I am not arguing with YOU, I am just stating the the CM you spoke with was mistaken. Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters was based on the movie. However, there is a place in which there is a "nod" to the cartoon. A character that is very similar to Mira Nova from Buzz Lightyear of Star Command (the television show) is on one of the queue walls. Maybe the CM you spoke with s a victim of the telephone game and the cameo has gotten twisted to "it's based on." :confused3

...I bet the People Mover, Autopia, Innoventions, and even Space Mountain will get an overhaul before replacing Captain EO. EO is like the Tiki room; if you took that away there would be riots...
Well, they DID say when they brought it back that it was a "temporary" tribute. But, who knows.... :confused3

Don't worry, that's why I quit making posts on this site....
Nice to "see" you again. I hope you are doing well --- and still loving Disney. :goodvibes

... With the mountains the CM said it was the top of the Matterhorn done in wood and mentioned somehing about the top of it being sawed off....He mentioned something about the steel on the bottom with the wood on the top and the pressure and went into something i didn't understand.
I am just pondering here.... Could the CM have said (or meant) it was steel on the bottom and wood on top, meaning steel underneath and wood over it? That seems like it could be a VERY simple technicality of wording. Or maybe the CM heard it wrong from someone else....

...No one answered me earlier about the white half dome like things that would rise up out of the water and show things on it I think during the little mermaid scenes but I didn't see it this last time, does anyone know what I am talking about?
Are you talking about these little white "movie balls," as I call them?

If so... I have not seen WoC in about 6 months, so maybe they are not used currently, but each time I have seen it, they were there. Maybe it was a technical glitch that night? :confused3

I too asked why we can't just sit on the ground because it makes a lot more sense when you have a ton of epople trying to view one area, I mean it works for Fantasmic....
Just some perspective... with Fantasmic! the only area in front that is sitting is the center section. If you are on the sides, it is standing. And if you try to sit in the upper areas, they will tell you that you need to stand. Now, why they did not build a sitting area in the front for WoC in a similar way... I have no idea. :confused3

...I was told that the problem with the rocket rods is...
Oy... what WASN'T a problem with Rocket Rods? :rotfl: :lmao: :rotfl: Mere mention of them any Cast Member that worked them and they just seem to turn ill at the mention of them.

Hey, by the way, did all of you hear about the third Park that... ah, nevermind..... :upsidedow

We did not see those cool orbs the two evenings we attended in late February. Those look interesting.

We did the Peter Pan Story room, quite amusing. Oh, and I got to help read.

I thought that someone would dislike the suggestion of turning the rotating platform into a themed Character restaurant. Hmmm, maybe the idea has legs?

I liked the idea and those are the orbs I was talking about and they weren't there when we went last week.
Wondering what is going on with those?
