Cash or Points - What would you do?

I agree with lizziepooh. I have 250 points and am not in a financial position to buy more. When my mom was alive, we used to do 6 or 7 nights at OKW in May in a 1 bedroom. Weekend nights were 48 points. I could pay cash for around $320 for the Friday and/or Saturday nights and stretch my 250 points (we also stayed at BWV in early December for 6 nights, all points) plus we never changed rooms. $320 vs 48 points is under $7 a point, which is close to the initial buy-in plus dues for an add-on. Now that she has passed away, 250 points is more than I need so I'm glad I didn't buy an add-on. Using cash for those 1 or 2 weekend nights allowed me to stretch my points when I needed to without the long term committment.

Has anyone done some kind of cost benefit analysis on:
If every couple years or so they infused their account with a nice amount of transfered/bought points? That should save you money?
Thanks
Chris

I would think it would only save you money over buying the points if you got a good deal on the points, say $8 per point or less. Certainly for a one time larger trip it's a good options but as far as just getting the points cheaper, I don't think it will. What you could do would be to rent reservations for distressed points for trips already planned and free up your points getting more use of them.

This is how I look at it. When I add my maint fees and my original cost per point, I figure my cost per point for this year is less than $7. So $7 x 39 points is $273 which is still less than the cash DVC discount of $299 plus tax. Yes I know I could rent them for $10 then pay cash, but would not go to the trouble to do that for l or 2 nights. So, I would just use my points for the weekend unless I had a plan to use them for another trip. If I needed to save points and pay cash for 2 nights, I would probably just stay at a value or moderate resort for those nights.

could you break down the figure that led you to $7 per point per UY? Thanks:)
