Cash for Clunkers Bill Passes Congress

Hmmm so I could go buy a clunker for $500 and use it to get $4500 for a new car... sweet!

From what I've read the car has to have been titled in your name for at least a year.

I heard a bit about it on the news earlier today. You have to trade in the old car and get a "new vehicle" cannot be used, or a factory lease car, but new. The paperwork and all that gets filled out at the dealership and then the voucher will go straight to the dealership to be applied as a credit toward your purchase. As somebody stated earlier the bill was supposdly created to help those with gas guzzlers save on gas but who can afford a brand new car!! I just bought a not technically brand new but had 5,000 miles on it "dealership lease car" to save on gas since I drive 150 miles roundtrip everyday and that cost me a small fortune

And your new car only needs to get 4 miles per gallon more than your old one. Yup, only 4 MPG!

We bought a new vehicle 2 months ago because we needed one, not because the govt is giving us money to do it.

This country is so screwed up. More so lately.

The Chrysler products we ship to South America get twice as much MPG as they do there. They are capable of producing better cars. Make them do it for the USA too.

I'm so sick and tired of paying for everyone else how has a hand out!!!!!

Will these people still be eligible to deduct up to $1500 sales tax too? That's new this year too. That's the only stupid stimulus thing we qualified for so far, by spending our own money.

I refinanced my mortgage in December to lower my variable rate. In January they passed the law to help those who have high rates.
I bought a new car in April because my 97 buick was drinking gas like I drink margaritas. In June they pass the law to help those with gas guzzlers.
I can't get a break at all!

Next time you make a financial decision, please let me know.

From what I've been able to tell, yes, they will unless they're from one of the states like mine that doesn't have a sales/excise tax on cars.

Is the MPG based on what the manufacturer says or what my calculations say?

This is the first I've heard of this and I drive a 1995 Pontiac that says it gets 23 but it really gets 19.

I want to get a new convertible that would get about 27.

WOW, my trade-in would only be $800 on my current car. Hhhmmm, maybe this is for me?

I assume they will go by what the manufacturer states the MPG is. Also you need to get a car with an improvement of at least 4 MPG in order to qualify for $3500, and 10 MPG for $4500. I think you would still qualify since the new car you want gets 27 MPG and thats a 4 MPG improvement

This has been in the works for awhile; I heard about it over a year ago (or perhaps my state wanted to pass something similar?). I understand the desire to get the gas guzzlers and cars that weren't passing inspection off the road.

Anyways, I had what would qualify as a clunker but decided buying a new car wasn't the right financial decision for us right now. So I donated it and will get a hefty write-off instead. I would have loved that new car smell... maybe in a few years!

i could've really used a new car once DH's layoff is over, but the cars we would buy don't have high enough MPG to qualify-they're about the same as my 94 gmc jimmy.

Auto makers should be forced to produce cars for USA with the same high gas mileage that they are exporting to other countries. It IS possible. They build them already.

We just spent $1200 on a transmission leak repair on our 2001 Windstar, which has 90K miles on it. The problem still isn't fixed and the van is back in the shop We are not putting one more penny into repairing it.

This bill might be beneficial to us.

My *clunker* minivan is paid off and its having some problems which I'm hoping to be able to live with for a few more years. This could benefit us right now but no way am I about to buy a $30000 car and have a car payment again when I'm living car debt free
