Carousel of Progress' Future?

Rumor around Disney right now states that COP will be moved (not REmoved) to make room for an indoor roller coaster style Incredibles ride. Haven't heard anything about a table service restaurant at this time however.

an indoor roller coaster style Incredibles ride

Which is exactly the type of attraction that the Magic Kingdom - particularly in Tomorrowland - doesn't - need. Remember when Disney was still able to create enduring attractions (POTC, Haunted Mansion, Spaceship Earth) which remained true to their themed environments, appealed to the whole family and not just thrill freaks, and didn't just rely primarily on character-based (often Pixar) experiences?

Yeah, an indoor roller coaster based on anything in Tomorrowland wouldn't make sense because Space Mountain is already there. Maybe you confused this rumor with the rumor of the Monsters Inc. coaster for DHS.

I think they should just recreate it- i think it needs some rehab...
Its not really their fault though, because they cant do anything with the current show. They would have to start mostly from scratch because the parts used to make the... what do you call them? Animatronics I think.. yeah well they dont sell them anymore lol, it was made such a long time ago. I dont think they should change it too much, because I just love that "There's a great big beautiful tomorrow!" song, and I hear alot of people singing it around the kingdom. Some people do think the ride is horrible, and I dont see why really. I guess they just didn't grow up with it like I did, or with a disney freak mom like me either.:rotfl:

The Monster's Inc ride never did make sense after laugh floor opened.
No this ride is rumored to be set right at COP and COP was to be moved back closer to It's a Small world :confused3 which doesn't make sense in my opinion - and I agree it's not what Tomorrowland needs at all. But all rides are Character based - The character may be a pirate pirate: , ghost, or Peter pan... but they are characters none the less.

This is a Disney Tradition. Please, why don't they leave as is? I love this ride!
Sure it is a bit cheesy and outdated, but it pure, something that is missing in today's society!

I'm hoping you're right and that my SIL misunderstood. With the dining plan being so popular it does seem that the MK could use another table service restaurant.

Ahhhh! Hate the dining plan!!!:scared: :scared1:
It's getting impossible to make reservations, and they have cut back on the menus because of these dining plans.
Sorry, had to rant!:worried: :crazy2:

Charleyann: THose kinds of rides (which I love) are exactly the ones that Disney is fond of closing. Witness World of Motion and Horizons. Even though Walt is directly connected with COP, that wouldn't stop Disney for a second if they thought closing it and putting in a thrill ride would be more popular.
And sorry to say--it probably WOULD be more popular.
But let's hope COP can stay the course.

It is sad:scared1:

COP is a personal favorite of mine - rode it during 1964-65 new york world's fair, so it has sentimental/nostalgic meaning for me :lovestruc

I certainly hope they keep it. It is a classic, Walt created it, and many long-time Disney park fans just love it because it takes us back. And yes, I know BOTH theme songs and love them both. I think that last scene would be rather easy to update. Modernize the kitchen, add a Wii, and change their clothes. Not so hard, really. Either MK or Epcot would be suitable locations.

:3dglasses

If the Imagineers know what's good for them, they won't do away with this ride. It's sad that in today's society they're more worried about making money and getting the folks in and out. And sometimes that means shooing out old attractions for newer, popular ones.

Still, Carousel of Progress IS the essence of Disney...what it stood for and what it stands for today. It would truly saddeb me to see this beloved attraction go. There are so many attractions out there that haven't changed, such as Dumbo's flying elephants, The Carousel.

Anyways, I think the final scene should be updated and this attraction should be more recognized because this is what Walt Disney lived for.

Perhaps it should not be updated; keep it frozen in time so later generations can see what life was like in the 20th century.

It warms my heart just thinking about riding CoP (hopefully it will be open) on our next trip home in March.

I think you're right, why update it? Its the Carousel of Progress, that doesn't mean they have to progress it even futher to match the present. I think it is more interesting the way it is now, to learn about what it was like back then and what they thought the future would be more like. I love the song and everyhting baout the ride too :) Especially when you randomly hear some kid singing it while walking around the kingdom, just makes me smile.

I hope that the Carousel of Progress dose not get shut down! I havn't rode it, but I have read so much about it and I love the song "There's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow" it's so much fun (I have the Disney Land 50th anniversary soundtrack). One day I want to experience the magic of Carousel of Progress in all its wonderment!!!!:cloud9:

I hope you get to ride it :) Its so cool, and I appreciate it more now than I used to. its amazing that we still get to see Walt's work.

Maybe they should add a pre-show outling the history of the attraction - it could be a real heavy-duty trip into 60's retro-land, showcasing....

...Walt showing off the attraction in 1963 (before it debuted at the '64 Worlds Fair) on his weekly "Wonderful World of Color" TV show:

...its original home in the General Electric "Progressland" Pavillion (I visted this as a child!):

A glimpse of the previously-mentioned "city of the future" model that you went through while exiting the pavillion:

And just to show how advanced the Disney attractions at the Fair were (in addition to COP, other pavillions at the fair showcased the Lincoln animatronic, It's A Small World and the dinosaurs that still inhabit parts of the railroad at Disneyland), they could show what some of the other ones were like - such as these performers in the "Wonderful World of Chemistry" show in the Monsanto pavillion....

I love the nostalgia of all this (Can't say I like the outfits but that was before my time). I think nostalgia plays a big part of the Disney experience. Its why so many families return year after year. We brought my mother, stepfather and mother-in-law to Disney World last March. All three had questioned why we went so many times (we had been there 3 times before). We told them you had to experience it first hand. You may like it or, like us, fall in love with it. But it was not an experience we could explain.

All three of them loved it, including CoP. They were like children there. My mother put tears in my eyes (yes men can get emotional) due to her child like excitement riding on Cinderella's Golden Carousel. She told me her father wouldn't let her ride a carsouel at the fair when she was very little, a memory, I coud tell, that was very sad for her. The joy in her face was one that I will never forget. I am glad my daughters were old enough to also appreicate the moment.
