Carnival ship ...fire out..now adrift

Your point about profit margin is more than a little bit over-simplified, but let's not get into a lengthy discussion of net income, revenue and EBITDA.

You are also leaving out the concept of supply and demand (in relation to price) and the notion of movement along a demand curve vs. a shift in the demand curve. Supply and demand have a HUGE impact on cost and since there is no problem with demand for Carnival cruises, you are way out of line to suggest that they are compromising safety to earn money.

AHH...but the point is that the demand is created by selling cabvins at bagian prices!

It's statements like this that irritate the crap out of Carnival fans on this board. If you want to complain that they have safety issues, go ahead. But to say "you probably have to cut your costs somewhere", implying that they intentionally compromise the safety of their guests in order to pad the bottom line is ridiculous.

Then I pose the question............where do they make up for the loss revenue??..........Do they intensional put there passinger at risk....NO!, but they must be cutting corners somewhere and cutting corner can (not always) create safety issues.

We went on Carnival last year because we wanted to go to Aruba and they were the only one that went there when we wanted to go. We had a great time and no problems but this makes me think twice about sailing on them again. I would have thought after their fire two years ago and the Concordia accident that they would have made some changes to prevent accidents in the future.

Now I am sorry I bought a future cruise certificate. You pay $100 for it and get a $200 credit on a future cruise. The good news is I can get my $100 refunded! I guess what I am really sorry about is I would like to take that cruise again but I will be shopping for a different cruise line.

To each thier opinions.........but my point is more that none of the other major lines have had these problems....its not just about DCL. Its about many fires, incidents and problems with Carnivail line and Carinival Inc. vessls.

I won't take my families safety over a less expensive cruise.

AKK

Of course not. Just asking, how unsafe is Carnival? Were any lives lost or anyone in any danger in the fire last week? Anyone get ill due to the day adrift? Is a fire that disables the engines less safe than deliberately sailing into a hurricane? And, with a fleet of 24 ships, you would expect more total incidents than a line with 4 ships.

It's not a simple discussion, and I'm not sure that safety is easily defined. I'm comfortable sailing DCL, Carnival, and the other major lines. Things happen, it's the choices that lines make that define them.

Just reinforces that it pays to sail on Disney! So glad everyone on board is okay.

Why do people think this couldn't happen on a Disney ship?

Is Disney covered by Pixie Dust? :tink:

Why is this news on a DISNEY Board, anyway? So people can yet again bash another cruise line?

The odds are, that the more ships you have out there, the more likely you are to have some kind of incident happen. Disney has less ships, so that equals less incidents....but they've had them.

Good Day,

The Carnival Spendour had a major fire off the MR., poorly handled per the inverstigation.........towed to San deiago, I think 5 days.

The Costa Allergo. owned by Carnival Inc, had another Major fire.........vessel being scrapped.

The QMII, owned by Canivail and a very similiar electrical system had a Major Fire, but due to the better trained crew the fire was contained.

The Carnival Extacy........aft

Those fires off the top of my head.

I still say it's all about the ODDS. More ships=more possibilities for problems

Use your credit on one of Carnival's newer ships. You won't regret it. We were on the Carnival Magic, and it's AWESOME! Check out the deck plans and look at what all they have to offer that DCL doesn't.

Here's another one.....VOLUME. When you have more options for people to choose from, you don't have to charge top dollar.
And I'm sure the casinos help make up a bit of money, too.

I've seen how many people flock to Bingo on the Disney ships.....you can't tell me that if DCL added casinos, they wouldn't be packed, too. Yes, a lot of people don't think that a casino is in keeping with the "family/Disney" feeling, and a lot of people complain about the cigarette smoke.....but I still can darn near GUARANTEE you that the ships would be making money hand over fist if they added them.
BUT......I can almost darn near guarantee you that Disney WOULD NOT lower their prices, even if they were pulling in a ton more money.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again....DISNEY CHARGES MORE BECAUSE THEY CAN. They have a corner on the market thanks to Mickey Mouse and all that jazz.....something no one else has, and never will. They are a COMPANY who is in the business of making money. They aren't here just so they can make little kids dreams come true....anyone who believes that needs to quit drinking the KoolAid. And as long as they keep getting people who believe that Disney is perfect and are willing to pay the big bucks, they'll always charge more.

Just because something costs more, doesn't mean it's BETTER.

The key to peace is to not put too much stock in what some random poster that you don't know opines on an internet forum. This is especially true when they caveat their post with "The above is purely conjecture and speculation"

I'm sorry if my conjecture and speculation about what may have contributed to that Carnival ship being adrift irritated you. It is my experience as a former maintence officer in the Army that 'lack of maintenance' is the leading cuase of major mechanical failure. And maintenance is an easy target for budget cuts. Airlines walk this fine line every day. Obviously cruiselines has a lot more margin for error.

ITA. Plus I am sure safety is a very small component on the expense spectrum anyways. Don't forget advertising and all those other things that have no bearing on the quality of the product.

Plus I am sure EVERY business wants to keep customers safe... if not for ethics then at least for the shot at repeat customers.

And Tiffany D - we've gotten sick on 100% of our DCL cruises!

I missed this at first. How many DCL cruises? And what is that about anyways????

One thing that we have noticed following the Events at Sea website is that Carnival ships seem to have the most mechanical issues compared to other lines. Since that site a user reported site, a lot of weight can't be put on it, but it is something we have observed over the last couple of years. Is it due to poor maintenance, number of ships, who knows.

We have fully drank the Disney kool aid, but I do find it strange that the Disney ships rarely if ever show up on that site. I find it hard to believe that Disney doesn't run in to minor issues now and then that you would expect to show up there.

Hey there Stacy!

We disgree, to me the volume on Carnival line is due to the price..........and we agree, dcl charges what the market will bare,as does every other line.

I am on the fence on the casinos............you see being from CT we have the Indian casinos about a hour away, so its no biggy........I try to keep in mind to other folks live in parts of the country, where there are no casinos, so it would be a big thing.

Paying the big bucks is becuase people get Disney and the disney package.............history, parks, lovable charaters, ( not just monsters and super heros) and the facts the kids love it and Mom and Dad love it when they are meeting the charaters. As long as Disney remembers that and they keep that product head and shoulders above the others....they can and will charge the price...........look....I am the biggest Walt fan, but he charged what the market would bear and knew that the better product, drew the bigger money! However his reward was the better product!

We agree that just becuase something costs more doesn't always mean it better, but at least until this date.......with Disney, it does!:thumbsup2

From a very personal experience, I have discovered that somehow, Disney is REALLY good at keeping things quiet. Actually, there are TWO experiences on two different Disney cruises that I can think of...my own personal experience. There have been some incidents reported here on the DIS that never made the newspapers, too.

I still say it's all about the ODDS. More ships=more possibilities for problems

But these problem keep hiitng carnival Inc...............add RCL, NCL and dcl and any other major line...about the same number of ships, yet they are not burning ships all over the oceans and breaking down over and over again!

Do you not read these boards? Disney is criticized immensely. Costs too much. Food quality has gone down, etc.... Why does being willing to pay more equal thinking Disney is perfect? This is NOT about Disney vs Carnival. Carnival makes enough mistakes on its own. Non Disney fans feel a certain way about Carnival and even some of their own fans. I go to WDW because they have a superior product, not because it's more expensive. Given your logic, I shouldn't shop at WalMart, but I do.

Haaa.Stacy.......All vessel have to report incidents.....(like anything but very minor fires ei gallet grease fire). Now it may not be given to the mdia, but all USCG reports are made public.

I know the USCG is a part political group...but you don't mess with them.........they can shut your whole fleet deep with a phone call.....
