Last year when we went to Disneyland we took the Karmel shuttle and were very happy with them. We are coming back in March and today when I looked at the Karmel site there is information about new car seat laws in California that came into effect January 1, 2012. It now says that it is the parents responsibility to provide a car seat.

I see that Supershuttle says the same thing- can anyone tell me if the shuttles enforce this or if there is a way to get from SNA to Parkvue Inn without having to bring a car seat with us for our 4 1/2 year old?

If they did not they can get a large fine and be put out of business. If it were my child I sure would not want them to break the law.

Contact the shuttle companies you're considering. Some will have a car seats available at an extra charge for you to use and you can make arrangements prior to your trip.

Do you not need a car seat on the plane? I don't know, I didn't fly when my girls were tiny...heck I don't fly now....LOL

If it's approved by the FAA the child can sit on it on the plane. If not you can check your child/booster seat for free.

The Disneyland Resort Express is a Gray Line bus that will take you from SNA to the Anaheim area hotels. It doesn't have seat belts so cannot accommodate carseats anyway. Hope that helps!

Thank you for your responses, for some
reason I thought shuttles might be exempt.
I would never want them to break the law and
we will be bringing our booster seat with us
now.

Zippy shuttle provides car seats. We will be using them in a couple weeks.

I don't know about Karmel, but SuperShuttle has always said it's the parent's responsibility. I don't think THAT is what changed with the law.

The law simply brought the age/height up to match other states (like my own), requiring that all children who are either under 8 OR under 4'9" be in a carseat/booster. It was not as restrictive/safe before.

But your child, being that young, ALWAYS needed to have a carseat/booster in CA.

Although I bet if the shuttle were pulled over, it's not the shuttle driver that's going to get the fine, but the parent.

We've had the 8 law for a long time in Utah. That's a shuttle issue, not the law. But if your child falls in this category you SHOULD have some sort of seat (which you say you are..just reiterating :) )

I'm glad Cali finally upped the age, that makes me happy :) Anywho..yes, it's def in your best interest or else it falls on your shoulders if you get a ticket (or worse, in a wreck!)

FTR, I would never use a car seat from a shuttle type place. I'll be the first to admit I'm a little...passionate...about carseats, but you never know what a carseat has been through. For this reason I also hate to stow carseats below the plane. If they're approved for flight, I'd take it on and strap them in on the plane too :) You can find more about what's approved for flight on the individual airline's webpage.

This didn't look right to me, so I looked it up. 4'9" is a very tall child. DGD9 is nowhere near that tall, so I was concerned.

The new law states that any child under 8 years of age must be in a child safety seat or booster seat. There's an exception, though. If a child is under 8 but over 4'9", s/he may use a regular seat belt.

Or, in other words, if the child is under 8 AND under 4'9", s/he must be in a child or booster seat. HTH.

It still seems really extreme to me. Obviously I know there must have been studies done to back up the new regulations, but I have a co-worker that is 32 years old and is only 4'11". Guess it's a good thing she grew those two inches...she could be stuck in a booster seat in back! ;)

My grandma was 4'11", and seatbelts did not fit her. My mom was 5'1", and I'm at the grand height of 5'3", and it wasn't until cars started to have seats that raised up, and seatbelts that went up and down in the slots on the side of the car, that we, especially my mom, fit into seatbelts.

And that's what it's all about, fitting into the seatbelt so you aren't catapulted out despite having the belt on, or in my case, not having the seatbelt cut my neck open in a hard crash.

If I were much shorter, I'd make sure I had some way to fit into my belt. In the late '80s, I was in college with a girl with a form of dwarfism, and she definitely had a booster type of seat so she fit into her adorable Cabriolet!

We're saying the same thing. Or I'm trying to say it. I used an OR in there, and was trying to say it's one or the other, but I think it came out wrong because I used "under". My intent was the same thing, though.

DS is under 4'9", but he's 7. So if we use a car in CA until late May, he's in a booster. Which isn't truly a problem, since he's in one at home, but his uncle in San Diego has "fancy" cars and gets all peevish about the carseat marks on his leather seats. We discovered that DS actually fits the seatbelts in the back seat of my sis in law's Mercedes (quite perfectly, actually), as well as in the 3rd row of their old Durango, and they were ALL excited that I didn't have to bring the seat/booster anymore (my brother is quite rational in many ways, but uses our own personal past to "prove" that the seatbelt laws aren't reasonable...just b/c my mom never had an accident while he and I were sneaking off our lapbelts in the Pinto station wagon doesn't mean a thing!). Since DS fit in those specific seats I was cool with it, but since I'm not willing to pay the fine or insist that they pay it, now I'm in the sad position of avoiding a visit to my brother until DS turns 8, or dealing with my brother's annoyance. Blah.

Who cares about them being pulled over....if there is a wreck, you want your child safer! If you don't want to go with a carseat, do Disneyland Express or a limo (might want a carseat too)!

BEst of luck!

Boosters help the seat belt fit the child correctly. If the child is in a seat with a lower shoulder belt (I've seen some middle seats that have a much lower than average shoulder belt height) that fits him properly, then a child is just as safe there without a booster as using a backless booster with a seat belt with a higher shoulder belt (high-back boosters often provide some side-impact protection as well, so they are safer than the booster-less alternative I'm describing). It really is about the belt fit once they are in backless boosters anyway.

That said, I'm a little neurotic about car seats as well. My 7-yr-old is still harnessed in our primary vehicle. I do feel she's safer there than in a backless booster.

Anyway, if you don't want to bring car seats, go with the buses (which have no way to install a car seat anyway).

I wouldn't want my child in a car/van without a carseat, law or no law.

I recommend this: http://www.kmart.com/shc/s/p_10151_10104_024W160078110001P

They also have it in Cars theme. They are different than the usual backless boosters, they allow weights of 30 to 100 pounds, instead of the usual 40 to 100 pounds. I got one for my 3 year old niece (she'll be 4 on our trip in 3 months) just so she has one for the shuttle and for the plane. Now she'll actually be able to see out the window in her window seat! Plus they only weigh 6 pounds so they are easier to get around when traveling.

I thought you weren't allowed to use backless boosters on airplanes... only approved carseats or the CARES harness.

Really? I've never heard that. I don't see why, it's out of the way more than a full on car seat and it's not like she won't still be buckled in. But oh well, she doesn't need it for the plane anyway lol, last year she didn't have one at all and was fine; and she was way smaller

It says as long as it's FAA approved she can use a booster seat with JetBlue.

"Use of booster seats, harness and vest restraints will not be allowed during the movement on surface, takeoff or landing, unless it is an FAA-approved device."

But I do understand why it wouldn't be safe. We'll just be bringing it as a carry on and she'll still have it for the shuttle :)
